As of October 20, 2026, Magic: The Gathering Standard does not rotate during 2026. The next expected rotation is with the first 2027 release, announced as Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. Standard is a two-player, rotating constructed format built around recent sets: use a minimum 60-card main deck, verify that every card’s printing is inside the current Standard window, and check the latest banned-and-restricted announcement before registering.

What Standard is

Standard is Magic’s rotating constructed format for two players. Wizards of the Coast describes it as a format built from the latest sets, with a 60-card-or-larger deck and games that take approximately 20 minutes. Rotation keeps the card pool focused on newer releases, so decks and common strategies change as older sets leave.

“60 cards” is a minimum for the main deck, not a target you must exceed. A larger deck is legal, but drawing key cards becomes less consistent as the deck grows. Competitive lists therefore usually stay close to the minimum unless a specific strategy has a reason to play more.

Standard legality is attached to a card’s printing and set, not simply to its name, artwork, or the fact that it is a Magic card. A card can be familiar from an older release yet be legal in Standard only when the relevant printing is in a currently legal set.

Does Standard rotate in 2026?

No. Wizards’ October 25, 2024 rotation announcement said, “There will be no rotation in 2026 as we gear up for this change.” The change is a three-year Standard model: beginning with the first release of 2027, sets released in 2025, 2026, and 2027 will be legal in the format.

That means players can keep a 2026 Standard deck through the rest of the year without a scheduled annual rotation removing cards. A card can still become unusable if it is banned, if an event applies a special rule, or if you are playing a different format.

The next announced rotation

The October 12, 2026 Banned and Restricted announcement says the next rotation is expected with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm in early 2027. It identifies seven sets that are expected to leave Standard at that time:

Set expected to leave What that means
Wilds of Eldraine Cards from this set are expected to rotate when the first 2027 set releases.
The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Cards from this set are expected to rotate at the same transition.
Murders at Karlov Manor Cards from this set are expected to rotate at the same transition.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction Cards from this set are expected to rotate at the same transition.
The Big Score Cards from this set are expected to rotate at the same transition.
Bloomburrow Cards from this set are expected to rotate at the same transition.
Duskmourn: House of Horror Cards from this set are expected to rotate at the same transition.

The announcement gives the expected timing as early 2027 rather than a specific day. Check the current announcement and event information before submitting a list, because release schedules and tournament registration deadlines can matter.

What is legal in Standard right now?

During the 2026 no-rotation year, the seven sets listed above remain in Standard until the expected early-2027 change. Newer sets released after them may also be legal, provided their set is included in the current Standard window and the card is not banned. The complete legal-set list is time-sensitive, so use the official Standard legality page rather than relying on an old deck list or a retailer’s product label.

One confirmed current product is Reality Fracture, released October 2, 2026. Wizards’ release notes state that cards carrying the FRA set code are permitted in Standard. That is a set-specific confirmation; it does not make every product or every card with a similar name legal.

Why set codes matter

When a card has multiple printings, identify the exact printing and its three-letter (or otherwise displayed) set code. The same card name can appear in sets from different legality periods. The set code gives you a reliable starting point for checking the current window.

How to check whether a card is Standard legal

  1. Identify the printing. Record the card’s set symbol or set code, and confirm which version you intend to register.
  2. Compare the set with the current Standard window. Use the current official legality list. Do not infer legality from the card’s age, color, rarity, or whether it appears in a recent product advertisement.
  3. Check bans and restrictions. Read the latest Banned and Restricted announcement and the current Standard list. On October 12, 2026, Wizards reported “Standard — No changes,” but that status can change later.
  4. Check the event’s registration rules. A store event, qualifier, digital queue, or larger tournament may specify a deck-registration deadline, required deck-list format, or other administrative rule. Confirm those details before submitting.

For unusual interactions and corner cases, Wizards identifies the Comprehensive Rules as the controlling reference. Legality and gameplay rules are separate checks: a card can be legal while an interaction is still governed by a detailed rule or ruling.

Building a Standard deck

Start with the 60-card minimum

Build at least 60 cards in the main deck. Begin by choosing the cards that express your plan, then add enough lands and supporting spells to cast them reliably. Keeping the main deck near 60 cards is a practical recommendation because it improves the chance of drawing the cards your strategy needs; it is not an additional rule beyond the 60-card minimum.

Choose one coherent game plan

Standard decks commonly fall into broad strategic plans. These labels are useful starting points, not official deck classifications:

Plan How it tries to win Questions to test
Aggressive Applies pressure early and turns small advantages into a quick finish. Can the deck deploy threats early, and does the mana support its opening plays?
Midrange Uses efficient threats and flexible answers to win through value. Does each card contribute to pressure, removal, card advantage, or recovery?
Control Trades resources, answers opposing threats, and wins after stabilizing. Are there enough answers for the expected threats, and can the deck finish once it is ahead?
Combo Assembles a specific interaction that produces a decisive advantage. How consistently can the pieces be found, and what happens when an opponent disrupts them?

These are strategic recommendations rather than universal rules. A deck can combine elements, but every added card should support the deck’s primary route to victory. Avoid off-plan cards merely because they are individually powerful; a strong card that cannot be cast on time or does not advance the deck’s plan can reduce the list’s consistency.

