A coordinated premade squad is usually the fastest way to finish loud, combat-heavy MW4 DMZ Orders. For stealth, looting, printer materials, and personal objectives, however, playing alone with Squad Fill off can be faster than joining random teammates who pursue different missions. There is no published timed trial comparing minutes per Order or Order page for solo players and trios, so the useful answer is to match your team size to the objective rather than assume one mode always wins.

Orders are the three-item pages in your Forward Operating Base (FOB), while Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Side Ops are tracked differently on the squad HUD. That distinction explains why a quiet solo run can beat random fill for your own progression, even though a premade trio clears a defended compound or boss much faster.

Random Squad Fill Players without a regular team who need help surviving fights Two allied players are added automatically; goals and communication are unpredictable PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 Oct 2026

Can you play MW4 DMZ solo, and how do you turn Squad Fill off?

Yes. At the Deploy or Ready Up flow, choose Story Mission, Dynamic Operation, or Free Roam, select your infil, then toggle Squad Fill off in the bottom-left of the operator and inventory screen. Polygon’s Ford James describes the control as a small bottom-left toggle; the console inputs reported by Insider Gaming are L2 on PlayStation and LB on Xbox.

  1. Open the DMZ deployment screen from the FOB.
  2. Choose the deployment type that matches your objective.
  3. Select an infil point or vehicle.
  4. On the Ready Up/operator screen, switch Squad Fill off.
  5. Confirm deployment and check the tracked objective before leaving the aircraft or spawn area.

Squad Fill on adds two allied players, creating a three-person squad. Activision’s FOB guide says, “Squad Fill automatically drops you into your deployment with two other allied players. This is recommended if you don’t have a squad of friends to deploy with.” A party of two that turns fill off deploys as a duo.

There is no dedicated solo playlist. Infinity Ward said matchmaking is built in “the direction of putting solos with solos, duos with duos, and trios with trios,” with “no guarantee.” A Hajin match can contain up to 20 squads or 60 players — Infinity Ward, 2026 (9 October AMA, reported 12 October). Other human squads can therefore encounter you regardless of your fill setting.

The “Single Squad Mission” menu shown in a trailer was a developer testing playlist, not a public PvE-only mode. Assimilation is limited: Geoff Smith, Infinity Ward’s multiplayer creative director, said, “We do allow assimilation, but only one player on your team, so just four.”

What are DMZ Orders, and why are they different from missions?

DMZ Orders are the personal progression list in the FOB. Activision defines them as “your guiding Mission Directives in DMZ. These assist with getting you onboarded, telling the story of DMZ and challenging you to master the exclusion zone.” Open the DMZ Orders station in the FOB to see pages of three objectives, their rewards, and any requirements that must be completed in a deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Completing a page pays its reward after all three Orders are done. DMZMap’s launch catalog, updated 27 October 2026 for the 23 October launch build, lists 66 Orders found so far, arranged in pages of three. Page numbers can differ between accounts, so identify a page by the names of its three Orders rather than relying only on its number.

What does the first Order page require?

  1. Gear Up: equip a weapon, backpack, armor vest, and Medkit from your Stash in the FOB. No deployment drop is required.
  2. Crackshot: knock down three targets on the FOB firing range.
  3. First Op: deploy in Dynamic Ops.

DMZMap lists Page 1 rewards as 20,000 DMZ Cash, a Medkit, and a 2-Plate Armor Vest. Gear Up and Crackshot are hub tasks, so a squad adds no speed; First Op is simply a deployment requirement.

Which Orders are completed by Story Missions?

Six Orders are credited by finishing a named Story Mission, according to DMZMap: Operation Critical Extraction (Human Intel 2/2), Operation Silent Ledger (Counterfeit 2/2), Operation Shopping Hacks (Underground 2/2), Operation Grid Assault (The Grid 2/2), Operation Iron Citadel (Hornet’s Nest 2/2), and Operation Fallen Ember on a later page.

Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Side Ops appear on the squad HUD, while Orders are shown separately. Activision advises: “Check your Story Mission with you and your squadmates’ current DMZ Orders, as they may have objectives you can complete simultaneously.” That is an invitation to plan overlaps, not proof that every teammate’s kill, pickup, or exfil automatically credits every personal Order.

Is solo or a premade squad faster for completing Orders?

The fastest choice depends on the objective. Solo gives complete control over which Order you advance and avoids detours; a premade trio supplies more damage, angles, revives, and carrying capacity when the Order requires fighting through a compound. Random fill sits between them for survival but can be the slowest route to your own page when teammates pursue unrelated goals.

Axis Solo Premade squad Random Squad Fill
Control of Orders Full control of your list Shared by agreement Weak; teammates choose their own goals
Combat and compound speed Slowest Fastest Fast only if they fight with you
Stealth and Threat control Best Loud and more likely to attract third parties Unpredictable
Loot All yours Split among friends Split among strangers
Recovery after a down Tourniquet or Self-Revive Teammate revive plus the same tools Teammate revive only if they stay and can reach you
Order tracking Your list only Overlap is possible if planned Often mismatched
Wipe cost High: MIA and unsecured loot loss Lower because revives can prevent elimination Lower during a coordinated fight, but a teammate leaving can waste the deployment

Activision’s broad design position is explicit: “How you approach each deployment, within a squad or acting alone, is entirely up to you.” The practical speed test is not raw damage alone; it is objective alignment multiplied by the chance that the operator survives and extracts.

Which Orders are faster or equal when you play solo?

Solo is usually equal or faster when the Order is a hub task, a stealth sequence, a personal interaction, or a controlled loot route. A squad cannot print your recipe or complete your FOB firing-range task for you, and extra gunfire can make stealth objectives harder.

FOB and crafting Orders

  • Gear Up and Crackshot are completed in the FOB.
  • Preparation and the “Printing Orders” recipe objectives require your own Stash, printer, or recipe interaction, so teammates add no direct progress speed.

Stealth and low-profile Orders

Work Quietly asks you to gunsmith a suppressor, print a throwing knife, and kill eight enemies in a row without taking damage. A quiet solo route avoids a teammate’s unsuppressed shots and reduces the chance that a group fight raises Threat before the streak is complete.

Activision’s Stealth Meter gives solo players an early warning when AI is close to spotting them: the HUD indicator moves from white to yellow to orange and an audio cue plays. The official deep dive says the system “assists Solo players particularly well, as it helps you control combat when facing AI enemies.” Geoff Smith described it more bluntly: “That whole stealth system is 100% for solo players.” On suppressors, he said, “the star system just kind of really ignores you.”

Loot, clinic, tower, and printer routes

  • Triage Protocol: bandage and collect 30 Chemicals from a clinic.
  • Execute Intel: use a UAV tower in Deadtown.
  • Hunter: climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower and use its terminal; the Order is about the interaction, not necessarily killing the Lieutenant.
  • Free Roam ingredients: gather materials for 3D Printer recipes at your own pace.

Activision calls Free Roam an excellent choice when your focus is looting for 3D Printer ingredients and working personal objectives. Low-threat starting areas named in Activision’s location ratings include Deadtown streets, Imjin Farmland, Cheongun Village, Mirae General Hospital, and Songdo Wharf.

Which Orders are faster with a coordinated squad?

Bring a premade trio when the objective requires sustained damage, multiple simultaneous angles, or recovery from a down. AI does not have documented squad-size scaling: the same patrols, Threat levels, and Hunt Squads apply. The squad is faster because it brings more guns and revives, not because enemies become weaker.

Compound and boss objectives

  • No One Left: clear a defended compound; save it for a geared run even if you normally play solo.
  • Lieutenant, Commander, and Goliath/Colossus Orders: high- or Extreme-Threat locations such as 14th Political Prison, Heavenly Luck Casino, the Haneul reactor, The Grid, and Chang-san Air Base are substantially safer with coordinated coverage.
  • Jail Break: the 14th Political Prison objective benefits from several operators controlling entrances and reviving downed teammates.
  • Operation Iron Citadel: the locked Chang-san armory is a poor place to learn solo pacing.

Story-Mission and Dynamic-Operation Orders

The six Story-Mission-linked Orders are valid solo targets—Activision says Story Missions are “Built for squads and solo players with replayability in mind”—but pushing their high-threat spaces is slower and less forgiving alone. DMZTracker and launch coverage note areas guarded by two Commanders at once, a situation where a trio can divide targets while one player completes an interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Hunt Operators Dynamic Op sends you after a full rival squad. Treat that as a premade-squad objective; solo attempts trade the numerical disadvantage of the target team for the loss of your own revive network.

