National brought Geode processor technology; Jungo brought residential-gateway software intended to help equipment makers develop products more quickly.
What did National Semiconductor and Jungo announce?
On November 9, 2001, EE Times reported that National Semiconductor was joining forces with Jungo Software Technologies to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) develop residential gateways quickly. The report framed the offer as a bundle of a Geode chip and Jungo software.
The objective was to give OEMs a starting point that combined computing hardware with gateway software, potentially reducing the integration work needed to bring a product to market. The coverage establishes that development goal; it does not quantify any time or cost savings.
What did each company contribute?
| Company | Contribution | Role in the platform |
|---|---|---|
| National Semiconductor | Geode processor and platform technology | Embedded computing capability for gateway and other information-appliance designs |
| Jungo Software Technologies | Residential-gateway software | Networking software intended to run with the underlying processor and hardware |
Jungo described OpenRG as “a complete residential gateway software solution running on various CPUs and hardware platforms.” That description points to software designed for more than one hardware configuration; it does not identify a particular OpenRG version, feature list, or Geode-specific implementation.

Was this a router product or an OEM development platform?
It was presented as an OEM development platform integration, not as a named, finished consumer router. The intended customers were manufacturers developing residential gateways, rather than households buying a National Semiconductor– or Jungo-branded device.
The distinction matters: a processor and software bundle can support a manufacturer’s product development without becoming a retail product itself. The cited coverage does not establish a jointly branded router, retail price, consumer purchase channel, or currently available bundle.

How did Geode fit into National’s product strategy?
Residential gateways were one target among several for National’s Geode GX2 family. EDN reported that National aimed GX2 at Web pads, residential gateways, thin-client systems, and set-top boxes. It also reported that the first GX2 was built on a 0.15-micron process, sampled in 2001, and was planned for volume availability in the first half of 2002. Those details describe the broader processor family, not necessarily a specific gateway built with Jungo software.

In 2003, EE Times reported that AMD had signed a letter of intent to acquire National Semiconductor’s Geode product line and support silicon. The report described the line as a family of thin-client x86 processors and supporting silicon. A letter of intent marks an announced acquisition step; the cited material alone does not document later product availability or the long-term status of Jungo’s software.
