Choose a Naim Uniti all-in-one if you want streaming, a DAC and power amplification in one compact, app-controlled chassis. Choose separate components if you want to upgrade each stage independently, add specialist sources, mix brands or install substantially more amplifier power. The right answer depends less on a universal sound-quality ranking than on your speakers, room, sources, space and willingness to manage a multi-box system.

What you are actually choosing

“All-in-one” and “separates” describe two different system architectures. A Uniti Atom, Uniti Star or Uniti Nova combines a network streamer, digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), preamplifier functions and stereo power amplification in one enclosure. You add passive loudspeakers and the necessary speaker cable, then control music through the system’s software and app.

A separates system assigns those jobs to individual boxes. A typical chain is streamer or digital transport → DAC → preamplifier → power amplifier → speakers. You might combine a network streamer with a separate DAC, use a dedicated phono stage for a turntable, or choose a power amplifier sized for difficult speakers. Each box can be replaced without discarding the rest of the system, but you take on more cables, configuration and matching decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither architecture is automatically “better.” An all-in-one generally wins on installation, footprint and predictable integration. Separates generally win on expansion, independent upgrades, source flexibility and the ability to select more output power. The best choice is the one that solves your actual listening and installation constraints.

What every current Uniti all-in-one includes

Naim’s current compatibility guidance classifies the Uniti Atom, Uniti Star and Uniti Nova as all-in-one products. All three provide Ethernet and Wi‑Fi networking, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, UPnP playback and internet radio. Uniti products can also synchronize playback in a multiroom system. These capabilities mean that a single chassis can handle local network libraries, major streaming services and ordinary casting without an external streamer.

Each of the three models has an integrated DAC. That is different from the Uniti Core, which is a music server without a DAC; a Core therefore needs a downstream DAC-equipped product before it can feed an amplifier or speakers. Do not treat a Uniti Core as an all-in-one replacement for an Atom, Star or Nova.

The Uniti units do not include passive loudspeakers. Your system budget must include speakers, stands or suitable furniture, speaker cable and any digital or analogue interconnects required by your sources. The electronics may be one box, but the complete playback system is not.

Uniti Atom, Star, Nova and Nova PE compared

The following figures are from the January 2026 Latham Audio/Naim price list unless a different source is identified. Prices are listed euros and should be treated as time- and region-sensitive rather than permanent global pricing.

Model Published stereo output January 2026 price Minimum speaker impedance Recommended speaker sensitivity CD playback and ripping
Uniti Atom 2 × 40 W €2,599 4 ohms At least 88 dB No built-in optical drive function in the cited compatibility table
Uniti Star 2 × 70 W €3,999 4 ohms At least 86 dB Plays CDs and rips them to an external USB drive in WAV or FLAC
Uniti Nova 2 × 80 W €4,999 4 ohms At least 85 dB No built-in optical drive function in the cited compatibility table
Uniti Nova PE 2 × 150 W €9,999 Not stated in the cited price entry Not stated No CD/ripping function identified in the cited material

“At least” sensitivity figures are Naim’s model guidance, not a guarantee that every speaker with that rating will be an ideal match. Speaker impedance can fall below its nominal value at some frequencies, room size affects required volume, and listening distance changes how much headroom you need. Use the figures as a screening check, then confirm the specific speaker’s electrical load with the manufacturer or dealer.

Uniti Atom: the compact entry point

The Atom’s published 2 × 40 W output is the lowest in the Uniti range. That makes the 4-ohm minimum and 88 dB-or-higher sensitivity guidance especially important when selecting speakers. It is a sensible fit for a compact installation, a smaller room and efficient loudspeakers when you value the smallest serious Naim system over maximum headroom.

Because streaming, conversion and amplification are already integrated, an Atom can be installed with very few decisions: choose compatible speakers, connect a network or Wi‑Fi, sign into services and select music. Its limitation is not a missing streaming feature; it is the finite output and the fact that a future change to the DAC or amplifier means replacing the main unit rather than swapping one stage.

Uniti Star: the CD and ripping specialist

The original Star is the Uniti model for physical-disc owners. Naim says it can play CDs and rip them to an external USB drive in WAV or FLAC. That turns a disc collection into files that can be played over the network while retaining the convenience of a single integrated system.

The Star is rated at 2 × 70 W, with Naim’s guidance of at least 86 dB speaker sensitivity and a 4-ohm minimum impedance. It therefore offers more published output than the Atom while preserving the same network-service platform.

Availability needs special attention. A current What Hi‑Fi? report describes the original Star as discontinued because of CD-drive supply problems and identifies the Uniti Star Lite as its streaming-only successor in the UK and Europe. The Star Lite retains 70 W per channel and supports AirPlay 2, Google Cast, TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify Connect and UPnP, but removes the integrated CD player and ripper. The reported launch price was £3,199 in the UK and €3,999 in Europe. Stock and model names can vary by country, so verify the exact unit and its drive before ordering.

