If email arrived in new Outlook but your calendar or contacts did not, first check whether those items were included in the file you imported. Importing copies selected data into a chosen account or folder; syncing makes supported account data available across Outlook clients. The right fix depends on whether you imported a PST, imported a contacts CSV, or expected an account to sync automatically.
First identify what you imported and where
“New Outlook” here means the new Outlook for Windows app; steps differ in classic Outlook, Outlook.com, and mobile apps. Determine which of these describes your situation before importing again:
- PST: A data file that can contain email, calendar items, and contacts. In new Outlook, importing selected PST contents into a mailbox is different from opening or adding the PST as a data file.
- Contacts CSV: A separate file-based route for contacts, including contacts saved locally in classic Outlook.
- Account sync: Adding an account can make supported data available through that account, but support depends on the account provider, Outlook client, and connection type.
Microsoft documents the new Outlook PST workflow separately from classic Outlook in its PST import instructions.
If a PST import brought in email but not calendar or contacts
Check the PST’s contents first
Microsoft says a likely reason email imported without calendar or contacts is that those items were not exported to the PST. Check the original Outlook data and, if needed, repeat the export with the relevant folders included. If the items are in subfolders, include subfolders as appropriate. Repeating an import cannot restore items that were never put in the PST. See Microsoft’s PST import troubleshooting guidance.

Confirm the source selection and destination
- In new Outlook for Windows, open Settings > Data files > Import.
- Select the PST, then choose the source folder containing the missing items.
- Leave Include subfolders checked if the items may be in subfolders. Microsoft’s instruction is: “To import the selected folder and its subfolders, leave the Include subfolders box checked.”
- Choose the duplicate-handling option shown, then select the destination account and folder.
- Run the import and inspect the selected destination—not just the account’s default view—for the imported items.
Opening or adding a PST is not the same as importing its contents into a mailbox. If you only added the file as a data file, the items may remain in that file rather than appear in the destination mailbox.
Check requirements only when opening a PST
Microsoft lists separate requirements for opening or accessing a PST as a data file in new Outlook: classic Outlook must also be installed, both Outlook versions must have the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, the new Outlook account must have a Microsoft 365 subscription, and new Outlook must not be running in Safe or Recovery mode. Outlook Data Files are not supported with the ARM version. These requirements apply to opening/accessing the PST; a subscription by itself does not guarantee that every migration workflow will work. See Microsoft’s PST instructions and requirements.

If contacts were saved locally in classic Outlook
Signing in to the same email account in new Outlook does not necessarily bring over contacts saved only on the old computer. Microsoft’s documented route is to export those contacts from classic Outlook as a CSV file, then import the CSV into new Outlook. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for importing contacts from a CSV file and select the intended destination.
If the CSV import appears to do nothing
- Open the CSV in a spreadsheet editor and check that it contains contact records, not just a header row or an empty file.
- Check that the first row has usable column headings and that the file remains in CSV format.
- If it has no records, return to classic Outlook and export the intended contacts or group again.
- If Outlook.com rejects the format, Microsoft advises using its sample CSV format and copying the data into the corresponding columns.
See Microsoft’s guidance on contacts missing after import, contact import problems, and the Outlook.com CSV format.

If calendar or contacts should sync from another account
Check the provider and Outlook client before treating this as a failed import. Microsoft Cloud sync copies supported email, calendar, and contact data between a supported third-party provider and Microsoft data centers. The providers supported vary by client; Microsoft’s current page lists Gmail and Yahoo for new Outlook for Windows. Support described for another Outlook client does not establish that iCloud or arbitrary IMAP account contacts and calendars will sync in new Outlook for Windows. Review Microsoft’s account sync guidance.
On a phone or tablet
- Confirm that calendar sync is enabled for the account and that Outlook has device contact permission when relevant.
- Check how the account was added. Microsoft says IMAP and POP sync email, not calendar or contacts.
- If the account cannot be configured using Exchange or ActiveSync where supported, consult the provider or your organization’s administrator about available account setup options.
Microsoft’s mobile calendar and contacts guidance covers sync configuration and account support.

Choose the transfer route that matches the data
| Route | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PST import | Email, calendar, or contacts contained in a PST | That the PST contains the missing items, the correct source folder and subfolders are selected, and the destination account and folder are right. |
| CSV import | Contacts exported from classic Outlook or another source | That the CSV has contact records, usable headings, and a format accepted by the destination. |
| Account sync | Ongoing access to data held by a supported online account | That the provider and data type are supported in the specific Outlook client and that the account is configured for the needed sync. |
A one-time import and ongoing sync solve different problems. An imported copy does not, by itself, establish future synchronization with the source account.
When to contact support
If the source file contains the missing items, the right folders were selected, and the account and client support the expected data, collect the details that can distinguish a file, account, or build issue:
