The bill depends chiefly on the stream’s bitrate, whether your VPS relays an already encoded feed or also encodes it, and how the provider counts India-region data transfer. Published examples include AWS Lightsail bundles priced in USD and an Indian provider’s advertised INR starting price, but they are not equivalent plans or confirmed all-in costs.
What determines the monthly cost?
Data transfer is often the deciding factor
A continuous stream moves a large amount of data. For a 30-day month, one direction of traffic is approximately B × 324 GB, where B is the bitrate in Mbps. This is a decimal-unit calculation from bitrate and runtime, before protocol overhead; it is not a provider benchmark.
At 8 Mbps, that works out to about 2.59 TB in one direction over 30 days. If the VPS receives a full-rate feed and sends a full-rate copy to YouTube, the combined inbound and outbound volume could reach about 5.18 TB before overhead. Actual usage depends on the feed and the host’s accounting rules. AWS says both inbound and outbound instance transfer count toward a Lightsail allowance, while excess outbound transfer may be chargeable.
Region and overage terms change the arithmetic
Do not assume an advertised transfer allowance applies in full to a Mumbai VPS. AWS states that Mumbai Lightsail plans receive half the normal allowance; its listed Mumbai instance overage rate is $0.13 per GB for excess outbound data. Check the selected region’s current allowance, what traffic counts toward it, and whether exceeding it leads to a charge, throttling, or suspension.

A relay is not the same workload as encoding
An Nginx RTMP relay forwards an already encoded signal. Encoding or transcoding adds CPU work and can change the server requirements. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not specify a minimum VPS size, and the cited provider information does not establish a guaranteed minimum server size for either job. Treat server sizing as workload-specific rather than assuming one bundle is suitable for every setup.
Administration is part of the cost
A self-managed VPS means you are responsible for configuring Nginx, supplying the feed, monitoring the server, and recovering it when something fails. A managed cloud streaming service is a different option for someone who would rather avoid server administration; assess its current features and terms separately.

The figures below are published examples captured in 2026, not a like-for-like price comparison or a quote for a complete 24/7 setup.

The AWS figures are USD cloud bundle list prices, while Inservers advertises an INR starting price. They do not establish comparable total costs: the selected plan, transfer rules, taxes, region, and workload all matter. Prices and service terms can change, so confirm them with the provider before purchasing.

Estimate the bandwidth before choosing a VPS
- Choose the stream bitrate. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not VPS sizing requirements.
- Calculate one direction for 30 days. Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 324 GB. At 8 Mbps, the estimate is about 2.59 TB one way; at 14 Mbps, it is about 4.54 TB one way. These estimates use decimal units and exclude overhead.
- Account for the topology. If the VPS receives a full-rate encoded feed and relays a full-rate copy, add the inbound and outbound volumes when checking the provider’s transfer accounting. At 8 Mbps, that could be about 5.18 TB combined before overhead.
- Compare the result with the selected region’s terms. Check included transfer, inbound and outbound counting, overage pricing, and what happens when the allowance is exceeded. For example, AWS’s general Lightsail allowance is halved in Mumbai, and its listed Mumbai transfer-out overage is $0.13/GB.
The calculation is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed invoice. Use the actual bitrate and runtime, allow for protocol overhead, and verify the provider’s data-transfer definitions.
What to confirm before buying
- Location: Is the VPS actually in India, and is the advertised plan available in the region you need?
- Transfer: What is included each month? Do both directions count? What is the overage price, and are there throttling or suspension terms?
- Workload: Are you relaying an encoded feed or encoding/transcoding on the server? Ask the provider about the specific workload rather than relying on an untested minimum-spec claim.
- Total invoice: Confirm taxes, billing period, public IPv4 charges if applicable, and any network fees. Do not treat a starting price or list price as a tax-inclusive total.
- Operations: Establish who configures and monitors Nginx, supplies the feed, and handles recovery if the process or server stops.
Using Nginx RTMP to relay to YouTube
The cost estimate assumes a working setup; the following outlines the relay flow without prescribing a VPS size. Google’s YouTube Help recommends streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.

- Prepare an encoded input. The source must already provide a live encoded feed if the VPS is only acting as a relay. If the server must encode or transcode, account for that as a separate workload and validate its capacity for your settings.
- Configure Nginx RTMP on the VPS. Set up an RTMP application that accepts the incoming feed and forwards it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Restrict access to the input and protect the YouTube stream key; do not expose it in public configuration or logs.
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream, obtain its stream key and ingest details, and use the supported secure ingest option where available. Enter the key only in the trusted streaming configuration.
- Start the source and verify the relay. Confirm that the VPS receives the feed and forwards it, then check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream health before relying on it. Monitor both the source-to-server and server-to-YouTube legs.
- Plan for continuous operation. Configure the service to start after a reboot, monitor the process and network usage, and decide how you will restore the source or relay after a failure. A VPS price by itself does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Using Nginx as a relay does not grant rights to the video or audio being streamed. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules for copyright and reused content. A technically active 24/7 stream is not, by itself, evidence that its content complies with those rules or qualifies for monetization.
