A “motion activated coffee machine” is best understood as a do-it-yourself automation, not a widely established retail appliance category. In the documented build, a PIR motion sensor detects a toothbrush routine; a controller sends an event; and a relay switches power to an ordinary coffee maker. The sensor detects movement, not who caused it, so this is a convenience project rather than identity-based control.
What a motion-activated coffee machine does
The clearest example is Team Legend’s 2017 toothbrush-activated coffee maker project. Its goal is to start brewing when it detects movement near a toothbrush, so a person can find coffee ready after getting ready in the morning. The coffee maker itself is an ordinary appliance; the motion sensor, controllers, and relay provide the automation.
This is not the same as a coffee maker with a built-in motion detector. Nor does the project establish that a mainstream manufacturer sells a verified appliance under that category name. A smart plug may automate a coffee maker on a schedule or rule, but that alone is not motion-triggered control.
How the documented build works
- Detect motion: A PIR motion sensor detects movement of the toothbrush and sends a digital signal.
- Publish an event: The first Particle Photon uses Wi-Fi to publish a cloud event named
brew-coffee. - Switch the coffee maker: A second Particle Photon subscribes to that event and controls a relay wired in series with the coffee maker’s household power.
- End the cycle: The project code keeps the relay on for a fixed ten-minute interval, then turns it off. Additional events are ignored while that programmed interval is underway.
That ten-minute setting is the project’s programmed relay-on duration, not a universal estimate of how long a coffee maker takes to brew. The source describes the design and code, but does not establish that ten minutes is suitable for every machine or use case.

Parts and controller options
Team Legend lists two Particle Photons, one generic PIR motion sensor, two breadboards, one Tolako 5V relay module for Arduino, and one DS18B20 digital temperature sensor. The temperature sensor is optional to the basic motion-triggered brewing idea: it is used to measure the coffee in the pot.
| Build element | Documented option | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Motion detection | Generic PIR motion sensor | Signals movement near the toothbrush. |
| Controllers | Two Particle Photons | One publishes the event; the other receives it and drives the relay. |
| Power switching | Tolako 5V relay module for Arduino | Switches power to the coffee maker in the documented arrangement. |
| Temperature monitoring | DS18B20 digital temperature sensor | Measures pot temperature for optional logging. |
A separate UCLA ECE M119 final-project profile identifies perk-up, another motion-activated coffee-machine project, as using an Arduino Nano 33 IoT. The profile supports that board as an alternate controller path, but does not provide a full bill of materials or performance report; it is not enough to conclude that its wiring or software matches Team Legend’s build.

Motion triggering: convenience and false activations
A PIR sensor detects motion in its sensing area; it does not recognize a toothbrush or verify the user’s identity. Team Legend notes that the routine can be fooled by moving and replacing the toothbrush. Other movement within the sensor’s detection area can also cause unwanted activations. Treat this as a motion trigger, not a reliable way to confirm that someone has brushed their teeth.
Trigger reliability depends on where the sensor is placed and what movement it can see. A more selective trigger may reduce unintended starts, but the cited projects do not document a tested alternative sensor or quantify false activations. Do not assume a different sensor will work with the same wiring or code.

Cloud control, timing, and temperature logging
The documented two-Photon design uses a cloud event to connect detection to switching. That gives the project a clear sequence, but it also means the event travels over Wi-Fi and through the cloud rather than being described as a purely local sensor-to-relay action. The project materials do not establish offline behavior or provide a reliability comparison with local control.
For optional monitoring, a DS18B20 sensor can be placed in the pot. The project publishes temperature readings to the cloud and logs them using an IFTTT spreadsheet workflow. Team Legend reported an average cooling rate of 0.4°F per minute after the machine turns off; that is the project’s reported observation, not a general coffee temperature or cooling specification.

Electrical and practical considerations
The relay is the bridge between low-voltage controller logic and the coffee maker’s household-power circuit. The project’s parts list names a 5V relay module, but the available description does not establish the electrical ratings, enclosure, certifications, or installation suitability of any particular module for a given coffee maker. Household-power switching can create shock and fire hazards if components or wiring are unsuitable.
- Use components rated and approved for the voltage, current, and load involved; do not assume a module is suitable just because it is labeled “5V” or “for Arduino.”
- Keep mains wiring enclosed and inaccessible, and do not build an exposed relay-and-breadboard arrangement for unattended everyday use.
- Check the coffee maker’s own instructions and behavior when power is restored. A relay can switch power, but it cannot guarantee that every machine will start brewing automatically when power returns.
- Consider the risks of unattended heating and water handling, and provide a way to disable the automation.
If you are not qualified to design and safely enclose a mains-voltage circuit, use a professionally designed, appropriately rated control device or get help from a qualified person. A smart plug is not automatically safe or compatible for every coffee maker; confirm the device’s rating and the appliance’s operating behavior.

Is this the right approach?
| Approach | What it offers | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PIR sensor with a controller and relay | Can start an ordinary coffee maker in response to detected movement. | Motion is not identity verification; the documented two-Photon path uses a cloud event and mains-power switching. |
| Arduino Nano 33 IoT project path | A documented alternative controller platform for a motion-activated coffee machine. | The cited profile does not provide a complete parts list or performance details. |
| Smart plug with a schedule or rule | Can automate a compatible coffee maker without a dedicated PIR trigger. | A schedule or general IoT rule is not evidence of motion-specific triggering, and compatibility depends on the appliance and plug. |
Choose a PIR-based build if the aim is a learning project and you can handle sensor behavior, controller programming, and safe power switching. If the practical goal is simply to have coffee ready at a chosen time, a compatible programmable coffee maker or a properly rated smart-home setup may be simpler; neither should be described as a motion-activated product unless it actually responds to motion.
