PCI_E1 and PCI_E3 draw lanes from the processor; PCI_E5 connects through the Z590 chipset. With an 11th Gen Intel CPU, the processor-connected slots can operate at up to PCIe 4.0. A 10th Gen CPU limits them to PCIe 3.0. For one graphics or other x16 expansion card, MSI recommends PCI_E1.
MSI MEG Z590 ACE PCIe slot layout
| Slot | Lane source | Documented capability | Important interaction |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCI_E1 | CPU | Up to PCIe 4.0 with an 11th Gen Intel CPU; up to PCIe 3.0 with a 10th Gen CPU | Recommended by MSI for a single x16 expansion card |
| PCI_E3 | CPU | Up to PCIe 4.0 with an 11th Gen Intel CPU; up to PCIe 3.0 with a 10th Gen CPU | Shares the CPU lane configuration with PCI_E1 |
| PCI_E5 | Z590 chipset | PCIe 3.0, x4 physical/electrical slot according to the manual | Installing a card here changes M2_4 from x4 to x2 |
| PCI_E2 and PCI_E4 | Z590 chipset | PCIe 3.0 x1 | Short chipset-connected expansion slots |
The “x16” label in a slot name or specification describes the long connector. It does not prove that the slot always has 16 active lanes or that it uses CPU lanes. Always distinguish the connector’s physical length from its electrical link and its source.
Which PCIe slot should you use?
One graphics card or other x16 device
Install the card in PCI_E1. MSI’s MEG Z590 ACE manual specifically recommends PCI_E1 for a single PCIe x16 expansion card when optimum performance is desired. This slot is directly connected to the CPU and avoids routing that device through the chipset.
Two CPU-connected cards
PCI_E1 and PCI_E3 share the processor’s available PCIe lanes. MSI lists the CPU-slot arrangements as x16/x0/x4, x8/x8/x4, and x8/x4+x4/x4. The first two positions describe the CPU-connected long slots; the third describes PCI_E5’s chipset-side configuration. The negotiated width depends on the cards installed and their lane requirements, so a second card can reduce the first card’s link from x16 to x8.

A chipset expansion card
Use PCI_E5 for devices that can operate through a chipset-connected PCIe 3.0 x4 link. Remember that populating PCI_E5 has a documented storage consequence: M2_4 changes from PCIe 3.0 x4 to x2.
Does the Z590 ACE support PCIe 4.0?
Yes, but only under the conditions MSI specifies. PCI_E1 and PCI_E3 can reach up to PCIe 4.0 when an 11th Gen Intel desktop CPU is installed. With a 10th Gen Intel CPU, those same CPU-connected slots operate at up to PCIe 3.0. PCI_E5 and the short PCI_E2/PCI_E4 slots are chipset-connected PCIe 3.0 slots.
PCIe generations are maximum interface capabilities, not a guarantee that every installed card will negotiate that speed. The CPU generation, the card, firmware, lane allocation and the card’s own electrical limits all affect the link reported by the system.

Why might a GPU show x8 instead of x16?
The most common board-level explanation is that both CPU-connected long slots are populated. The Z590 ACE can allocate the CPU lanes as x8/x8 when cards are installed in PCI_E1 and PCI_E3. A GPU may therefore correctly report an x8 link rather than x16. That result is different from installing a card in PCI_E5, which is a separate chipset-connected link.

- Check the CPU model. An 11th Gen chip enables the board’s PCIe 4.0 CPU links; a 10th Gen chip does not.
- Inspect the negotiated link width and generation in your operating system or firmware while the device is installed and under an appropriate workload.
- Remove or reseat additional cards if you need the single-card x16 arrangement, then verify the link again.
- Consult the MEG Z590 ACE manual for the exact card combination if the reported arrangement does not match MSI’s listed lane modes.
How PCIe slots interact with the M.2 sockets
M2_1: CPU-connected PCIe storage
M2_1 is a CPU-connected Key M socket supporting up to PCIe 4.0 x4, but MSI makes it available only with an 11th Gen Intel CPU. It accepts 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 drive lengths.
M2_2 and M2_3: chipset-connected storage
M2_2 and M2_3 connect to the Z590 chipset and support up to PCIe 3.0 x4. Both accept PCIe NVMe drives and SATA 6Gb/s M.2 drives. Installing an M.2 SATA SSD in M2_2 disables SATA2. Installing either an M.2 SATA or PCIe SSD in M2_3 disables SATA5 and SATA6.

M2_4: chipset PCIe-only storage
M2_4 is a chipset-connected PCIe socket. When a card is inserted in PCI_E5, MSI specifies that M2_4’s bandwidth switches from x4 to x2. This is a direct PCI_E5/M2_4 resource-sharing rule; it should not be attributed to PCI_E1 or PCI_E3.
These M.2 sockets are storage connectors, not alternate names for the board’s long PCIe expansion slots. Their source, supported protocols and CPU requirements differ.
Physical support for a heavy graphics card
MSI advises using a support tool such as its Graphics Card Bolster when a large, heavy graphics card is installed, to help prevent slot deformation. This is installation guidance rather than a claim that every graphics card requires a bracket. Choose a brace that fits the card and the case without obstructing fans or adjacent slots.
Quick Recap
Practical configuration checklist
- For one x16 card, start with PCI_E1.
- Use PCI_E3 when a second CPU-lane card is required, and expect the CPU lanes to be repartitioned according to MSI’s documented modes.
- Use PCI_E5 for a chipset-connected PCIe 3.0 x4 device only after checking whether M2_4 is populated.
- Match PCIe 4.0 expectations to an 11th Gen Intel CPU; a 10th Gen CPU limits CPU-connected slots to PCIe 3.0.
- Check whether your M.2 drives are SATA or PCIe before populating M2_2 or M2_3, because those choices disable specific SATA ports.
- Use the board manual’s lane table when diagnosing a particular multi-card combination; the physical slot labels alone are insufficient.