Why can random Squad Fill be slower than playing alone?

Random fill improves your chance of surviving an unexpected fight, but it does not guarantee progress on your Order page. A teammate may want PvP, a different Story Mission, a hot point of interest, or an early exfil while you need a clinic, printer, or tower. The result is movement and combat that consume the deployment without advancing your objective.

COD Central’s launch guidance says random fill rarely delivers the coordination of a talking squad. Use it when your priority is learning the map, surviving difficult encounters, or accepting whatever the group chooses—not when you need a specific personal Order completed in the fewest deployments.

Before loading in, compare the three players’ tracked Story Missions and Orders. If there is no overlap, turn Squad Fill off or find a premade group through a community LFG channel or the official Call of Duty Discord pointer. Do not assume that the HUD’s “shared missions” label means every separately displayed Order is shared.

Which deployment type should you choose for an Order run?

Choose the deployment that matches the wording of the objective. The wrong mode can add a mission detour even when your squad is strong.

Story Missions

Select Story Missions when the Order literally names an Operation, such as Operation Critical Extraction or Operation Iron Citadel. Matchmaking aims to group squads pursuing the same Story Mission, although Infinity Ward does not guarantee an exact lobby composition.

Dynamic Operations

Dynamic Operations place you directly into a current operation for DMZ Cash and experience. Only one operation can be active at a time; cancel it from the Tac Map before starting another. Deploy-card rewards were listed at $10,000–20,000 DMZ Cash, while early runs recorded about $5,000–10,500; the two figures conflict, so treat the lower observations as early-access reports rather than a fixed official payout table.

Free Roam

Free Roam deploys you without a mission into Hajin City and its surroundings. It is the default for mixed personal Orders, Side Ops such as UAV and Hunt towers, stealth streaks, and printer-material routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do AI, Threat, stealth, and revives change your speed?

Threat is attached to a location, ranges from Low to Extreme, rises as you fight, and does not count human operators. AI kills fill the Hostiles Kill Count and can trigger a Hunt Squad. Activision recommends melee attacks, throwing knives, and suppressed shots in high-threat areas.

A premade trio can clear the same patrol group quickly, hold separate angles, and revive a downed player. A solo operator must break line of sight, spend a Self-Revive, or rely on a Tourniquet. These systems improve survival but do not increase raw solo damage.

Tourniquet and self-recovery

Tourniquet is always available as a fallback self-up. Infinity Ward’s AMA explanation says it leaves you Wounded at 100 maximum health instead of the normal 150. Only a Medkit fully repairs the wound and re-arms the Tourniquet; bandages, stims, and painkillers are temporary. If you go down again while still wounded, the Tourniquet does not trigger a second time.

Self-Revive Kits occupy a separate loadout slot. Solo-friendly Survivalist traits named in launch coverage include Possum, which self-revives into Last Stand once per match, Free Revive, and Die Hard. Carry a Medkit and a Self-Revive when a solo Order enters a High- or Extreme-Threat zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when a solo run fails?

A killed operator becomes MIA. Rescue costs DMZ Cash, and the amount rises with Trait Points. Rescue preserves Traits but loses the operator’s gear; unsecured backpack loot is also lost, while Secure Slots survive. DMZ XP still counts: Activision states there are “no XP penalties for dying during a match.”

Whether every Order requires a successful exfil is not published as a universal rule. Read the exact in-game objective text instead of assuming that a completed interaction always survives an elimination. Cash from an operation is described as wiring to the FOB wallet, while picked-up cash banks on exfil.

Active Duty capacity matters when calculating Orders per hour. You begin with two Active Duty slots, receive three with the Vault Edition, and gain another at DMZ progression level 15. Keeping a survival-focused operator and a cheaper backup reduces the time between a wipe and your next attempt. The Medium Backpack recipe—50 Synthetics and 5 Rigid Synthetics—provides the early backpack with Secure Slots; Basic and Small backpacks have none.

How can you reduce solo downtime at exfil?

