If you want Switch 2-exclusive games, the closest alternative is to wait or check legitimate stock: another handheld cannot run those games as a Switch 2. If you want portable gaming more broadly, choose by library and how you play: Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-centered library, ROG Xbox Ally X for Windows PC gaming, Lenovo Legion Go S for a larger screen, Nintendo Switch OLED for supported original Switch games, or PlayStation Portal for streaming from a PS5 over Wi-Fi. None is a universal substitute, and stock or checkout prices can change by seller and location.

What should I buy if Switch 2 is sold out?
Start with the games you intend to play. A device that matches your existing library is usually a more useful substitute than one chosen solely for screen size or headline specifications.

- You want Switch 2-exclusive Nintendo games: Check authorized stock or wait for a Switch 2. Nintendo identifies Mario Kart World as a Switch 2 exclusive, and an older Switch or PC handheld does not become a Switch 2 by being portable. Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page distinguishes exclusives from compatible games from earlier Switch systems.
- You already own games on Steam: Consider the Steam Deck OLED, then check whether the specific games you care about are compatible with it.
- Your PC games and services are Windows-oriented: Consider the ROG Xbox Ally X, making sure the listing is for that exact model rather than another Ally variant.
- You value screen area above compactness: Consider the Legion Go S, but confirm whether the listing is the SteamOS or Windows configuration and which processor it uses.
- You mainly want Nintendo’s earlier library: The Switch OLED may suit you if the games you want are supported on the original Switch. It does not provide Switch 2-exclusive play.
- You want to play PS5 games around the home: Consider PlayStation Portal only if its network-dependent use fits your setup. It is not a standalone console for offline play.
Is Steam Deck OLED a Switch 2 alternative?
It is an alternative for portable gaming if your priority is a Steam library, not a way to play Switch 2 exclusives. Valve’s cited Steam Deck OLED 512GB specification lists a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90Hz and a 50Wh battery. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications give an estimated battery range of 3–12 hours, dependent on the content; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.

What makes it a good fit
The strongest reason to choose this model is access to your Steam-centered game library in a handheld format. Valve also documents USB-C video output, so the device can connect to an external display; its dock is optional rather than included as standard with the console. If TV or monitor play matters, account for the dock or other setup you plan to use rather than assuming the handheld alone supplies a bundled dock.
What to check first
Compatibility is game-specific. Check each title you expect to play rather than assuming that ownership on Steam guarantees a good handheld experience. The cited specification does not establish a current price, retailer stock, or battery life for a particular game, so confirm the exact 512GB OLED model, seller, warranty, and current checkout total before purchase.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X a better choice for Windows games?
It may be the better fit if you want a Windows handheld and the PC games or services you rely on are suited to Windows. Microsoft lists the ROG Xbox Ally X with Windows 11 Home, a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and a 7-inch 1080p screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR. These specifications belong to the Xbox Ally X specifically, not every device with a similar Ally name.

Microsoft’s current handheld page distinguishes the ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, and Ally X20. The screen specification can be a source of confusion: the 7.4-inch OLED display is associated with the X20, not the 7-inch Ally X. Check the full product name and listed configuration before relying on a feature or buying from a retailer. Microsoft’s ROG Xbox Ally page presents the models separately.

Trade-offs to weigh
Windows is a meaningful distinction from SteamOS, but it does not guarantee that every PC game or launcher will work exactly as you expect on a handheld. Verify the games and services you care about for the exact device. The cited specifications do not establish current US pricing, battery runtime, or comparative performance, so do not treat the processor name or memory capacity as proof of a particular frame rate or playtime.
Is the Lenovo Legion Go S worth choosing for its screen?
Consider it if a larger display matters more to you than having the smallest or lightest handheld. Lenovo’s specifications describe an eight-inch 1920 × 1200 IPS screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and an approximate weight of 730g. That screen is larger and higher-resolution than the cited Steam Deck OLED or ROG Xbox Ally X displays, but display specifications alone do not establish which one will look or perform better in a particular game.
Confirm the configuration, not just the product family
Lenovo documents Legion Go S configurations with Windows and SteamOS, and more than one processor is available. Those differences affect which software environment you are choosing; the name “Legion Go S” by itself is not enough to identify the operating system or processor in a listing. Match the configuration to your games and preferences before checkout.
Think about carrying and setup
At approximately 730g, the listed weight is useful when comparing portability, but it does not tell you how comfortable a particular person will find a long session. If you want to connect a handheld to a TV or monitor, check the exact configuration and accessories in the package. The cited details do not establish an included dock, current price, or battery-life result for every Legion Go S model.