Uniti Nova: more headroom in one box

The Nova’s 2 × 80 W rating is double the Atom’s published output and higher than the Star’s. Naim lists a minimum speaker impedance of 4 ohms and recommends speakers rated at least 85 dB sensitivity. That makes the Nova the safer all-in-one starting point when a room is larger, listening levels are higher or the chosen speakers need more amplifier headroom than an Atom comfortably provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“More power” does not make a Nova universally superior. If your speakers are efficient and your room is small, the Atom may already provide the volume you need. The Nova’s value is the additional margin and the ability to keep the system to one main electronics chassis while moving to a more demanding speaker or room.

Uniti Nova PE: premium output without a separates rack

The January 2026 list records the Nova PE at 2 × 150 W and €9,999. That is the high-output premium all-in-one option in the listed range. The price approaches the territory where a buyer should compare a one-box installation with a carefully chosen streamer, DAC, preamp and power amplifier stack. A Nova PE can preserve the simplicity of a single control centre, but its integrated architecture still means replacing the unit if a future upgrade targets only one internal stage.

How all-in-one and separates differ in daily use

Decision axis Uniti all-in-one Separate components
Installation One electronics chassis, fewer interconnects and fewer matching decisions Several boxes, cables, power connections and configuration choices
Upgrade path A major change to the streamer, DAC or amplifier may require replacing the whole unit Replace the streamer, DAC, preamp or power amp independently
Amplifier choice Output is fixed by the Uniti model: 40, 70, 80 or 150 W per channel in the listed models Select an amplifier sized for the room and the speaker’s electrical load
Sources Strong network playback and digital inputs; the Star adds integrated CD playback and ripping Easier to add a specialist phono stage, CD transport, external DAC or extra analogue source
Space and appearance Compact, clean installation with simple cable management Needs rack space, ventilation planning and more visible cabling
Initial budgeting Clear electronics price, but speakers and accessories remain extra Costs accumulate across every component; speakers and accessories remain extra

When a Uniti all-in-one is the better system

You want music playing quickly

With the streaming platform, DAC and amplifier already selected to work together, setup is mostly a matter of speaker connection, network access and service sign-in. There is no need to decide whether a particular streamer output suits a particular DAC, whether a preamp has enough inputs or whether gain and cable choices are sensible across four boxes.

Your room and speakers fit the power guidance

Start with the speaker’s nominal impedance and sensitivity. Naim’s stated minimum is 4 ohms for Atom, Star and Nova; its recommended sensitivity is at least 88 dB for Atom, 86 dB for Star and 85 dB for Nova. A speaker below those guidelines is not automatically unusable, but it deserves confirmation rather than an assumption that the amplifier will be comfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You value a tidy installation

A Uniti chassis reduces shelf space, interconnect length and visible wiring. That matters in a living room, office or shared space where a full rack is impractical. It also reduces the number of remote controls and software interfaces you must maintain.

You prefer a known, finite purchase

An all-in-one makes the electronics portion of the decision easier to price. You can compare the Atom, Star, Nova and Nova PE directly, then add the speakers and installation accessories. The trade-off is that a later desire for a different DAC character, more inputs or a stronger amplifier is likely to lead to a larger replacement rather than a small incremental purchase.

When separates are the better system

You expect staged upgrades

Separates let you improve one limitation at a time. You could begin with a streamer and integrated amplifier, add a dedicated DAC later, replace the power amplifier when you move to harder-to-drive speakers, or change the preamplifier without abandoning your library and network source. This avoids paying for another complete streamer every time the amplification stage becomes the bottleneck.

You need sources beyond network streaming

A separate system is easier to tailor around a turntable, external phono stage, CD transport, broadcast tuner, professional interface or several analogue devices. The Uniti range provides digital and analogue connections in differing quantities across models, but a separates rack gives you more freedom to choose the exact input type and number at each stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your speakers demand more power or unusual matching

The listed Uniti outputs top out at 2 × 150 W for Nova PE. A separate power amplifier can be selected for a particular speaker’s impedance curve, sensitivity, room and listening distance. That is useful when the speaker is inefficient, the room is large, or you want substantial volume headroom without replacing an otherwise satisfactory streamer and DAC.

You want to mix manufacturers

Separates do not require every stage to come from one product family. You can keep a preferred network platform while choosing another brand’s DAC, preamp or power amplifier, provided the electrical connections and operating levels are compatible. Mixing also gives you more second-hand and future replacement options, although it increases the responsibility for checking gain, outputs, inputs, grounding and control integration.

What a Naim separates system costs

The January 2026 price list illustrates why separates need a larger budget conversation. It lists the NSS 333 streamer/DAC at €9,499, the NSC 222 streaming preamplifier at €6,999 and the NAP 250 power amplifier at €6,999. Those three electronics prices alone total €23,497 before speakers, speaker cable, rack furniture, optional power supplies and other accessories. They are examples of individually priced components, not a claim that every separates system must cost that amount.

A separates budget should therefore be built from the functions you actually need. If a streamer already includes a capable DAC, adding another DAC may be unnecessary. If your source is exclusively network audio, a preamplifier with many analogue inputs may provide little benefit. Conversely, a turntable, CD transport and power-hungry speakers can justify the extra boxes because each addresses a real requirement.

