Short answer: Choose Owncast if you want a packaged streaming server with its own viewer-facing website and HLS playback. Choose nginx-rtmp if you want configurable NGINX-based RTMP ingest, relaying, recording, and media outputs. Neither one alone runs a complete, unattended YouTube channel: you still need a continuous content source, a path to YouTube, process supervision, monitoring, and a plan for long sessions. If you want uploaded videos to loop without maintaining a server or computer, StreamNeo is the simpler cloud option.

What is the difference between nginx-rtmp and Owncast?

Question Owncast nginx-rtmp
What is it? A packaged livestreaming server that accepts an RTMP contribution stream and provides viewer-facing playback, including HLS. An RTMP module for NGINX, a web server, with configurable ingest, relay, recording, HLS/DASH output, callbacks, and FFmpeg integration.
Best fit You want an integrated streaming service and its own viewing experience. You want NGINX-level control over media ingest, relay, recording, and outputs.
How does it reach YouTube? The cited Owncast broadcasting documentation describes publishing into Owncast; it does not establish automatic forwarding from Owncast to YouTube. Configure a separate forwarder or encoder for that route. The module documents relay functions, which can be configured to forward a feed. You still need to configure YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the appropriate encoder or relay path.
What must you operate? The Owncast service, reachable web and RTMP ports, host resources, and any separate YouTube forwarding process. NGINX with the module, its configuration, a media source and relay path, and the processes needed to keep them running.

These are different layers, not interchangeable products. Owncast is closer to a packaged streaming service for an audience watching its own site. nginx-rtmp is a set of configurable server capabilities. Neither is automatically a pre-recorded-video playlist player, a complete YouTube channel manager, or a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.

Sources: Owncast broadcasting documentation, Owncast video documentation, and the nginx-rtmp README.

Which should you choose for a 24/7 YouTube channel?

Choose Owncast when the separate viewing service matters

Owncast makes sense when you want an audience to watch through Owncast’s viewer-facing playback and you are prepared to run and maintain that service. Its RTMP ingest is only one part of the route to YouTube: plan a separately configured forwarder or encoder if YouTube is also a destination. The more conversion, output qualities, or frame rate you ask the server to handle, the more resource demand you should expect.

Choose nginx-rtmp when you need configurable media plumbing

nginx-rtmp is the better conceptual fit when you want to build a relay or media workflow around NGINX, including options such as recording, HLS/DASH output, and FFmpeg integration. That flexibility means configuration and operations are yours to manage. A relay does not create a content playlist or supervise every process needed for an always-on channel.

Neither is a universal winner

There is no comparative benchmark establishing better uptime, audience capacity, cost, or long-duration performance for either approach. The outcome depends on configuration, workload, host, network, and operational practices. Select based on the architecture you actually need, then test the real feed and viewer scale on the intended host.

How the YouTube connection fits in

YouTube treats the encoder as the sender: its Live Control Room provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder to use. The choice between Owncast and nginx-rtmp does not change those YouTube credentials or automatically complete the route. Decide where the feed originates, which component sends it to YouTube, and how that component will be supervised. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

  1. Choose the feed source. Identify the live encoder or process that will produce the continuous feed. If you are looping recorded video, configure that playback source separately; neither server choice alone supplies a playlist.
  2. Choose the YouTube sender. For nginx-rtmp, configure a relay path using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For Owncast, do not assume the documented ingest endpoint forwards onward; use a separately configured forwarder or encoder.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in a web page, logs, screenshots, or an exposed configuration. Use the key associated with the intended YouTube stream.
  4. Test the complete route. Confirm that the source reaches the sending component, YouTube receives the feed, audio and video remain synchronized, and a restart or network interruption has a defined recovery path.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Its encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR) and keyframes every 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that the actual encoder and relay support the protocol and codec combination you select; use the current values and options in YouTube’s encoder settings rather than assuming every path supports every listed format. YouTube’s guidance is to use RTMPS for encrypted ingest: RTMPS guidance.

