Murata completed its acquisition of Finnish sensor maker VTI Technologies Oy on January 30, 2012. Nearly four months later, on May 25, the company changed its name to Murata Electronics Oy. The acquisition and the renaming were separate milestones.

When did Murata acquire VTI Technologies?

Murata announced on October 11, 2011, that it had agreed the previous day to acquire all outstanding shares of VTI Technologies Oy. The proposed transaction was subject to applicable approvals and other conditions, and Murata expected it to close within six months. Murata’s October 2011 announcement describes the agreement and proposed terms.

Murata later reported that its wholly owned subsidiary, Murata Electronics Europe B.V., completed the acquisition on January 30, 2012, local time. Murata published the completion announcement on January 31, so the completion date and announcement date differ. Murata’s completion announcement confirms the date and subsidiary.

What was VTI Technologies, and why did Murata buy it?

VTI Technologies Oy was a Finnish company established in 1991 that developed and manufactured silicon-based capacitive sensors using proprietary 3D MEMS technology. Its 2011 announcement listed sensing applications including acceleration, inclination, shock, vibration, angular velocity and pressure, for automotive and medical markets. Murata’s announcement of the agreement provides that company and product description.

Murata said VTI’s MEMS sensors would supplement its product lines and support expansion of its MEMS sensor business. It presented VTI’s automotive and medical focus as complementary to Murata’s stronger presence in consumer applications. These were Murata’s stated reasons for the deal, not independently measured evidence of its later financial or market results. Its 2012 exhibition announcement specifically named acceleration sensors, gyro/accelerometer combination sensors and pressure sensors. Murata’s 2012 exhibition announcement lists those products.

When did VTI become Murata Electronics Oy?

VTI Technologies Oy changed its company name to Murata Electronics Oy on May 25, 2012, and adopted Murata’s visual identity. Murata said the rebrand was intended to make the company’s integration into the group visible and strengthen the Murata brand. Its announcement described the new company’s website as presenting MEMS accelerometers, inclinometers, gyroscopes and sensor elements, or dies. Murata’s May 25, 2012 announcement documents the name change.

Murata President Tsuneo Murata said that day: “Today is a memorable day: VTI Technologies Oy has become Murata Electronics Oy. The change of company name and visual identity clearly and strongly highlights the fact that this company is now an integral part of Murata,” the announcement records.