  • Analogue equipment: include a turntable, phono stage, tape deck or line-level source and count the required analogue inputs.
  • USB libraries: decide whether you need direct USB storage playback or, in the Star’s case, a USB drive destination for WAV or FLAC rips.
  • Network services: confirm that your preferred service is among Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, UPnP or internet radio support.

Atom, Star and Nova support these categories in different quantities and configurations. Check the model-specific connection panel before purchase; “supported” does not mean that every model has the same number of ports.

Step-by-step buying process

  1. Write down the room and listening position. Note approximate room size, listening distance and the loudest level you realistically use. This determines how much amplifier headroom matters.
  2. Shortlist speakers first. Record each speaker’s nominal impedance and sensitivity, then compare them with the 4-ohm minimum and model-specific sensitivity guidance: 88 dB for Atom, 86 dB for Star and 85 dB for Nova.
  3. Separate essential sources from optional sources. If CD playback and ripping are central, the original Star is the relevant Uniti design. If streaming is all you need, Star Lite may be the applicable UK/Europe variant, subject to local availability.
  4. Count every connection. Include HDMI ARC, optical, coaxial, analogue and USB requirements, plus Ethernet or Wi‑Fi coverage where the system will be installed.
  5. Choose the upgrade strategy. Select an all-in-one when simplicity and a stable system matter more than changing individual stages. Select separates when you already know which stage you will upgrade or which specialist source you need.
  6. Price the complete system. Add speakers, stands, cable, rack space, optional power supplies and any required digital interconnects. Do not compare an electronics-only price with a complete separates quotation.
  7. Verify regional stock and current pricing. The euro figures are from January 2026, while the Star Lite prices reported by What Hi‑Fi? apply to the UK and Europe. Confirm the exact model name, warranty region and included accessories with the seller.
  8. Arrange a speaker-specific audition or return option. Published wattage and sensitivity are screening tools; listening comfort, tonal balance and room interaction still depend on the actual speaker and room.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming more watts always means better sound

Output power is only one part of system matching. A sensitive 8-ohm speaker in a small room may need little power, while a nominally similar speaker with difficult impedance behavior may need much more current. Use the published ratings to avoid obvious mismatches, then consider the complete speaker specification and your listening distance.

Buying a Star without confirming the drive

The original Star’s CD player and ripping function are its defining hardware difference. Star Lite removes both. Product names and availability are changing because of regional supply, so confirm that the unit in the listing has the optical drive before paying.

Budgeting only for the electronics

None of the listed Uniti products includes passive speakers. Stands, cable and source interconnects can also affect installation cost. A compact electronics chassis does not eliminate those parts of the system.

Confusing Uniti Core with an all-in-one player

A Uniti Core stores and serves music but does not contain a DAC. It cannot replace an Atom, Star or Nova by itself; it needs a DAC-equipped downstream device.

Counting on a future internal upgrade

An all-in-one’s integration is its convenience and its boundary. You can add sources around it, but replacing only the internal DAC or amplifier is not the same as swapping a component in a separates stack. If independent upgrades are central to your plan, begin with separates.

Decision guide by buyer type

Your priority Most suitable direction Reason
Small footprint and app-controlled streaming Uniti Atom Integrated streamer, DAC and 2 × 40 W amplification in the smallest listed power class; pair with speakers meeting its guidance.
CD playback and disc ripping Original Uniti Star Built-in CD player and ripping to an external USB drive in WAV or FLAC; verify availability and hardware.
Streaming-only system with Star-level output in UK/Europe Uniti Star Lite 70 W per channel and current streaming support, but no CD drive or ripper; regional model availability applies.
One-box system for a larger room or less-sensitive speakers Uniti Nova 2 × 80 W and guidance down to 85 dB sensitivity, offering more published headroom than Atom.
Maximum listed Uniti output Uniti Nova PE 2 × 150 W in the January 2026 list, with a €9,999 listed price; compare carefully with separates at this budget.
Specialist phono, CD transport or staged upgrades Separates Individual source, conversion, preamp and power stages can be selected and replaced independently.
Mixing brands or selecting a custom power amplifier Separates More freedom to match each stage to your sources, speakers and future plans.

Bottom line: simplicity or independence

The Uniti Atom, Star, Nova and Nova PE are complete digital front ends and stereo amplifiers that reduce a serious hi-fi system to one main electronics box. Atom suits efficient speakers and compact rooms; Star is the choice when integrated CD playback and ripping matter; Nova adds output headroom; and Nova PE is the high-power premium option listed for 2026. All require separate passive speakers and careful impedance and sensitivity matching.

Separates are the stronger long-term platform when you need a specialist source, substantially different amplifier power, mixed manufacturers or a deliberate upgrade plan. They cost more in equipment, space and setup effort, but you can change one stage without replacing the others. Decide first whether your priority is a finished, compact system or an expandable system architecture, then choose the Uniti model or component combination that meets the real requirement.
