Which card fits each Nintendo 3DS model?

Nintendo says, “SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible.” Its support pages list 32 GB as the family’s maximum supported capacity. For the documented route, select a card marked SDHC or microSDHC, matching the slot in your model. Nintendo also notes that it cannot guarantee products other than the card included with the system, so its compatibility listing is not a guarantee for every third-party card. Can you use a 64 GB or 128 GB card?
It may be possible, but it is an unofficial workaround. 64 GB and 128 GB cards are generally in the SDXC or microSDXC category, which Nintendo does not list as compatible. 3DS Hacks Guide says cards larger than 32 GB must be manually formatted as FAT32; its instructions specify MBR and recommend a 65,536-byte allocation unit for 128 GB cards. 3DS Hacks Guide: Key Information
The guide recommends capacities from 2 GB through 128 GB for its use case. It says cards of 200 GB or more may work but are not recommended because of potential DS/GBA graphics and custom-theme issues. These are specialist recommendations, not Nintendo specifications or a guarantee that a particular card will work.

Which option should you choose?

If you want to follow Nintendo’s documented compatibility, stay at or below 32 GB. A straightforward purchase description is “32 GB SDHC” for an original 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS, or “32 GB microSDHC” for a New 3DS-family system. Original-model owners who prefer a microSD card need a full-size SD adapter. If choosing a larger SDXC card, be prepared to format it manually as FAT32 and accept the compatibility uncertainty; do not assume that formatting alone makes every card work.

The cited compatibility guidance does not establish a measured speed difference among 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB cards, nor does it show that larger capacity by itself makes a 3DS slower. Choose based on capacity, fit, support status, and willingness to handle the formatting workaround rather than an assumed performance benefit.
