To decide whether a new AAA game or an indie game is worth your money, compare the specific games at their current local prices—not the labels. Check what each version includes, whether its gameplay suits you, how it fits your hardware and play habits, what may cost extra, and the refund terms of the store where you plan to buy. Neither category guarantees better value.

Start with the price you will actually pay

Compare listings for the same region, platform, currency, edition, and sale status. A base game at launch, a discounted base game, and a deluxe bundle are different offers. Store prices and discounts change, so check the relevant listing on the platform where you intend to play.

There is no reliable price threshold that makes a game good or poor value, and the labels “AAA” and “indie” do not establish what a game costs. Steam’s developer guidance says developers set their own prices and recommends considering the experience offered, comparable products, customer expectations, and feedback: Steamworks pricing guidance. That advice is specific to Steam; other storefronts set their own policies and listings.

Compare the experience, not just the hours

Ask what you want to play, then assess each game against that preference. Genre is only a starting point: consider mechanics, tone, story, accessibility, replayability, and whether the game supports the length and style of sessions you prefer.

  • Play pattern: Will you play in short sessions, focus on a campaign, or return for repeat play? Use reliable playtime information if it is available, but do not treat hours per dollar as a quality score.
  • Technical fit: Confirm that the game is available for your device and check current platform-specific performance, storage needs, controls, and accessibility features.
  • Personal fit: Consider whether the particular game’s design and presentation appeal to you. A longer game can be poor value if it is not what you want; a shorter, focused experience can be worth the price.

Check what the purchase includes—and what it does not

Read the exact edition description before checkout. Compare the base game with any deluxe or bundle offer, and identify content that is sold separately. Steam’s pricing documentation describes several models, including a full-game purchase, downloadable content, in-game purchases, and recurring subscriptions. These are possible models, not a claim that any particular game uses them.

  • Which game and bonus content are included in this edition?
  • Are expansions, DLC, or other add-ons sold separately?
  • Does the game offer in-game purchases or a recurring subscription?
  • Does playing online require a subscription, account, or ongoing access?

Compare alternatives at the same budget

Ask what else you could buy for the same amount today. The fairest alternatives share the qualities you care about—such as genre, audience, or scope—and have a price you can verify on the same platform and in the same region. Comparing an expensive launch edition with an unrelated game’s temporary sale can obscure the trade-off.

Price patterns in the wider market are context, not a buying rule. GamesRadar reported GameDiscoverCo analysis of new Steam best-sellers from February 2023 to October 2025: the reported median price fell 20% in the units-ranked sample and 14% in the revenue-ranked sample. Those figures describe the report’s samples and ranking methods, not every Steam game, every indie or AAA release, or the price of a specific listing today: GamesRadar’s report of the analysis.

Check the store’s refund terms before buying

Refund rules depend on the storefront and the purchase. If you are buying on Steam, consult its refund FAQ for the applicable terms; Steam also says eligibility information for in-game purchases is shown at purchase. These Steam-specific details do not apply automatically to other stores, and a refund is not guaranteed. For another platform, read that store’s current policy and the listing’s terms.

Make the choice against your priorities

Choose the AAA release if that particular game’s scale, presentation, franchise, or play style is worth its extra cost to you. Choose the indie game if its specific design and current price better match what you want. Before paying, compare the exact listings, included content, likely ongoing costs, technical fit, alternatives, and store terms; the category name alone cannot settle the question.