Build the mana base around the spells

Count the colored mana requirements of the cards you actually want to cast early. A deck with demanding costs in several colors needs a mana base that can produce those colors on schedule. If the mana frequently enters play too slowly or cannot provide the needed color, reduce the color requirements, adjust the land mix, or change the spell package. Mana reliability is part of the deck’s strategy, not a final detail to fill in after the nonland cards are chosen.

Evaluate more than speed

When comparing two legal builds, examine five practical axes:

  • Speed: how quickly the deck can create a winning advantage.
  • Interaction density: how often it can answer an opponent’s threats or disrupt a plan.
  • Mana reliability: how consistently it casts its spells on the required turns.
  • Resilience: how well it recovers after removal, disruption, or a poor opening hand.
  • Rotation exposure: how much of the plan depends on sets expected to leave in early 2027.

Calling one build “best” without a metagame, event, and pilot context is misleading. A faster deck may punish slow starts, while a resilient deck may perform better in a field prepared for aggression. Treat these comparisons as decision criteria, not guarantees of tournament performance.

Sideboards and event-specific rules

Some Standard events use a sideboard, while casual play may not. The exact sideboard size, registration procedure, and rules for changing cards between games come from the event’s current rules and the applicable tournament documents. Confirm those requirements with the organizer before registering rather than assuming every event uses identical procedures.

If an organizer provides a deck-list template, use the requested card names, set information, and quantities exactly. Resolve discrepancies before the registration deadline; an otherwise legal deck can still be rejected for an incomplete or improperly formatted list.

Can Universes Beyond cards be used in Standard?

Universes Beyond branding does not automatically make a card legal or illegal. The deciding questions are the card’s specific printing, whether that set is inside the current Standard window, and whether the card appears on the current Standard banned list. A crossover card from a Standard-legal set can be used under the same rules as any other card in that set; a crossover card from a set outside the window cannot be added simply because it is new or popular.

Check the set code on the exact printing you own and verify it against the official legality list. If a product contains cards from multiple sets, evaluate each card individually rather than treating the entire product as one legality category.

Reality Fracture boosters: what they do and do not provide

Reality Fracture booster packs are a way to acquire cards from a product whose FRA-coded cards are permitted in Standard. A sealed booster is randomized: opening one does not produce a complete 60-card deck, a guaranteed combination of colors, or a tournament-ready mana base. Players who want a playable list should treat boosters as an uncertain source of cards and then build around the pool they open, trade for missing pieces, or obtain individual cards through legitimate channels.

Before buying or opening packs for an event, confirm that the event allows the product’s cards and that the specific printings you plan to use remain legal on the event date. Standard legality can change with a rotation or a later banned-and-restricted announcement.

Planning for the 2027 rotation

Separate rotating and nonrotating pieces

Mark every card in your list by set. Cards from the seven announced departing sets should be treated as short-term resources if you intend to keep the deck after the first 2027 release. Cards from sets that remain in the three-year window can form the foundation of a longer-lived list, although future announcements can still alter legality.

Test two versions of the deck

One useful approach is to keep the current list for events before rotation while maintaining a second version with replacement cards for the departing pieces. This exposes hidden dependencies: a deck may appear to need only one replacement threat, yet also rely on a rotating removal spell, land, or synergy card.

Recheck after the first 2027 release

Do not treat an expected rotation as final event policy until the official release and legality update are posted. At that point, check the complete Standard list again, remove cards from the seven departing sets, and verify that any newly released cards are legal before registering.

Common legality and construction mistakes

  • Using an old legality list: legality changes with rotations and announcements. Check the current official pages on the day you register.
  • Checking only the card name: verify the exact printing and set code.
  • Assuming a new product is automatically Standard legal: product release date alone is not the test; the set must be in the Standard window.
  • Adding powerful but unrelated cards: off-plan cards can weaken mana, opening hands, and overall consistency.
  • Ignoring rotation exposure: a deck may be legal today but require major rebuilding after the expected early-2027 change.
  • Confusing deck legality with event compliance: registration format, deadlines, and sideboard procedures can be separate requirements.

Practical checklist before submitting a deck

  1. Count the main deck and confirm it contains at least 60 cards.
  2. Record the set code for every card printing in the list.
  3. Compare those sets with the current official Standard legality window.
  4. Read the latest Standard banned-and-restricted announcement; the October 12, 2026 announcement made no changes, but that is a dated status.
  5. Review the event’s deck-list, sideboard, and submission instructions.
  6. Identify cards from Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, The Big Score, Bloomburrow, and Duskmourn: House of Horror if you plan to keep playing after the expected early-2027 rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 60-card deck required, or can I register fewer cards?

For ordinary constructed Standard play, the main deck must contain at least 60 cards. A larger deck is allowed, but staying close to 60 is generally recommended for consistency.

Are all Universes Beyond cards automatically legal in Standard?

No. Check the exact printing’s set code against the current Standard legality list and banned list. The crossover label alone does not determine legality.

Does buying a Reality Fracture booster give me a Standard deck?

No. Boosters are randomized packs. FRA-coded cards are permitted in Standard, but a sealed pack does not guarantee a complete deck or the cards needed for a particular strategy.
