NextGen Healthcare said a 2023 intrusion exposed personal information belonging to approximately one million patients, including names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security numbers. The company said it found no evidence that medical records or other protected health information were accessed. The class-action settlement became final in March 2026; the deadline to claim cash has passed, though eligible class members may still enroll in identity defense services under the settlement’s fixed service period.
What happened in the NextGen Healthcare breach?
NextGen Healthcare’s 2023 SEC filing says the company became aware on January 6, 2023, of unauthorized access to a limited part of its corporate network. It described the incident as a sophisticated cyberattack, said it began an investigation with outside forensic experts, and reported that it contained the threat and eradicated it from its network.
The date range in California’s notice record is different: the California Attorney General’s breach-notice sample records breach dates of March 29 through April 14, 2023. January 6 was NextGen’s stated discovery date; March 29–April 14 is the range shown in the state notice sample. The available records do not explain that difference, so the dates should not be treated as interchangeable.
What information did the breach expose?
NextGen reported that its review found personal information belonging to approximately one million patients in the data accessed. The company identified names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security numbers.

Did the breach include medical records?
NextGen said it found no evidence that protected health information or medical records were accessed. That is the company’s reported finding, not an independently verified guarantee that no health-related information was involved or that the personal information exposed posed no risk.
Was my information exposed, and what did NextGen do?
The reported total does not establish whether a particular person was affected. Check any breach notice you received or contact the settlement administrator through the court-approved settlement website to confirm individual eligibility; do not infer inclusion from the approximate one-million figure.

NextGen said it mailed written notices to impacted individuals on April 28, 2023, notified affected clients, state regulatory authorities and the three credit bureaus, and offered 24 months of fraud detection monitoring and identity theft protection. California’s notice record includes a sample of the individual notification letter.
Is the NextGen Healthcare settlement still open?
As of October 4, 2026, the court-approved website for Miller et al. v. NextGen Healthcare, Inc., Case No. 1:23-cv-02043-TWT, says final approval was granted February 17, 2026, and the settlement became final March 20, 2026. The website lists a $19,375,000 settlement fund. Consult the court-approved settlement website for eligibility and current instructions.

Cash claims are closed
The deadline to submit a cash claim was March 30, 2026, and has passed. The settlement website describes claims for documented out-of-pocket losses and lost time, as well as an alternative cash payment. It lists the alternative payment as $50 for general class members and $150 for the California subclass, subject to pro rata adjustments. These are not guaranteed payments to every affected person.
Identity defense enrollment remains available during a fixed service period
The settlement website says eligible class members may enroll in identity defense services without an enrollment deadline. The services end three years after March 20, 2026, regardless of when a person enrolls; restoration services are available during that service period. Check the settlement site for the applicable eligibility rules and enrollment instructions.

The separate 2023 DOJ settlement was not the breach case
In July 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a separate $31 million settlement of False Claims Act allegations involving NextGen’s EHR software certification and alleged remuneration to users who recommended the software. DOJ said the claims were allegations and that there had been no determination of liability. This was not the data-breach settlement and should not be confused with the network intrusion.