What you need to keep either setup running

  • An always-available source: a camera, encoder, or playback process that produces the stream. A server receiving RTMP does not itself create continuous content.
  • Reliable host and network capacity: the host must sustain the input and any conversion or output work; the connection must sustain the outgoing stream. If you transcode, budget for that work as well as bandwidth.
  • Process supervision and monitoring: decide how services start at boot, how failures are detected, and what restarts them. Owncast recommends system-service operation for background use and start-on-boot; either architecture still needs monitoring and maintenance.
  • Recovery planning: define what happens if YouTube, the host, the source, or the network disconnects. A configured relay is not proof of automatic recovery.
  • Session and archive policy: decide whether to run one long stream session or manage sessions, and keep a local recording if a complete archive matters.

Owncast setup considerations

Owncast accepts RTMP on port 1935 by default. Its documented publish URL uses /live/ followed by the stream key. The installation instructions describe the web and RTMP ports and recommend running Owncast as a system service when it needs to operate in the background and start on boot. The initial admin credentials and stream key shown in installation guidance are for first setup; change them immediately and do not expose them as production credentials.

Owncast can process video for its HLS playback. Conversion, higher frame rates, and additional output qualities increase resource demands, so the source quality must stay within what the host can sustain. Its documentation also describes third-party storage for distributing segments. Treat the examples as configuration guidance, not as a performance guarantee for your machine or audience. See Owncast installation, broadcasting, and video quality.

nginx-rtmp setup considerations

The nginx-rtmp project documents building NGINX with the module and configuring an application with options such as live ingest, recording, relay, HLS/DASH, and FFmpeg. Those are building blocks, not a finished continuous-channel setup. You remain responsible for deployment and configuration, the source that stays active, YouTube’s stream URL and key, process recovery, health checks, and any session policy. Start with the nginx-rtmp README and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR caveats

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. For an always-on channel, do not promise that one indefinitely running session will produce a complete YouTube archive or unrestricted rewind. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy, and consult YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong server URL or key, sender configuration, or protocol compatibility. Recheck the current URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the encoder or relay supports the selected RTMP/RTMPS path, and test the sender-to-YouTube leg independently.
Owncast receives a feed but YouTube does not The feed ends at Owncast; automatic onward forwarding has not been established by the cited Owncast broadcasting documentation. Configure and supervise a separate forwarder or encoder to send the feed to YouTube.
The stream stops after a process or host interruption No effective process supervision, restart policy, or health monitoring. Check service startup and restart behavior, system logs, and alerts; test recovery deliberately before relying on unattended operation.
Playback stutters or the host struggles Insufficient host resources for conversion, extra output qualities, frame rate, or workload; network limits can also affect delivery. Measure the intended workflow on the target host, reduce conversion/output workload if needed, and verify sustained upload capacity.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete A single stream session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Maintain a local recording and plan session handling around YouTube’s archive guidance.
Rewind is unavailable on a long stream YouTube DVR can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Set viewer expectations and do not rely on YouTube DVR as the only replay option.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to loop uploaded videos on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids operating an Owncast or nginx-rtmp server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream going without a computer or home connection left running. It streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.

Costs and practical trade-offs

Self-hosting does not make operating costs disappear: account for the host, network, storage, conversion workload, and time spent configuring, monitoring, and maintaining the system. The cited documentation does not establish a universal total-cost comparison or performance winner. Owncast documents ARM64 builds and says Raspberry Pi boards are covered by ARM64 and ARM7 builds; that makes a Raspberry Pi 5 a possible architecture-based host example, not an official validation of its capacity or reliability for a particular resolution, conversion workload, or audience. Size and test any host against the real feed and expected viewers.

StreamNeo is a paid cloud alternative for looping uploaded video to YouTube. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, and support; quality is whatever you upload up to 4K 60fps. The product is the same across billing lengths. See StreamNeo pricing. For planning, use the upload-time calculator, cloud vs PC cost calculator, and copyright safety checklist.
