For a KML file, Gaia GPS (Android or iOS) and OsmAnd are the best-documented options here. Gaia imports KML tracks, routes, and waypoints; OsmAnd imports KML/KMZ and converts them to GPX. No current standalone GPS model with verified direct KML import is established by the sources below, so check a device’s exact manual before buying.

Which GPS apps open KML files?

Both Gaia GPS and OsmAnd document KML import, but they handle the file differently. Choose based on what the KML contains and whether you want it kept in its original format or converted for use in the app.

Option KML behavior Limits and caveats Best suited to
Gaia GPS for Android Imports KML and GPX through the app or by opening a file from email or cloud storage. The Android help page does not state an import-size limit; do not assume the iOS limit applies. People who already use Gaia or want a documented phone-based import workflow.
Gaia GPS for iOS Imports KML containing tracks, routes, and waypoints. Some KML content, including map data, is incompatible with the ordinary import flow. Mobile imports are limited to 15 MB. People with a route, track, or waypoint file within the stated limit.
Gaia GPS website and sync Imports KML, GPX, KMZ, GeoJSON, and FIT files, then can sync saved data to the app. Limit of 1,000 features per file; associated photos in KMZ are not imported. Desktop preparation or importing files before syncing to a phone.
OsmAnd on Android or iOS Imports KML/KMZ for tracks, routes, and favorites, converting KML/KMZ to GPX. The converted GPX may not retain every source-specific detail; inspect the result. People who want KML/KMZ brought into OsmAnd’s track workflow.
Standalone GPS No named current model with verified direct KML import is established by the cited official documentation. Support depends on the specific model and import process. Buy only after confirming the exact model’s manual says how it handles your KML content.

What kind of information is in your KML?

KML is a container for geographic data, not a guarantee that every app will display every kind of content. A file containing a route, track, or waypoints is different from one containing map-like layers or other custom content.

  • For Gaia: its iOS import instructions explicitly cover tracks, routes, and waypoints, and warn that some KML data types such as map data are incompatible.
  • For OsmAnd: KML and KMZ are imported as tracks and converted to GPX. Review the imported track to make sure the information you need survived conversion.
  • If you have a GPX version: Gaia recommends using it when it contains the same data, because many KML files lack speed and time information that may be present in GPX.

How to import a KML file into Gaia GPS

Android

  1. Open Gaia GPS and go to Saved.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu and choose Import File, then select the KML file. Alternatively, open the file from email, Dropbox, or Google Drive and choose Gaia GPS when prompted.
  3. Check the imported item in your saved data.

Gaia’s Android instructions document KML/GPX import but do not give the same explicit file-size limit as its iOS instructions. See Gaia’s Android import guide.

Will a standalone GPS read a KML file?

It may, but the sources cited here do not verify a specific current standalone model with direct KML import. Do not infer KML compatibility from a device’s GPX support or from the fact that its companion phone app can convert files. Before purchasing, check the exact model manual for the supported file types, supported KML elements, and whether conversion is required.

What to check if the import fails

  • Confirm the file’s contents: determine whether it contains tracks, routes, or waypoints, rather than map data or another unsupported layer.
  • Check file constraints: Gaia iOS imports are limited to 15 MB; Gaia’s website allows up to 1,000 features per file. The Android help page does not state a comparable size limit.
  • Try GPX if available: Gaia recommends GPX when it contains the same data, since many KML files lack speed/time information.
  • Inspect conversions: OsmAnd converts KML/KMZ to GPX, so verify the resulting track rather than assuming every detail carried over.
