It did not create a ready-to-launch rescue fleet or guarantee that everyone aboard the International Space Station could leave immediately. In June 2026, NASA directed five astronauts to shelter in the docked Dragon while Russia assessed a leak in the station’s Zvezda module; the crew later resumed normal operations.
What happened at the ISS in June 2026?
Cracks in the PrK transfer tunnel of the station’s Russian Zvezda service module had caused small atmospheric leaks since 2019. During Progress 95 cargo operations in the week of June 1, 2026, Roscosmos measured the leak rate at two pounds of air per day and identified additional suspected leak areas, according to NASA’s June 5 update.
While Roscosmos considered a structural repair, NASA directed the four SpaceX Crew-12 astronauts and NASA astronaut Chris Williams, who had arrived aboard Soyuz MS-28, to use the docked Dragon as a “safe haven.” Roscosmos paused repair work for further measurements, and the five returned to normal station operations. NASA’s update documents a temporary sheltering measure, not a completed permanent repair or a full-station evacuation.
Why did the earlier Soyuz leak change evacuation planning?
The planning work followed a different incident: a coolant leak on a docked Soyuz in December 2022. NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) reported in 2024 that the damaged spacecraft was considered potentially unsafe for crew return. NASA, SpaceX, and Roscosmos arranged another Soyuz for the affected crew; the damaged vehicle returned to Earth without a crew in March 2023.

The affected astronauts remained on the station until September 2023. Their mission lasted more than a year rather than approximately six months. NASA subsequently developed contingency instructions covering Soyuz return and where the crew should shelter during an emergency, according to the OIG. The 2022 coolant leak prompted the planning work; the June 2026 event involved suspected leaks in the ISS structure itself.
What does Crew Dragon’s emergency configuration allow?
After the Soyuz incident, the ISS Program, NASA Commercial Crew Program, and SpaceX analyzed how Dragon seating could be used in a similar emergency. NASA OIG reported that they approved an emergency return configuration for five people—one more than the four astronauts in the standard Crew-12 group mentioned in NASA’s June 2026 update.

The additional place is not equivalent to a standard crew seat. The fifth occupant would not have the same helmet, life-support connections, or seat restraints as the other four, leaving that person at greater risk if the cabin depressurized. The approval describes a contingency configuration, not a promise that Dragon can safely carry any five people in every emergency.
Can Dragon evacuate everyone aboard the station?
That depends on how many people are aboard and which return vehicles remain usable. The approved five-person Dragon arrangement can add an emergency return place, but it does not by itself solve every loss-of-vehicle scenario. NASA OIG noted that if a Soyuz incident removed transport for three people, two remaining astronauts would still lack accommodations for an imminent evacuation.

Why is there no instant rescue spacecraft?
NASA OIG says NASA and its partners do not keep emergency crew vehicles ready to launch. Maintaining such vehicles is cost-prohibitive, and a spacecraft would need additional certification time before use. If existing crew vehicles were damaged or inoperable, a full evacuation would require preparing and launching an empty vehicle, docking it with the ISS, and making it ready for the crew. The report gives no availability deadline, so an immediate departure cannot be assumed.
Other spacecraft in the normal flight schedule, including private-astronaut missions and a future Boeing Starliner once certified, may add options. They are not a dedicated rescue fleet held ready for instant use.

What remains uncertain about the Zvezda leak?
NASA’s June 5, 2026 update said Roscosmos had paused repair work to collect more measurements and that NASA would continue working with Russia and the other station partners to assess and resolve the issue. That update does not establish that a permanent structural fix was completed. It also does not describe a new evacuation architecture beyond the safe-haven action and the contingency planning previously reported by the OIG.
