Ferrite magnets are generally more economical and resist corrosion, but usually need more volume for comparable magnetic output and can chip or crack. The right choice depends on the specific magnet’s dimensions and shape, required force or field, operating temperature, environment, and total system cost—not just its material name.
Which is stronger: neodymium or ferrite?
For magnetic output relative to size, neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) is generally stronger. Arnold Magnetic Technologies says ferrite’s energy product is typically about 10% of that of rare-earth magnets. That is a broad material-level comparison, not a promise that every small neodymium magnet will outperform every larger ferrite magnet in every arrangement.
“Strength” can refer to different properties. Residual induction (Br) describes magnetic flux density and is one useful material measure; maximum energy product (BHmax) indicates how much magnetic energy a material can provide. Arnold notes that Br relates to the force needed to remove a magnet from a steel block, while BHmax is useful in calculating motor performance and is proportional to Br squared. Neither number alone predicts a particular magnet’s pull force.
Actual force or field depends on the magnet’s geometry and dimensions, the air gap, contact surface, target steel, and the surrounding magnetic circuit. A vendor’s pull-force figure applies to its product and test arrangement; it is not a general rating for all magnets of that material.

How do neodymium and ferrite compare?
| Decision factor | Neodymium (NdFeB) | Ferrite (hard ferrite or ceramic) |
|---|---|---|
| Output for size | High magnetic energy for a compact size; useful when space or weight is limited. | Lower energy product; may require more volume for comparable output. |
| Cost | Compare material cost with any system-size or weight savings. | Generally economical and widely used in cost-sensitive applications. |
| Temperature | Temperature-sensitive; the usable limit depends on grade and design. | Output changes with temperature. Arnold reports a 25% flux-output loss from 20°C to 150°C. |
| Corrosion | Can corrode; a protective coating is recommended in humid environments. | Highly corrosion-resistant, according to Amazing Magnets. |
| Mechanical handling | Protective coatings can be damaged; follow product handling and mounting requirements. | Hard but brittle, with a risk of chipping or cracking. |
Which magnet is cheaper?
Ferrite is generally the lower-cost material, which helps explain its use in many cost-sensitive designs. There is no supported universal price ratio between ferrite and neodymium magnets: current prices depend on the product and purchase terms, and the sources do not establish matched retail prices.
Compare current quotes for magnets with equivalent dimensions, shape, quantity, coating, and delivery location. Then consider the whole design. A compact neodymium magnet may reduce the space or weight required elsewhere in a device, while ferrite may suit a design that can accommodate a larger magnet. Material price alone does not determine total system cost.

Where does each type work best?
Good candidates for ferrite
Consider ferrite when cost matters, the design has room for a larger magnet, and its temperature and mechanical limits fit the application. Arnold lists ferrite in automotive blower, window-lift, and windshield-wiper motors; magnetic separators; lawnmower, garden-tractor, and outboard-motor magnetos; brushless DC motors; and latches or clamps.
Good candidates for neodymium
Consider NdFeB when high magnetic output in a compact space is important and the design can manage its grade-specific temperature limits and corrosion protection. Arnold lists neodymium in hard disk drives, speakers and headphones, microphone assemblies, magnetic separators, brushless DC motors, variable-speed motors, and servo motors.

- 【Stronger Magnetic Force】Compared with individual NdFeB countersunk magnets, cup magnets have the advantage of being smaller in size and stronger in magnetic force, the magnetic force is 5 times stronger than normal rare earth magnets.Per strong magnet can up to 150 pound holding power.
- 【Nice Design】The round countersunk hole magnet cup design increases the beauty of the product, the steel shell concentrates the strong magnetic force on one side only, the other three sides are almost non-magnetic, well greatly increase the holding power.
- 【Sturable】Neodymium magnets are very brittle, and the steel shell protects magnets so that strong magnets are not easily broken. The magnetic force is permanent and the service life is super long.
- 【Wide Application】Due to its excellent performance, strong cup magnets are widely used in home or industry, such as clips in automation equipment, door closers, tool holders, fixtures, providing magnetic base mounting for lamps, clocks, machines, mirrors and so on. Heavy duty also comes with 6 stainless steel screws to increase the range of product usage.
- 【Precautions】As the neodymium magnet is very fragile and strong magnetic, when you use it you must remove it in a flat position, and after removing it, it is forbidden to collide it with other metal objects (including another magnet) to avoid injury! We are a magnet supplier with professional strength. You can certainly find strong cup magnets with holes you want in my shop!
These are examples, not exclusive application lists. Either material may fit a use case if its specific performance and environmental requirements are met.
How should you compare magnets for a project?
- Define the job. Specify the required holding force, field, or motor performance, and identify the target material.
- Describe the geometry. Record the available space, magnet shape and dimensions, working gap, contact surface, and magnetic circuit. Compare complete magnet or assembly specifications rather than material names alone.
- Set the operating conditions. Account for normal and peak temperatures, moisture or other corrosion exposure, and expected impacts or handling.
- Compare specific grades. Check the manufacturer’s data sheet for the relevant properties and use limits. Arnold’s current NdFeB grade table lists different Br, coercivity, energy product, and maximum use temperatures across grades. Its representative N35 entry gives a typical maximum energy product of 283 kJ/m³ (35 MGOe), typical Br of 1210 mT, and maximum use temperature of 80°C. These figures apply to that listed grade, not to neodymium magnets as a whole.
- Verify application performance. If pull force matters, use a figure tied to the exact product and test setup, or have the manufacturer validate the design. Do not treat a vendor’s rating as a material-wide comparison.
- Compare total cost. Request quotes on equivalent product and delivery terms, then include any effect on the size, weight, protection, and assembly of the finished device.
What should you know about temperature and durability?
Temperature can change magnetic output, and the effect depends on material and grade. Arnold’s comparison reports that ferrite flux output falls 25% when heated from 20°C to 150°C. Its technical note gives an approximate ferrite induction temperature coefficient of -0.2%/°C. Treat these as Arnold’s stated material guidance, not as a substitute for the data sheet for a specific product.

NdFeB is also temperature-sensitive. Its allowable use temperature varies by grade and design, so check the exact grade’s data sheet rather than applying one limit to all neodymium magnets. Arnold’s grade table illustrates this variation; the N35 figure above is not a universal neodymium limit.
Ferrite’s resistance to corrosion can be useful where exposure is a concern, but its brittleness makes impact and mounting important. Neodymium needs suitable corrosion protection in humid conditions; protect both the magnet and any coating during handling and assembly. In either case, account for the whole assembly and expected service conditions.

When should you ask a magnet manufacturer?
Get grade-level curves and application advice for high-temperature or specialized designs, or when a specific force or field must be met reliably. The available comparisons do not establish a universal temperature crossover at which ferrite always becomes preferable to neodymium; the answer depends on the grade, geometry, operating conditions, and magnetic circuit.
