Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the company expects to remain in gaming and sees mobile games as a path toward cloud gaming on televisions. His “post-console world” phrase describes an opportunity Netflix wants to pursue—not evidence that dedicated consoles are disappearing. Netflix has already announced TV games that use a phone as the controller, giving the idea a concrete product example.

What Sarandos said about Netflix’s gaming future

At Bloomberg’s Screentime event, Sarandos was asked whether Netflix would still be involved in games five years later. Kotaku reported on October 2, 2026, that he said he thought so, describing mobile gaming as a “gateway to cloud gaming.” He highlighted playing on a television with a phone as the remote, and said Netflix wanted to be an early investor in opportunities for gaming on TV.

He also pointed to extending intellectual property, strengthening Netflix’s brand, and offering an option for people who would rather play games on the television than watch shows. The wording below is Kotaku’s report of his remarks; an event transcript was not independently located:

“I think so. Really, what’s exciting right now, and the mobile gaming was a gateway to cloud gaming, we were much more interested in what you could do on the TV using your phone as a remote. And remember, in a kind of post-console world, there’s going to be all kinds of opportunities for gaming on the television.

Kotaku’s report also says Sarandos characterized Netflix’s growth as primarily organic and said the company would pursue opportunities that complement its business, including gaming. Those remarks do not amount to an announcement that Netflix will never acquire a game company, nor do they describe a plan to buy a major publisher.

What Netflix has announced for TV gaming

Netflix’s FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition announcement describes a TV game played with a phone as the controller and the television as the display. Netflix said the game would be included with membership, support up to four players, and become available on June 11, 2026. In the same June 4 announcement, Netflix said TV games were available in 20 countries. That country count is a dated statement, not a current availability guarantee.

The phone-controller format is a direct example of the television experience Sarandos discussed. It does not, by itself, establish a full future game catalog, rollout schedule, or which current TV models and streaming devices can run the service.

Does “post-console world” mean consoles are going away?

No. In the reported remarks, “post-console world” is Sarandos’s framing of potential opportunities to play on televisions; it is not proof that dedicated consoles are disappearing or that Netflix has predicted when they might. The material cited here does not provide a statistic about cloud-gaming adoption, market size, or console decline.

The practical proposition is narrower: Netflix sees room for gaming on the same screen people use to watch its shows, with a phone serving as a convenient controller. Whether that model suits a particular player depends on details such as local availability, compatible hardware, the games offered, and how the experience compares with console play. The available announcements do not support a current, exhaustive comparison with consoles or other cloud-gaming services.
