Anthony Enzor-DeMeo became Mozilla Corporation’s CEO on December 16, 2025. He says Firefox will remain Mozilla’s anchor while evolving into a modern AI browser. Mozilla’s implementation is designed around opt-in features, model choice, visible controls and privacy-oriented data policies—not mandatory AI for every user.
Who is Mozilla’s new CEO?

Mozilla’s definition is broader than adding a single chatbot. The announced direction combines AI-assisted browsing, optional assistants, model selection and smaller tools such as translation or tab organization. Mozilla’s roadmap and product announcements show that this strategy is moving into named features, although roadmap availability and timing can change.
Will Mozilla force AI into Firefox?
Mozilla says no. Enzor-DeMeo wrote that “AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off.” The company’s AI Window announcement likewise described the experience as “Completely opt-in” and said users could switch it off.
That policy means Firefox can add AI features without making one assistant or one provider mandatory. It also gives users separate decisions: whether to use AI at all, which features to allow, and which model or service handles a request.
What AI features are planned or announced?
The following features are associated with specific Mozilla announcements or the roadmap last updated July 10, 2026:

How can you turn off Firefox AI features?
Firefox 148 was announced for rollout on February 24, 2026, with a new AI controls section in desktop settings. Mozilla says the section lets users either block current and future generative-AI features or manage features individually.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Open Firefox’s desktop settings.
- Go to the AI controls section.
- Choose the option to block generative-AI features, or adjust individual features such as translations, PDF alt text, tab grouping, link previews and the chatbot sidebar.
The control is intended to cover future generative-AI additions as well as features already available, so users do not have to revisit every feature separately when Mozilla adds another one.
Which AI models work in Firefox?
Mozilla’s announced chatbot sidebar supports a choice of providers rather than a single required model. The launch list names:
- Anthropic Claude
- ChatGPT
- Microsoft Copilot
- Google Gemini
- Le Chat Mistral
Availability can depend on the feature, platform, account requirements and Mozilla’s rollout. The important design choice is that Firefox can expose multiple services, allowing users to pick the model or system that fits their preferences.
What is Firefox Smart Window?
Smart Window is Mozilla’s desktop name for the AI browsing experience previously introduced as AI Window. Mozilla describes it as an opt-in window that sits alongside regular Classic Windows and Private Windows. It is intended to provide a dedicated space for asking an AI questions while browsing, rather than silently applying AI to every page or search.
Mozilla has not presented Smart Window as a replacement for normal Firefox windows. Users who do not want the feature can continue using Classic or Private Windows and can block generative-AI features through the desktop AI controls.

On August 18, 2026, Mozilla announced that Exa.ai would help power Smart Window on desktop and Quick Answers on iOS. Mozilla says the integration is intended to deliver current, source-backed answers with visible citations and a zero-data-retention commitment.
Those claims describe the announced product intent, not a guarantee that every answer will be correct. Visible citations are useful because they let users inspect the sources behind an answer, while the stated zero-data-retention policy addresses how Exa says requests should be handled. The exact experience can vary as Smart Window and Quick Answers roll out.
What Mozilla’s AI-browser strategy means for users
Mozilla’s approach can be judged on five practical questions:
- Is it opt-in? Smart Window and the announced AI Window experience are described as optional.
- Can it be disabled centrally? Firefox 148’s desktop AI controls are designed to block current and future generative-AI features.
- Can users choose a provider? The chatbot sidebar names five services rather than imposing one model.
- Are data practices clear? Mozilla says privacy and data use should be understandable; its Exa announcement includes a zero-data-retention commitment for that integration.
- Can answers be checked? Exa-powered Smart Window and Quick Answers are intended to show citations.
Mozilla has not published attributable adoption, revenue, performance or security figures for the AI-browser plan in these announcements. The most concrete evidence so far is the combination of the CEO’s strategy statement, Firefox’s AI-control design, the named feature roadmap and the Exa partnership.
