AI is drawing people who once had little reason to think about storage into data-infrastructure decisions. NetApp says these newer buyers are asking how to activate data for AI—and the company is positioning its newly announced Novus architecture as one answer for large GPU environments. The “sleeping giant” label is NetApp CMO Gabie Boko’s characterization, not an independently measured verdict on the market.
Why AI is changing who asks about data infrastructure
As companies build AI systems, infrastructure decisions increasingly involve more than where data is stored. Teams also need to consider how data is made available to compute, how it is governed, and whether the architecture can keep pace with large GPU environments. That brings data leaders and other buyers into discussions that may once have been handled mainly by infrastructure specialists.
“It’s not that storage or data infrastructure is cool again,” Boko said in an interview at NetApp INSIGHT. “It is that they are asking the questions to say, ‘I need to activate my data.’ Who is going to be the best to do that?” SiliconANGLE reported the interview on October 1, 2026.

What NetApp’s “sleeping giant” claim means
“I believe that NetApp is, for some people, a sleeping giant,” Boko said. The wording is her view of NetApp’s opportunity as AI brings new buyers to data infrastructure, not an objective measure of the company’s size, growth, or competitive standing.
Boko also said net-new website traffic rose “about 50% year over year” after keynote announcements, with many visitors holding data-focused titles such as chief data officer. SiliconANGLE attributes that figure to Boko, but its article does not give a measurement period beyond year over year, a denominator, an analytics method, or independent corroboration. It is a company-reported website-traffic signal, not evidence of a 50% increase in sales, pipeline, or overall storage-market demand. SiliconANGLE disclosed that theCUBE Research was a paid media partner for NetApp INSIGHT and said the sponsor had no editorial control.

What Novus is designed to do
NetApp announced Novus on September 29, 2026, describing it as an architecture for AI infrastructure providers operating large GPU environments. In NetApp’s design, metadata management and the data path are separated so performance, capacity, and concurrency can scale independently within a single NFS namespace. The distinction matters to infrastructure buyers because it describes how the system is intended to scale, not a measured result for every deployment.

NetApp says the architecture is orderable today and is designed to exceed 100 TB/s of aggregate throughput. Both the throughput figure and claims about GPU utilization, including the phrase “fastest storage on the planet,” are vendor claims or design targets; the announcement is not an independent benchmark or comparative test. NetApp’s Novus announcement also says GPU utilization under traditional architectures can fall below 30% when systems cannot deliver data fast enough. The release does not cite a study or provide benchmark methodology for that assertion, so it should not be read as an established industry-wide rate.
How Novus fits into NetApp’s broader AI offer
NetApp and Supermicro announced a strategic collaboration on the same date. Their description combines Supermicro rack-scale compute, networking, power, and liquid cooling with the NetApp Platform. The announcement identifies qualified Supermicro servers and AFF A90 systems in the initial Novus setup; it separately describes NetApp AIPod with Supermicro as a validated converged-infrastructure architecture for enterprise AI. These are descriptions of the vendors’ offerings, not evidence of customer outcomes. NetApp’s collaboration announcement provides the details.
NetApp’s broader platform positioning focuses on production AI, data governance, and operational control. The company says its AI Data Services supports in-place, zero-copy data activation across ONTAP, StorageGRID, and non-NetApp storage. That is a stated capability and positioning claim; the announcement does not establish how it performs in a particular customer environment. NetApp’s platform overview describes the company’s approach.

What infrastructure buyers can assess
Novus’s announcement offers a design description, not the information needed to rank it against competing systems or forecast savings. Buyers evaluating architectures for AI workloads can use several concrete questions to compare proposals:
- Scaling: Can metadata management and the data path scale independently, or must they scale together?
- Performance evidence: Are throughput and GPU-feeding figures design targets, vendor benchmarks, or results from an independently documented production deployment?
- Namespace: Can workloads use one namespace, or will data be split across systems with separate access paths?
- Existing data and governance: How does the architecture connect to current storage, data controls, and hybrid-cloud operations?
- Deployment and expansion: Which components are required, and can capacity and performance be expanded separately?
The announcements provide no named customer deployment outcome, public price, or independently measured production performance for Novus. They also do not provide a balanced comparison with named alternatives. NetApp’s event page lists INSIGHT 2026 as taking place September 29–October 1 in Las Vegas. NetApp INSIGHT 2026.
