Supporters had gathered near Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout in Wallsend to watch the Newcastle Knights’ team bus leave for Sydney ahead of the NRL grand final. What did police say about the driver and the investigation?
Police said the driver, an 18-year-old provisional-licence holder, was arrested. ABC reported Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said police alleged the car had been driven “erratically” before entering the crowd and expected to lay charges. ABC also reported police said the incident was not targeted. The Guardian reported police said initial inquiries did not indicate a terror-related incident. Those are attributed statements made while inquiries were active—not final findings about cause or motive. The cited coverage does not establish a final charge, court outcome or settled explanation of how the collision occurred.

The Guardian also quoted Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris describing the driver as appearing to rev the car before losing control. Morris stressed that the incident was under investigation; his account should not be treated as a definitive police finding.
How did emergency services and the club respond?
ABC reported that three emergency-services helicopters and 15 ambulances attended, supporters helped provide first aid, and several patients were taken to John Hunter Hospital. The Knights diverted their bus and expressed support for those injured, their families and people who witnessed the collision.

Newcastle Police Minister Yasmin Catley, speaking at the scene, called it “an absolute tragedy — a tragedy that needn’t have happened,” according to ABC’s report.

Knights CEO Peter Parr said the gathering had been intended as a special occasion for thousands of Novocastrians to farewell the team and show support before the grand final, but had “understandably turned into a distressing morning,” ABC reported.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris’s published statement said: “This terrible incident is hard, and it’s okay to feel it.” He urged people in Newcastle and the Hunter to support one another in the days and weeks ahead. Inside Local Government reproduced the statement.