Should I buy a Nintendo Switch OLED instead?
Choose the Switch OLED when your real goal is to play games supported by the original Switch, especially if you already have that library. It is not a substitute for Switch 2-exclusive releases. Nintendo says older Switch games are compatible on Switch 2 only where supported, and its support guidance notes that some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible there. Compatibility therefore needs to be checked title by title in either direction; do not assume every older game works perfectly on the newer console.
The OLED model is a narrower alternative than a PC handheld: its case is strongest when the games you want are part of the original Switch library. If you are buying it specifically because you cannot find a Switch 2, first identify the games you expect to play and confirm that they are available for the original Switch. Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page explains the distinction between Switch 2 exclusives and supported older Switch games.
Can PlayStation Portal work without a PS5?
Not as a conventional standalone console for local offline play. PlayStation Portal can access PS5 games through Remote Play over a network, or eligible PS5 titles through cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium. Those are different routes: Remote Play connects to a PS5, while cloud streaming is limited to eligible games and requires the stated subscription. Sony’s PlayStation Portal page describes the device and its network-dependent features.
Remote Play versus cloud streaming
For Remote Play, Sony says PS Plus is not required merely to use that feature. You do need a PS5 to stream from, so Portal is a poor fit if you do not own one or cannot rely on a connection to it. Cloud streaming is separate: Sony says it requires PS Plus Premium and is available only for eligible PS5 games.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
What the connection minimum does—and does not—mean
Sony lists a minimum 5 Mbps upload and download connection to establish a cloud-streaming session. Meeting that minimum does not promise smooth play on every network; the connection’s actual quality and reliability still matter. If your goal is to take games away from Wi-Fi and play locally, Portal does not meet that need.
What should I check before buying an alternative?
Use this checklist to compare the actual device you can buy with the way you intend to play. Specs and family names are not substitutes for checking the precise SKU and game support.
- Write down the games first. Separate Switch 2 exclusives, older Switch titles, Steam games, Windows PC games, and PS5 games. Confirm the platform and compatibility for each title you care about; no alternative on this list unlocks another system’s exclusive software.
- Decide whether you need local play. A Steam Deck, Ally X, Legion Go S, or Switch OLED is a handheld gaming device, while Portal depends on network streaming for its described PS5 play. If offline use is essential, do not choose Portal on the assumption it runs games locally.
- Compare operating system and exact SKU. Steam Deck OLED uses SteamOS; the cited Ally X is a Windows 11 Home model; Legion Go S is offered with either SteamOS or Windows. Confirm the processor, storage, and operating system in the listing instead of inferring them from a product family name.
- Compare screen and carrying weight together. The cited screens range from seven inches on the Ally X to eight inches on Legion Go S. The Legion’s listed approximate weight is 730g; a larger display can be attractive, but the information here does not establish that it is more comfortable to carry or better for every game.
- Include TV output and accessories in the total. Valve documents USB-C video output and an optional Steam Deck dock; Nintendo includes a dock with Switch 2. Check the bundle and accessory compatibility for the exact product you are buying rather than assuming another handheld includes a dock.
- Check stock, price, seller, and returns at checkout. Availability differs by location and retailer. Verify whether the unit is new or used, which model and storage capacity it is, who is selling it, what warranty applies, and whether the return policy works for you.
- Confirm storage-card compatibility. An ordinary microSD card used with an older Switch is not the specified game-storage option for Switch 2; Nintendo specifies microSD Express for Switch 2. Check the exact console’s requirements before buying a card.
Is Switch 2 actually sold out everywhere?
No reliable evidence here establishes that it is sold out across the United States in October 2026. Nintendo reported supply pressure in many countries in August 2025, but that historical statement is not a current US inventory count. In its investor presentation, Nintendo said, “Currently, demand for Nintendo Switch 2 is exceeding supply in many countries, and we regret the inconvenience this is causing our consumers.” The statement is dated 2025 and should not be read as proof of a 2026 shortage. Nintendo’s August 2025 investor presentation also estimated more than 6 million global consumer sell-through units during the first seven weeks after launch; that is a historical sales estimate, not a live stock figure.

How should I choose between these alternatives?
Use the most restrictive requirement to narrow the choice. If you need a specific exclusive, that requirement decides the system; if not, consider the library you already own, local versus streamed play, and the hardware trade-offs that matter day to day.
- Exclusive Nintendo software is non-negotiable: wait or check legitimate Switch 2 stock.
- Your backlog is on Steam: shortlist Steam Deck OLED and verify each game’s compatibility.
- You want a Windows handheld: compare the exact ROG Xbox Ally X listing with the games and services you use.
- You prioritize a larger display: compare Legion Go S configurations and consider its approximate weight.
- You mainly want older Switch games: check that the titles you want are supported on the original Switch before considering Switch OLED.
- You already have a PS5 and reliable Wi-Fi: Portal may fit a streaming use case, with Remote Play and cloud streaming treated as separate options.
There is no universal winner across these needs. The best substitute is the one that can play the games you actually want, in the places and network conditions where you intend to use it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a regular microSD card to store games on Switch 2?
Nintendo specifies microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage; an ordinary microSD card used with an earlier Switch is not interchangeable for that purpose. Check the card type before buying: Nintendo’s microSD Express support page covers the requirement.
