That is a 75% year-over-year increase in the flagged share. The figures come from EasyDMARC technology and do not represent every inbox, email provider, or internet user.
What the 75% increase actually measures
The comparison covers two six-month periods, not a count of all suspicious messages worldwide.
| Period | Messages observed | Messages flagged | Flagged share |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–June 2022 | Almost 2.5 billion | More than 250 million | 10.21% |
| January–June 2023 | 4.34 billion | More than 769 million | 17.73% |
EasyDMARC describes the change from 10.21% to 17.73% as a 75% increase in the proportion of observed mail flagged as imitating legitimate domains. It also reported that the average flagged volume per domain rose from 16,298 messages in the first half of 2022 to 20,210 in the first half of 2023, a 24% increase.
The release projected a share of about 20% by the end of 2023. That was a forecast, not a verified year-end result.

Why this is not a universal inbox statistic
The data was collected from EasyDMARC technology across customer domains in ten countries. The published material does not provide a country-by-country breakdown, detailed sampling design, raw data, or an independent audit. Consequently, the percentages should not be extrapolated to all global email or interpreted as the probability that a particular person’s inbox contains phishing.
“Suspicious” in this report means mail that the company’s technology flagged as imitating legitimate domains. A flag is not proof that a message was delivered to a recipient’s inbox, that it was malicious, or that it bypassed a provider’s filters.

What DMARC does
DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance. Under RFC 7489, a domain owner publishes a policy and receives feedback about messages claiming to use that domain.
Authentication and alignment
A receiving system checks whether SPF or DKIM authentication succeeds and whether the authenticated domain aligns with the domain shown in the message’s visible From address. The receiver can then apply the domain owner’s DMARC policy.

Policy choices
| Policy | Purpose | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Monitoring (no enforcement) | Collect reports while mail is observed normally. | Provides visibility but does not ask receivers to isolate or reject failing mail. |
| Quarantine | Ask receivers to treat failing messages as suspicious, commonly by placing them in spam or a quarantine area. | Raises enforcement while creating a risk that incorrectly configured legitimate senders are diverted. |
| Reject | Ask receivers to refuse messages that fail the domain’s DMARC requirements. | Offers the strongest policy signal but can interrupt legitimate mail until every authorized sender is configured and aligned. |
DMARC is a domain-owner control and a source of telemetry. It helps receiving systems decide how to handle mail that claims to come from a protected domain; it is not a universal inbox-cleaning service.
How DMARC helps with spoofing—and where it stops
Exact-domain spoofing
DMARC is designed to expose and help control messages that use an organization’s actual domain in the visible sender address without passing aligned SPF or DKIM checks. Reports can show which systems are sending mail with that domain and whether those messages authenticate correctly.

- A SMART START FOR YOUR HOME: This five-piece kit includes one SpeakerHub, two indoor door/window sensors, one indoor motion sensor and one AlarmFob. Monitor entry points and room activity, hear customized alerts at home and check device status in the YoLink app.
- HEAR WHAT IS HAPPENING: Set SpeakerHub to play a selected sound or a custom spoken message, such as Front door opened or Motion detected in the hallway. Configure alerts and automations in the app. SpeakerHub has no microphone and requires power, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and internet for its audio features.
- SELF-MONITOR WITHOUT A MONTHLY FEE: Receive app push and email notifications for configured door and motion events, and share access with family through the YoLink app. Remote access and notifications require an internet-connected, powered SpeakerHub. Optional paid notification services are separate.
- THAT WAS EASY: Power SpeakerHub with the included USB cable and adapter, connect it to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and scan each device QR code in the YoLink app. Install the sensors, configure your alert preferences and test the system. SpeakerHub does not have an Ethernet port; a compatible Android or Apple smartphone is required.
- MORE THAN A DOOR ALARM: Check open/closed status and door activity history, set left-open reminders and use motion events in your routines. AlarmFob provides four programmable buttons for configured alarm modes, scenes and compatible device controls, so everyday actions are close at hand.
Lookalike domains and display-name attacks
DMARC does not address every phishing technique. RFC 7489 excludes content analysis and does not protect against visually similar “cousin” domains, such as a misspelled company name, or a deceptive display name attached to an unrelated address.
Messages that pass authentication
A message that passes DMARC is not guaranteed to be safe. A compromised, authorized account or a malicious message sent from a properly authenticated domain can still contain fraud or malware. Content filtering, link and attachment analysis, user training, and account-security controls remain necessary.

How organizations can use DMARC reports
- Inventory authorized senders. List marketing platforms, help-desk systems, cloud services, applications, and internal mail servers that send with the organization’s domain.
- Publish a monitoring policy. Add a DMARC DNS record that requests aggregate feedback while legitimate sending sources are identified. Monitoring avoids immediately rejecting mail that has not yet been configured correctly.
- Review authentication and alignment. Use reports to distinguish authorized systems that need SPF or DKIM changes from unauthorized sources attempting to use the domain.
- Fix legitimate failures. Configure each approved sender so its SPF or DKIM result aligns with the visible From domain. Check forwarding and third-party services, which can complicate authentication.
- Increase enforcement gradually. Move from monitoring toward quarantine and, when legitimate traffic is consistently accounted for, rejection. Watch for unintended loss of valid mail after each change.
- Keep monitoring. New vendors, applications, and infrastructure changes can create authentication failures after a policy has been tightened.
Organizations with large or complex sending environments may use managed DMARC monitoring to aggregate and interpret reports, but the protocol itself is implemented through DNS and mail-system configuration rather than special hardware.
What businesses and individual readers should take from the finding
For domain owners
The EasyDMARC figures indicate a substantial increase in domain-imitating messages within its observed customer data. The practical response is to establish visibility, authenticate every legitimate sender, and enforce a DMARC policy carefully rather than assuming a single record will eliminate phishing.
For email users
Do not treat a familiar display name or a message that appears to come from a known company as proof of authenticity. Inspect the actual address, be cautious with unexpected links and attachments, and verify payment or account-change requests through a separate channel. DMARC can help a provider handle some spoofed-domain mail, but it cannot identify every fraudulent message.
Quick Recap
How to interpret the headline without overstating it
- The measured change was from 10.21% to 17.73% of mail observed by EasyDMARC technology during matching six-month periods.
- The study covered 15,440 domains in ten countries, not every sender or inbox.
- EasyDMARC reported 24% more flagged messages per domain in the first half of 2023.
- The approximately 20% year-end 2023 figure was a projection.
- DMARC addresses aligned authentication and domain policy; it does not replace broader phishing and malware defenses.
