NIH has made a beta version of NIH.gov and new topic hubs available, while its broader website rollout remains staged. The redesign is intended to make health information, research, grants, and other resources easier to find by organizing content around public topics and needs rather than NIH’s internal structure. NIH has not reported measured results showing that the new experience already improves discovery.
What is changing on NIH.gov?
The new web environment brings NIH.gov together with eight thematic hubs: Cancer, Clinical, Data, Grants, Health, Rare Diseases, Research, and Tech. NIH also provides dedicated pages for its Institutes, Centers, and Offices, with information such as leadership, advisory groups, research focus areas, grants, and budgets.
NIH says content is being tagged so that relevant material can appear in multiple places without creating duplicate copies. Its stated goal is a clearer, easier-to-use experience and better content management across the agency. That is a design goal, not a published measurement of search success or user satisfaction.
How should you search for NIH information?
NIH recommends using the site’s search feature and entering a few keywords. The agency says search is intended to direct visitors to relevant material regardless of where it lives. Once the transition is complete, NIH plans one connected search experience spanning NIH.gov and the topic hubs; the agency’s page describes this as an end goal, not a fully completed feature.
#1 Best Overall
The current Web Modernization page says the beta version of NIH.gov and new hubs have launched, but also carries a notice that the wider website launch is moving to fall. NIH does not give a specific day for that overall launch. Check NIH’s Web Modernization page for current status and its FAQ.
Will old NIH links and bookmarks still work?
NIH says existing websites will remain available for a period during the transition. Where possible, visitors will be redirected to a direct match; otherwise, a notice or redirect should point them toward the most relevant content area. Older sites are expected to sunset gradually, after critical and mandated content has been checked and redirects are prepared. NIH has not published final sunset dates for legacy properties.

- Used Book in Good Condition
For a specific earlier redesign, NIH’s Grants & Funding notice said many page and resource URLs would change, but links to individual funding opportunities and notices in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts would remain stable. The NIH Guide search also changed, so users with saved searches were advised to check them. Those details apply to that Grants & Funding redesign, not automatically to every NIH site or URL.
What the earlier Grants & Funding redesign shows
NIH’s Office of Extramural Research announced a separate Grants & Funding website redesign in notice NOT-OD-24-171, issued September 12, 2024, with a launch date of September 24, 2024. NIH described clearer navigation, centralized funding resources, expanded NIH Guide search, guidance on the grants process, and a mobile-friendly design. These examples illustrate changes on that specific property; they should not be read as a feature list for the entire NIH web environment. See the NIH notice about the Grants & Funding redesign.

What is—and is not—known about the results?
NIH describes the modernization as an effort to help people use its web content more easily, but the cited modernization information does not provide a measured usability result, search-performance comparison, or quantified improvement. Visitors can use the beta experience and the available hubs, while the connected search and wider transition remain described as part of the rollout.
