NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (Webb), together with retired Spitzer Space Telescope observations, has helped astronomers interpret the dusty aftermath of collisions around young stars. In a sample of 21 extreme debris disks, silica-rich dust points to especially energetic impacts between Mars-sized bodies, while silica-poor dust suggests less intense collisions between Moon-sized bodies. These impacts are inferred from the debris; the telescopes did not observe the collisions themselves.

What Webb examined

As young planetary systems develop, their gas-rich planet-forming disks give way to gas-poor debris disks. Extreme debris disks are a rare subclass with unusually abundant warm dust close to the star, in a region comparable to where rocky planets orbit in our solar system. Based on observations collected so far, NASA estimates that about 1% of young stars show observable signs of this phase; that is an estimate, not a complete census. NASA’s October 1, 2026 overview describes the systems and the study.

The compiled sample contains 21 disks: five drawn from Spitzer archival data and 16 observed with Webb. Of the Webb observations, 12 were newly observed disks and four were follow-up observations of disks already in the Spitzer set. NASA’s summary graphic identifies eight silica-rich disks and 13 silica-poor disks. These are counts in the studied sample, not universal proportions of collision types. NASA’s composition graphic shows the categories.

Mid-infrared spectra from Webb and Spitzer revealed three recurring features: relatively small dust grains, a high concentration of warm dust, and irregular changes in infrared brightness. Webb’s spectra also helped identify the dust composition, which the team used to infer the character of the collisions that produced it. ESA/Webb’s account provides a complementary summary.

What silica suggests about the collisions

The two categories differ in silica content, inferred impact scale, stellar ages, and brightness behavior. The impactor sizes and energies are interpretations of the debris evidence, not direct measurements of bodies caught colliding.

Disk group Sample count Collision interpretation Observed age and brightness pattern
Silica-rich Eight Suggests high-energy impacts between Mars-sized bodies, with a substantial portion of material vaporized. All examples in this sample orbit stars younger than 300 million years. The cited releases do not identify a contrasting variability pattern for this group.
Silica-poor 13 Suggests less intense collisions between Moon-sized bodies, including grazing impacts. Found across a broader range of stellar ages and often shows greater infrared brightness variability.

The age and variability patterns are findings for these observed systems. They should not be read as a census of all extreme debris disks or as proof that every disk in either category follows the same history.

Why silica-poor disks may vary more

The researchers propose that changes in orbits and additional impacts can rapidly reshape fresh debris, contributing to the stronger brightness variations seen often among silica-poor disks. This is an explanation under consideration, not a settled account of every brightness change. The observations establish irregular variation; they do not directly show the orbital shifts or individual collisions producing it.

What the findings may say about our solar system

The disk observations offer comparisons for thinking about the early solar system, but they do not reconstruct its history directly. NASA estimates that Earth and the Moon formed around 100 million years after the Sun formed, and the Moon likely formed after a collision between Earth and a Mars-sized object. That is a separate inference about our system, not an event observed in the Webb sample.

NASA notes that older silica-poor disks could be broadly consistent with a connection to the Late Heavy Bombardment if their brightness changes reflect orbital instability. The connection is conditional, and only three disks in the sample meet the older-age criterion relevant to that hypothesis. Konkoly Observatory coauthor Attila Moor emphasized the limits: “Of course, there’s many things we still don’t know about these disks.” More observations of older systems would help test the idea.

What Webb adds—and what remains uncertain

The study brings together enough systems to compare dust compositions and look for patterns that were difficult to establish from isolated examples. Lead author Kate Su, an astronomer at the Space Science Institute, said: “This is the first time we have gathered enough systems to truly understand this subclass that we call extreme debris disks.” Coauthor Agnes Kospal described seeing Webb’s mid-infrared emission and spectral features as especially exciting because they made it possible to identify the compositions.

The practical takeaway is that infrared observations can reveal the makeup of dust and help scientists infer the scale of past impacts. They cannot, by themselves, turn those interpretations into direct observations of colliding planets. The reported group sizes, age patterns, and variability describe a selected sample; the NASA and ESA releases do not establish that the same proportions apply across all young planetary systems.
