One route is TagTagTag, a replacement electronics board that fits Nabaztag and Nabaztag:tag shells and works with a Raspberry Pi Zero W and microSD card. It restores the rabbit’s lights, sound and moving ears while adding sensors and modern computing. The original Violet service is closed, but community-run alternatives offer another way to restore core behaviors without replacing the hardware.
What TagTagTag changes inside the rabbit
Nabaztag was a Wi-Fi-connected rabbit created by Olivier Mével and Rafi Haladjian and launched by Violet in June 2005. Speech, sounds, lights and moving ears let it deliver ambient information and messages. Violet’s official service later closed, leaving owners to rely on community projects or retrofit hardware to keep the devices useful. Raspberry Pi’s project article describes TagTagTag as a replacement board for Nabaztag and Nabaztag:tag shells, paired with a Raspberry Pi Zero W. Multiplié reports that the project has tutorials, schematics and source code available.
The board’s documented components include five RGB LEDs, two MEMS microphones, an audio codec and amplifier, an LIS3DH accelerometer, and a Si7021-A20 temperature and humidity sensor. That combination is intended to bring back expressive output while making room for newer sensing and processing.
What you need
- A compatible original Nabaztag or Nabaztag:tag rabbit.
- A TagTagTag replacement board.
- A Raspberry Pi Zero W.
- A microSD card.
The retrofit involves opening the rabbit and installing replacement electronics. The Raspberry Pi article describes project capabilities including weather information, local speech recognition and “ear-based Tai Chi”; these are project descriptions, not independent performance test results.

- M2 Key-M NVMe SSD Supported: Support M.2 KEY-M NVMe SSD 2230/2242/2260/2280 length installation; Comes with SSD copper pillar for 2230/2242/2260 SSD installation
- User Manual and FAQ: Google Geekworm WiKi and search X1001 and its FAQ; Refer to the FAQ to do troubleshoot step by step if can't boot/recognize from NVMe SSD
- Designed as a basic PCIe expansion board for the Raspberry Pi 5, the X1001 features limited standalone hardware functionality and requires proper OS configuration, stable FFC cable connection, and compatibility between firmware and SSDs for reliable operation.
- Power Supply Requirements: The X1001 is powered directly through the PCIe FFC ribbon cable. For stable operation, use the Raspberry Pi 5 PD 27W USB-C Power Supply (5.1V/5A). Note: Standard phone chargers may not provide sufficient power for NVMe SSDs, which can result in SSD instability, data corruption or drive failure.
What the crowdfunding history does—and does not—tell you
Multiplié reports 150,000 Nabaztag units sold worldwide and says TagTagTag received crowdfunding in 2019 and 2021. Adafruit’s 2021 account likewise describes a kit replacing the original electronics with a new board paired with a Raspberry Pi, and says hardware and software were open source and kits were available through Ulule. These records establish the project’s crowdfunding history, not present-day inventory or delivery availability. Adafruit’s 2021 summary is useful historical context; check the project’s own current channels before relying on a board being available to buy.
Can Nabaztag still work after Violet’s servers shut down?
Yes, but it depends on the route you choose. The original official service is no longer available; community alternatives provide replacement services. The nabaztag.org portal reports that its service supports speech, ear movement, five LEDs, RFID reactions, sleep and wake routines, radio playback and conversational interactions. Those are capabilities reported by that community project, not continuing Violet services. See the nabaztag.org community portal.

- GPIO status LED: LED on if GPIO outputs / inputs high level, LED off if GPIO outputs / inputs low level
- Independent LED: The status LED is driven by the chip instead of the GPIO so the GPIO will not be affected

- Pin name: The BCM numbering name of each pin is printed next to it
TagTagTag retrofit or community service?
These approaches solve different problems. A retrofit changes the electronics and adds a Raspberry Pi; a community service aims to restore behaviors using the existing rabbit hardware. Choose based on whether you want a hardware project or primarily want the original interactions working again.
| What to compare | TagTagTag retrofit | Community alternative service |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware work | Open the rabbit and install the replacement board, Raspberry Pi Zero W and microSD card. Raspberry Pi | Designed to revive behaviors without the TagTagTag electronics replacement. nabaztag.org |
| What it adds or restores | Modern computing plus documented sensors and project-described features such as weather, local speech recognition and ear-based Tai Chi. Raspberry Pi | Community-reported speech, ears, LEDs, RFID, sleep/wake, radio and conversational behavior. nabaztag.org |
| Availability evidence | Crowdfunding campaigns in 2019 and 2021 are documented; current stock is not established. Multiplié | The portal describes an alternative service; hardware compatibility and current service details should be checked with the project. nabaztag.org |
How to choose a revival route
- Choose TagTagTag if you are comfortable opening the rabbit and want to replace its electronics with a Pi-powered board.
- Check the community service first if your priority is restoring speech, ears, lights or other supported behaviors without a hardware retrofit.
- Verify project status before spending: historical crowdfunding coverage does not confirm that boards are currently in stock, that campaigns are still delivering, or that a service supports every rabbit revision.
Violet’s archive captured the original ambition with the line, “Nabaztag is the first of a new species.” Violet archive. The revival projects extend that idea in different ways: one replaces the rabbit’s electronics, while community servers focus on restoring its connected behaviors.
