The reliable design is to send a pre-encoded feed through an RTMPS-capable encoder or a verified relay to the exact server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Size the VPS for sustained network egress first; CPU needs depend on whether it only relays or also encodes.
How the stream reaches YouTube
Think of the setup as separate stages rather than one “NGINX stream”:
- Source: a video file, playlist, camera, or other feed.
- Encoder: produces the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio format.
- Optional NGINX relay: accepts a contribution stream and forwards it onward.
- YouTube Live ingest: receives the outgoing feed using the account-specific server URL and stream key.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP through TLS. The NGINX RTMP module’s documented support for RTMP, HLS, and DASH does not by itself prove that a particular NGINX build can make an encrypted RTMPS push to YouTube. Confirm that the exact module/build supports outbound TLS and the required hostname/SNI behavior, or use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder such as FFmpeg. YouTube’s RTMPS API requirements specify port 443 and a valid endpoint/path; the hostname is significant to TLS SNI. YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements and NGINX module documentation describe different parts of this path.
If an encoder publishes to NGINX from another machine, restrict who can publish and protect the key. Do not expose stream keys in public configuration repositories, screenshots, or logs. A YouTube key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the associated stream.

Choose direct encoding or an NGINX relay
| Approach | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder on VPS directly to YouTube | The VPS runs the source/playlist and a compatible encoder; this avoids adding an ingest-and-forward hop. | RTMPS/TLS and SNI support, restart supervision, CPU capacity for any encoding, and outbound access to YouTube’s current endpoint. |
| Encoder to NGINX relay, then YouTube | A separate source or encoder needs to publish into the VPS, or a relay is part of the intended architecture. | Restrict publisher access, secure credentials, confirm the exact NGINX build can forward to YouTube over RTMPS, and account for the additional network leg. |
These are architecture choices, not tested head-to-head configurations. A relay forwarding already encoded media generally uses less CPU than software encoding or transcoding; either workload still needs dependable egress. NGINX’s official dynamic-module instructions cover the NGINX Plus package and should not be treated as a compatibility matrix for every open-source or third-party build.
Set YouTube’s ingest details and encoder correctly
- Check account eligibility and current Live Control Room details. Open YouTube Live Control Room and use the stream settings to select or reveal RTMPS. Copy the current server URL and stream key from the account; do not rely on an old static ingest address or a key copied from an example.
- Configure the outgoing connection as RTMPS. Use the exact endpoint, path, port, and key supplied for the stream. YouTube identifies cleartext RTMP or an incorrect server/port as common causes of SSL connection failures. Its RTMPS API requirements specify port 443.
- Match encoder settings to the video you are sending. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s matching recommendation. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance checked in 2026 lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations for those modes, not guarantees of stability or VPS sizing rules. Check the current table for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than extrapolating from these examples.
- Test a representative stream before relying on it. Run an upload-speed test, then test content with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room during the test. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured input.
For the current settings and test guidance, see YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance. YouTube’s API also models primary and backup RTMPS addresses along with resolution and frame-rate fields, reinforcing the need to use the ingestion details associated with the account rather than hard-code assumptions: LiveStreams resource.

Estimate bandwidth and choose a VPS
A continuous stream uses sustained outbound transfer, not just a burst during setup. A useful first-order estimate is:
Approximate monthly egress in decimal GB = bitrate in Mbps × 324.

This assumes one uninterrupted 30-day stream: 1 Mbps transfers about 10.8 GB per day, or about 324 GB in 30 days, before protocol overhead and any other traffic. At YouTube’s cited H.264 examples, that is roughly 3,240 GB at 10 Mbps, 3,888 GB at 12 Mbps, or 1,944 GB at 6 Mbps for a 30-day period. Treat these as arithmetic estimates, not a provider allowance or a measured transfer total; include overhead, reconnects, and any extra inbound or outbound workloads when checking a plan.
The National Informatics Centre (Government of India) says its webcast service requires dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream and asks users to verify outbound RTMP port 1935. That is a NIC webcast/venue reference, with no year stated on the accessed page; it is not a YouTube resolution recommendation, a VPS guarantee, or evidence that YouTube RTMPS on port 443 will work. For a YouTube VPS, use the actual encoder bitrate and confirm outbound access to the selected YouTube endpoint and port. See NIC webcast services.