Exfil is often the largest solo time sink after the objective is complete. Activision warns that squads use the green-smoke Twin Heli exfil as an ambush point, and the flares are extremely loud and visible from great distances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Clear nearby buildings before calling the exfil rather than fighting while the flare is active.
  2. Watch the Tac Map for approaching squads and Hunt Squad pressure.
  3. Use a less exposed exfil when the objective allows it.
  4. Use a Fulton when its marker is available and the value of the backpack justifies the resource.
  5. Leave immediately after the extraction countdown finishes; do not stay to chase unrelated loot.

A failed extraction can cost the operator even when XP was awarded for the completed objective, so survival time belongs in any honest “faster” comparison.

What does deployment cost?

Paid infils do not become free when you disable Squad Fill. Activision’s 9 October 2026 FOB guide lists these launch costs:

Infil costs, checked Oct 2026
Infil method DMZ Cash cost Notes
Ground Free Standard ground deployment
Polaris Dagor A1 5,000 DMZ Cash Vehicle infil
LTV 25,000 DMZ Cash Vehicle infil
Helicopter 50,000 DMZ Cash One player flies
Cargo Plane 100,000 DMZ Cash Choose the landing spot

Extracted Recipes or Weapon Manuals pay 5,000 DMZ Cash, according to Activision. Budget rescue and infil cash before taking a high-Trait operator into an Extreme location.

Which approach should you use for each type of Order?

  1. FOB page 1: complete Gear Up and Crackshot immediately; either solo or squad is equally fast, then deploy for First Op.
  2. Stealth, loot, printer, UAV, and Hunt-tower Orders: use Free Roam with Squad Fill off, a suppressed weapon, the Stealth Meter, and Low-Threat areas first.
  3. No One Left, prison, air-base, Colossus, and named Story-Mission Orders: form a premade trio, agree on the target Order, and assign one player to interactions while the others cover.
  4. Random fill: use it only when you accept the group’s destination and mission. Do not select it solely because three guns look faster on paper.
  5. After a wipe: rescue or switch to the backup Active Duty operator, replace the Medkit and Self-Revive, and avoid immediately repeating the same high-threat route.

How we reached the solo-versus-squad recommendation

The recommendation follows the systems documented for launch: Orders are personal and page-based; Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Side Ops are squad-facing; AI does not have published squad-size scaling; and a trio has extra damage and revives. It does not rely on a timed benchmark—no Activision post, Infinity Ward AMA answer, or launch guide published minutes-per-Order results for solo versus trio play.

MW4 DMZ entered Early Access on 20 October 2026 and fully launched on 23 October 2026. Because the Order list, matchmaking balance, lobby size, and rewards can change after launch, verify the objective wording and reward shown in your current FOB before committing a long run.

Where can you play MW4 DMZ?

DMZ is a mode inside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, not a separate free-to-play download. Activision lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Battle.net, Xbox on PC, and Steam, plus Nintendo Switch 2. Digital pre-order Early Access opened Campaign on 16 October 2026 and DMZ on 20 October 2026; the full game launched on 23 October 2026.

The Vault Edition includes a DMZ Deployment Kit with two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, and two Fulton Drop Markers. Those extras can reduce recovery friction, but they do not change whether a solo or squad clears an Order faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a solo queue or solo playlist in MW4 DMZ?

There is no guaranteed solo-only playlist and no PvE-only public mode. Infinity Ward says matchmaking aims to place solos with solos, duos with duos, and trios with trios, but explicitly gives no guarantee; every deployment can still involve other human squads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do my teammates’ kills complete my personal DMZ Order?

Not automatically. Orders are displayed separately from the squad HUD used for Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Side Ops, and Activision has not published a universal per-objective credit table. Read the exact Order requirement and coordinate overlaps before assuming another player’s action counts.

What should a solo player bring into a high-threat area?

A Medkit and a Self-Revive cover the two most important recovery paths, while a suppressor and throwing knife help keep the Stealth Meter under control. Bank rescue cash first, because an eliminated operator becomes MIA and rescue costs rise with Trait Points.

Does dying erase my DMZ experience?

Activision says there are no XP penalties for dying during a match, so earned DMZ XP remains. Death can still cost unsecured backpack loot, gear on the operator, and the time needed to rescue or replace that operator.
