Need for Speed: Underground is a 2003 street-racing game, not a standalone drag-racing title. Its drag events are straight-line races built around precise gear shifts and lane changes, with traffic and obstacles appearing on later tracks.

How drag racing works in Need for Speed: Underground

Drag races trade the cornering and route navigation of other event types for two linked tasks: shifting at the right moment and choosing a clear lane. GameSpot’s 2003 review describes an RPM meter and shift indicators to guide gear changes. Later drag tracks add traffic and obstacles, so lane control becomes part of the challenge.

That makes drag a distinct event within the game rather than its entire premise. The other listed events include circuit, sprint, drift, lap knockout and tournament races. In career mode, races reward cash and help unlock cars and parts; style points contribute to progression too. GameSpot’s preview says those points can come from powerslides, drafting, well-timed shifts, shortcuts, near misses, jumps and race position.

What the game is—and when it released

Electronic Arts announced Need for Speed: Underground on April 30, 2003, presenting it as an urban street-racing game with licensed cars and aftermarket modifications earned through event wins. The announcement’s promotional description highlighted perfecting each event, including the “perfect shift” in drag racing (EA announcement reproduced by The Auto Channel).

Need for Speed Underground (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

GameSpot’s profile lists November 17, 2003 as the game’s first release date. That is the profile’s general date, not a complete release schedule for every region and platform. Its listed platforms are arcade, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox (GameSpot game profile).

Why customization matters

The game pairs street-racing events with two kinds of car customization. Visual options covered body kits, rims, paint, decals, vinyl, spoilers and hoods. Performance upgrades included turbocharging, engine improvements, weight reduction, braking, computer tuning and nitrous. Contemporary coverage says visual changes could affect reputation and style-point rewards; performance parts were unlocked through career progression.

Need for Speed Underground
  • Take on 20 racing machines from Mitsubishi Motors, Subaru, Toyota and many more
  • Build the ultimate street machine by earning cash to pay for body kits and performance mods
  • Hundreds of ways to customize your ride. Pick from major aftermarket parts manufacturers
  • Over 100 unique events give racers the opportunity to earn cash, buy more upgrades, and unlock cars and tracks while increasing their street reputation
  • Racing events including - Drag Racing - Explode off of the line with three other racers, on the brink of control, as you race for the finish line. Street Racing - Heat up the cold city streets with some high octane and high speed racing.

This customization supports the game’s identity as a tuner-car street racer, while drag racing gives players a place to apply upgrades and practice shift timing. The review described the handling as accessible rather than simulation-focused.

How the editions differ

The listed releases span home systems, handhelds, PC and arcade. The available sources do not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison for every edition, so platform-specific features should not be assumed to be identical.

Version or platform group What the sources establish
PC and PlayStation 2 GameSpot’s 2003 preview and review described online play, including cross-platform competition at the time.
Console versions GameSpot’s review described split-screen play. It does not provide a complete feature matrix for every console.
Arcade A separate Global VR system manual documents a dedicated cabinet with force-feedback steering, surround sound and a six-speed shifter. Those cabinet controls are not evidence that home editions used the same setup.
Game Boy Advance, GameCube and Xbox Listed in GameSpot’s profile; the cited sources do not establish a full comparison of their individual features.

Online play is a historical feature description, not confirmation that those services remain available. For the dedicated arcade implementation, the cabinet documentation is the relevant source: Global VR / Electronic Arts system manual, revision B, January 20, 2006.

What one 2003 review thought

Jeff Gerstmann’s GameSpot review, published November 17, 2003, rated the game 7.9 (“Good”). He praised its accessible handling, presentation, sound and car customization, but criticized reused road sections and a career that could become tedious. The review reported more than 20 track layouts and 111 career races; those are counts for the game as reviewed, not measures of sales or broad critical consensus (GameSpot review).
