Choose Nespresso Vertuo if you want its capsule-based espresso and larger coffee formats; choose Keurig if you prefer K-Cup coffee and want the option of ground coffee on a compatible brewer. The systems use different pods, and the right choice depends on the exact machine, drinks, prices, and recycling options available where you live.
How the two coffee pod systems differ
Nespresso Vertuo machines use Vertuo capsules, while Keurig brewers use K-Cup pods. They are separate systems, so a Vertuo capsule will not work in a Keurig, and a K-Cup will not work in a Vertuo machine. Keurig also has other formats, including K-Mug and K-Carafe, but they are supported only by designated models.
Vertuo’s barcode-reading technology adjusts brewing settings to the capsule, according to Nespresso’s US explanation of Vertuo technology. That design makes capsule compatibility central to the system. Keurig’s model-specific compatibility information is available through its brewer feature comparison and pod and accessory support page.

Nespresso Vertuo: espresso and larger coffee formats
Vertuo is the clearer fit if you want Nespresso espresso capsules as well as larger coffee servings. For example, Nespresso’s US listing for the Vertuo Matte Black machine specifies espresso at 1.35 oz, double espresso at 2.7 oz, gran lungo at 5 oz, and coffee at 8 oz. These are specifications for that listed machine, not a guarantee that every Vertuo model offers the same sizes.

Nespresso’s broader US range includes machine-dependent coffee formats and features, including options for hot or iced preparation. Check the specifications for the specific model you are considering in the US Vertuo range.
Keurig: K-Cup brews with model-dependent options
Keurig’s listed brewers vary in brew sizes and pod compatibility. Some machines are designed for K-Cups, while designated Plus Series models also support K-Mug or K-Carafe formats. Consult the Keurig feature comparison and confirm compatibility for the exact model; features shown for one brewer should not be assumed to apply to all Keurig machines.

How to compare pods, coffee choice, and ground coffee
Start with the coffee you actually buy: check whether your preferred varieties are sold in the machine’s compatible format, then verify that format against the brewer’s model documentation. Vertuo requires Vertuo capsules. Keurig’s K-Cup ecosystem may suit you better if your preferred coffee is available as a compatible K-Cup.
Certain Keurig brewers also support the My K-Cup reusable filter, which lets you brew ground coffee. Keurig lists compatible models on its support page. This is not universal across Keurig machines. The Nespresso pages cited here do not establish an equivalent official refillable Vertuo filter, so do not assume the same ground-coffee option exists for Vertuo.

How to compare the ongoing cost
There is no supported, like-for-like cost-per-serving winner in the available manufacturer product and support information. Prices and selections vary by market, seller, coffee choice, and promotion, so a general claim that one system is always cheaper would be misleading.
- Check the current price of the machine you would actually buy in your market.
- Price the compatible capsules or pods you expect to drink, rather than comparing unrelated varieties.
- Estimate your usual number of servings per day and compare the recurring coffee cost over the period that matters to you.
- If you are considering a compatible Keurig model with My K-Cup, account for how often you would use ground coffee instead of pods.
What to know about recycling in your location
Keurig says its K-Cup pods are recyclable, but advises customers to check local facility acceptance or use its K-Cycle program. - Choose Vertuo if you want its espresso and larger coffee formats, and are content to buy Vertuo capsules. Check the size and features of the specific machine, since they vary across the range.
- Choose Keurig if your preferred coffee is available as a compatible K-Cup, or if you want to use ground coffee with My K-Cup on a supported brewer. Verify the exact brewer’s pod and accessory compatibility.
