On April 24, 2001, EDN reported that Motorola had proposed closing its mobile-phone factory in Bathgate, Scotland. The proposal potentially affected all 3,100 employees at the site, but Motorola said it had not made a final decision and was consulting an elected employee forum.
What did Motorola announce about Bathgate?
EDN’s contemporaneous report described a proposed closure, not a completed shutdown. Motorola said the proposal could affect all 3,100 employees at the Bathgate site. The company also said no other Motorola facilities in Scotland or the rest of the UK were affected by the proposal. EDN, April 24, 2001
Why was the factory at risk?
Motorola attributed the proposal to a sharp fall in demand for mobile phones, against a broader downturn in the industry. The report presents this as the company’s stated reason; it does not provide independent analysis of the business decision.
How many jobs were involved?
Motorola said 3,100 employees could be affected. That figure describes the workforce potentially affected by the proposal, not a confirmed count of jobs ultimately lost.

Why did the proposal draw political and union criticism?
Political response
UK prime minister Tony Blair called the announcement a “bitter blow.” EDN reported that he had intervened when closure was first mooted. Tam Dalyell, the local MP, praised Motorola’s record and urged the company to continue development at Dunfermline, saying: “Motorola has done extremely well over the last 30 years. It is still the largest private employer in Scotland.”
Union response
Danny Carrigan, the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union’s national officer for Scotland, called the news “very bleak” and said Bathgate staff had hoped the plant could be saved. He also said the Scottish Executive believed the plant might be kept open until an upturn. Carrigan alleged that Motorola had received £20 million in grants; that was his reported claim, not an independently verified figure in EDN’s report.

Did Motorola consult workers before a final decision?
Yes. Motorola said it was discussing the proposal with an elected employee consultation forum and would provide employees with support services during the coming weeks. Its statement explicitly said no final decision had yet been made. EDN therefore documented the consultation stage and the expectation of closure, but did not establish when the factory legally or operationally closed.
