An avalanche buried the Himlung Himal base camp in Nepal on September 27, 2026. By October 2, rescuers had recovered 15 bodies, while one expedition worker remained missing. Recovery efforts were temporarily concluded because of continuing mountain hazards, according to the Associated Press.
How many people died in the Nepal avalanche?
As of Reuters’ October 1 report, rescuers had recovered 15 bodies: eight that day and seven earlier in the week. One worker remained missing. The Associated Press reported on October 2 that recovery efforts had been temporarily concluded, with one person still missing. The latest reports cited here therefore establish 15 recovered victims and one missing worker, not a final accounting of everyone at the site.
The count changed as the search progressed. The Associated Press’s September 27 report gave an early toll of two dead and 12 missing. That was an initial count, not the later recovery total.
Where and when did the avalanche happen?
The avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre peak in Manang district in north-central Nepal. It happened on Sunday, September 27, during severe weather, according to the Associated Press.

Who were the victims?
The people at the camp were Nepali expedition workers, guides and support staff preparing the route and base camp for the autumn climbing season and foreign clients. Foreign climbers had not yet reached the site when the avalanche struck, Reuters reported on October 1.
The Kathmandu Post reported on September 28 that a 14-member rescue team had reached the base camp. It also said more than two dozen Nepali high-altitude workers and guides had travelled from Kathmandu to prepare the route and camp.

Are people still missing, and is the search over?
One worker was still missing in the Associated Press’s October 2 report. Recovery work had been temporarily concluded because of continuing mountain hazards; the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association said further efforts might be possible when conditions allowed.
Reuters reported on October 1 that the bodies recovered that day were expected to be transported by helicopter to Kathmandu, citing association president Tul Singh Gurung. That report described an expected transport at the time, not confirmation of its later completion.
