Named Data Networking (NDN) asks the network for named data rather than directing a request to a particular host. A consumer sends an Interest for a name; matching Data can return from a producer or an intermediate cache. The design also puts a signature on Data so a consumer can check its authenticity and provenance. That does not make the content private: confidentiality generally remains an application-layer responsibility.

What is Named Data Networking?

Named Data Networking is a specific information-centric networking (ICN) architecture. In the broader ICN research direction, the idea is to make information or content—not just an endpoint—the thing the network identifies and retrieves. NDN is one approach to that idea; it is not another name for every ICN system. The IRTF’s RFC 8793 describes terminology used by both NDN and the distinct CCNx architecture.

In conventional IP networking, packets are forwarded using network addresses that identify endpoints or interfaces. An application typically needs to locate a server or other endpoint to obtain data. NDN instead lets an application request a named piece of data without specifying which host must provide it. This is intended to separate retrieval from a particular source location; it does not mean that names are universal, self-explanatory, or independent of application design. The NDN project explains the architecture in its motivation and architecture overview.

How does an NDN request work?

NDN uses a receiver-driven exchange. A consumer requests data with an Interest packet, and Data matching that Interest travels back toward the requester. The Interest establishes the state routers need to return the response.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  1. The consumer names the requested data. It sends an Interest containing a name, rather than addressing the request to a particular server.
  2. Routers check for a match. A router uses its name-based forwarding information to decide where to forward the Interest. If an appropriate Data packet is already in its Content Store, it may satisfy the request there.
  3. Routers record the request path. When forwarding an Interest, a router records the incoming interface in a Pending Interest Table (PIT). If more than one downstream request asks for the same name, the router may aggregate them and forward a single upstream Interest while retaining the requesters’ interfaces.
  4. Matching Data returns along that path. When Data arrives, routers use the PIT state to forward it to the interfaces from which the Interest came, then remove the pending state. A router may also keep a copy in its Content Store for later requests.
  5. The consumer checks the Data. A Data packet carries its name, content, and producer signature. The consumer can validate the signature according to its trust rules.

These mechanisms let the network reuse cached data and avoid sending duplicate upstream requests in some circumstances. They are architectural capabilities, not a guarantee that every request will be faster or use less bandwidth: the result depends on factors such as whether a useful copy is cached and how the network is configured. The packet exchange and router state are described by the NDN architecture overview.

How are NDN names chosen?

NDN names are commonly hierarchical, and an application can define conventions for versions, segments, and other components. For example, an application might give an immutable file version a stable name and request its pieces as separately named segments. The network forwards based on name components, but generally does not interpret their application-specific meaning. There is no single naming scheme that every NDN application must use; applications choose names and conventions suited to their data and retrieval needs.

Stable names can help identify immutable content and make cached copies reusable. If content changes, an application can publish it under a new versioned name rather than treating different content as the same item. The NDN project discusses naming and versioning in its FAQ and architecture overview.

How is NDN different from IP?

The central difference is what the network uses to identify a request: IP forwarding is address-oriented, while NDN forwarding is name-oriented and built around Interest/Data exchanges. The comparison below describes architectural emphasis, not a claim that IP networks cannot use caches, replication, or security mechanisms.

Question IP networking NDN
What does the network identify? Network addresses associated with endpoints or interfaces. The requested data name; a request need not identify one required source host.
How does a response find its way back? Packets are routed using addresses; applications commonly obtain data through communication with an endpoint. An Interest creates pending state in routers, and matching Data returns over the recorded path.
Can intermediate nodes reuse data? Caching can be added at particular network layers or services; it is not the defining IP packet exchange. Routers can cache Data and may aggregate Interests for the same name as part of the architecture.
What does security attach to? Protection is commonly associated with hosts, connections, or channels, depending on the protocols used. Data signatures support checks of content authenticity and provenance; confidentiality is generally left to the application.
What does the comparison establish? These are different architectural approaches. The cited sources do not provide an apples-to-apples performance benchmark or a current deployment comparison.

NDN’s name-based forwarding and Interest state are specified as architectural mechanisms, not proof that NDN outperforms IP for every workload. The IRTF terminology document and the NDN project overview describe the distinction without establishing a universal speed or adoption ranking.

Does NDN make data private?

No. A signature and encryption solve different problems. A signature can help a receiver determine whether Data is authentic and whether it came from a source trusted under the receiver’s policy. It does not conceal the content from routers, caches, or other parties that can access the packet.

The NDN design describes Data signatures as mandatory and as binding the name and data to support provenance and trust decisions. In practice, meaningful validation still depends on trust policies and key management. Access control and encryption are also needed when an application must restrict who can obtain or read content.

RFC 8793 states: “ICN architectures like NDN and CCNx generally do not provide data confidentiality, which is treated in these architectures as an application-layer concern.” The RFC is an informational 2020 document, not an Internet Standards Track specification. The NDN project’s 2018 security overview discusses security mechanisms, including authenticity and confidentiality, but those mechanisms do not remove application responsibilities for trust, keys, access control, and any required encryption.

Where is NDN intended to be used, and how mature is it?

The NDN design principles name a range of environments the architecture is intended to support. These are design targets and research applications, not evidence that NDN is routinely deployed in each setting.

  • Conventional infrastructure-based communication
  • Internet of Things (IoT) systems
  • Wireless mesh networks
  • Vehicle-to-vehicle networking
  • Disrupted or intermittent links, including first-responder environments
  • Unidirectional satellite links

The NDN project overview describes evaluation through end-to-end testbeds, simulation, and theoretical analysis, alongside work on specifications and prototype implementations. It records the project’s launch with National Science Foundation funding in September 2010. That date is project history, not a measure of present-day adoption. The sources cited here do not establish a current deployment census or show that NDN has replaced IP.