Check these items with the VPS provider
- Monthly transfer allowance and whether egress is metered, capped, or charged separately.
- Network limits, traffic shaping, sustained-throughput policies, and any rules affecting continuous workloads.
- CPU allocation and policy, especially if the VPS will encode or transcode rather than relay.
- India-region availability, route stability to YouTube’s ingest, support arrangements, and acceptable-use terms.
- Whether the selected plan permits the intended always-on workload and allows the required outbound port.
There is no universal VPS size established for this workload: an already encoded relay and a software encoder have different CPU requirements. No provider plan, price, or India route has been tested here, so verify current terms with the provider and validate the route with a sustained stream before committing to unattended use.
Keep a 24/7 stream recoverable and secure
- Supervise the encoder process. Configure the operating system or process manager to restart the encoder after a crash or reboot; alert on repeated restarts rather than letting a restart loop go unnoticed.
- Plan for YouTube disconnects. Check how the selected encoder or relay reconnects, how it handles a dropped ingest, and whether it resumes the intended media position. Verify behavior during a test instead of assuming reconnects are seamless.
- Watch health and logs. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder/NGINX logs for authentication errors, TLS/SSL failures, bitrate drops, network interruptions, and repeated reconnects. Keep secrets out of logs.
- Protect the publishing endpoint. Restrict NGINX publish access to trusted sources, use firewall rules where appropriate, and rotate the YouTube stream key if it is exposed.
- Review content rights and YouTube policy. A technically continuous feed is not automatically eligible for monetization or free of copyright issues. Use material you have rights to stream, and review current YouTube policies on copyright, reused content, and live-stream eligibility before scheduling a long-running channel.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| TLS or SSL connection error | Cleartext RTMP was selected, the endpoint/port is wrong, or the client/build does not support the needed TLS/SNI behavior. | Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, verify port 443 and hostname handling, and test the exact encoder or module build. |
| YouTube shows no incoming video | Wrong server URL or stream key, encoder not publishing, or the VPS cannot reach the ingest endpoint. | Recheck the account’s current stream settings, encoder output logs, outbound network access, and Live Control Room status. |
| Stream health reports unstable bitrate | Insufficient sustained egress, contention, shaping, or an encoder bitrate that does not fit the stream mode/network. | Compare the actual sending bitrate with the matching YouTube recommendation, run a sustained test, and check provider transfer/network constraints. |
| Stream stops after an encoder or VPS restart | No process supervision or reconnect/restart strategy. | Configure and test restart supervision, verify the encoder reconnects with the correct key, and monitor for repeated failures. |
| NGINX accepts a local RTMP stream but YouTube does not connect | Local RTMP ingest works, but outbound RTMPS may be unsupported or misconfigured. | Test the exact outbound module/build for TLS, endpoint path, port, and SNI; alternatively send from a known RTMPS-capable encoder. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an uploaded-video or playlist stream on YouTube rather than configuring and maintaining a VPS relay, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

Frequently asked questions
Can NGINX RTMP push to YouTube RTMPS?
Possibly, but the label “NGINX RTMP” is not enough to establish it. Verify TLS, SNI, and outbound RTMPS support in the exact module/build and test its YouTube handshake; otherwise use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder.
Does NIC’s 2–4 Mbps figure determine the bitrate for my channel?
No. It is a bandwidth requirement stated for NIC’s webcast service context, not a YouTube bitrate setting. Use YouTube’s guidance for your chosen output mode and ensure the VPS has enough sustained egress.
Recommended Free Tools
Will YouTube accept a 24/7 feed?
Technical ingestion settings do not establish account eligibility or policy approval. Check current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and content policies for the account and material you plan to broadcast.
