Mortal Kombat: Armageddon has 62 playable characters in its PlayStation 2 and Xbox releases. The Wii edition is commonly reported as adding Khameleon for a platform-specific total of 63. Its “fighting styles” are not one universal class system: each fighter has character-specific hand-to-hand and weapon moves, while aerial and ground combat are broader systems that apply across the game. The result is a huge roster whose practical differences come from range, move properties, weapon access and matchup tools rather than from a single shared tier chart.
Roster size by platform
The safest way to state Armageddon’s roster is to tie the number to the hardware version. The 2006 Prima Official Game Guide says its character guide covers all 62 fighters, and its introduction calls the total “an astonishing 62 characters.” The WorldCat catalog record for that guide also describes coverage of 62 playable characters. A contemporaneous archived game-feature page listed PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions for October 2006 and described the game as having more than 50 playable fighters. Later fan-reference listings report that the Wii version adds Khameleon, making 63 for that version only.
| Version | Reported playable roster | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 2 | 62 | Supported by the 2006 Prima guide and its catalog record. |
| Xbox | 62 | Covered by the same guide; the archived feature page lists Xbox among the October 2006 platforms. |
| Wii | 63, including Khameleon | Platform-specific figure reported by later fan-reference pages; lower-confidence evidence than the contemporaneous guide. |
Do not turn the Wii exception into a universal claim that every release contains 63 fighters. Conversely, describing the game only as having “more than 50” repeats the broad marketing-era wording and hides the more precise 62-character count documented for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

In Armageddon, a style label identifies a fighter’s move set, not a selectable global ruleset. The Prima guide’s catalog description says it covers moves for all styles and weapons, along with character strengths, weaknesses, matchups and finishing moves. That wording points to a character-by-character reference: you learn what a particular fighter can do in each stance or with a particular weapon, then choose tactics around those tools.

Hand-to-hand styles
Every roster entry should be read first as a hand-to-hand move set. This is the fighter’s close-range toolkit: normals, launchers, throws, strings, special attacks and the transitions that connect them. The style name by itself does not tell you whether the fighter is easy to use, excels at pressure or prefers counterattacks. Those conclusions require the actual move list and matchup information for that character.
Weapon styles
Weapon moves form a second, character-specific layer. A weapon can alter reach, attack angles and the distance at which a string is safe or punishable. The guide treats styles and weapons together, so a useful roster entry records both the unarmed style and the weapon shown in the game’s move list. Do not infer a weapon assignment from a fighter’s costume, story role or earlier appearances; verify it in the in-game command list or a guide entry for the exact version.
Aerial and ground combat are system layers
The Prima introduction separately discusses aerial and ground combat, describing the aerial component as a return to ideas associated with Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. These are combat systems that shape how a character moves, launches, follows an opponent and continues an exchange. They should not be mistaken for an individual fighter’s style label. A fighter may have a distinctive hand-to-hand style and weapon while still using the same broad aerial and ground rules as the rest of the roster.

How to evaluate a fighter without guessing
Because the accessible guide material confirms the categories but not every individual assignment, a reliable character comparison needs a repeatable method. Use the following process for each fighter you intend to learn.
- Open the fighter’s move list. From character selection or the in-game training/move-list screen, note the exact hand-to-hand style name and the weapon style name displayed for that character. Menu wording can differ slightly by platform, so use the labels shown by your copy.
- Separate the two move sets. Record unarmed attacks independently from weapon attacks. This prevents a long-range weapon string from being mistaken for the fighter’s basic style.
- Mark the range and role. Describe whether the verified moves work at close, mid or extended range; whether they launch, knock down, create space or punish a whiff; and whether they are primarily offensive or defensive. These are observations from the listed properties, not a universal ranking.
- Check aerial options. Identify the launcher, jump-in or air-combo routes available in the move list. Treat these as applications of the aerial system, not as a separate character class.
- Check ground interaction. Note wake-up pressure, grounded follow-ups and ways to control an opponent after a knockdown. Again, these are system interactions filtered through the fighter’s own moves.
- Confirm finishers and matchup notes. The Prima guide advertises finishing moves, strengths, weaknesses, arenas and preferred matchups. Use those details only when they are present for the specific fighter and platform you are documenting.
This format produces a useful roster guide without inventing a complete style chart from memory. A statement such as “fighter A uses style B” is only dependable when the label has been checked in the relevant move list or character entry.
How the style system affects play
Range and approach
Unarmed strings generally define how a fighter starts pressure once inside striking distance. Weapon attacks can change the approach by offering additional reach or a different angle, but they also create their own timing and recovery questions. When comparing two fighters, ask which one can reach first, which one can safely end a string, and which one can force the opponent to respect a launcher or throw.

Launchers, air routes and knockdowns
Aerial combat matters after a launcher or during a jump-in sequence. The practical question is not whether a fighter is “an aerial character”; it is which verified attacks produce an air opportunity and what follow-up the move list permits. Ground combat becomes important after the opponent lands, when wake-up timing, grounded hits and positioning determine who controls the next exchange.

Matchups instead of universal rankings
The guide’s inclusion of strengths, weaknesses and preferred matchups is a reminder that style value is contextual. A long weapon may be useful against a slow approach but risky against a character who can close distance quickly. A strong launcher may matter less if the opponent can escape the setup. Build comparisons around the actual matchup and arena rather than claiming that one style is automatically best across all 62 fighters.
Roster-related game modes
The large cast is tied to several modes that make Armageddon different from a simple character-select screen.

Kreate-A-Fighter
Kreate-A-Fighter lets you build a custom combatant rather than choosing only from the established roster. This is why promotional language about including every earlier fighter should not be read as a literal, exhaustive historical list: the game also expects players to create a new character. A custom fighter’s practical identity comes from the style, weapon and move choices you assign, so document those selections separately from the 62-character standard roster.
Kreate-A-Fatality
The archived feature page says each character can create a fatality by stringing attacks together. This is a shared Kreate-A-Fatality system, not evidence that every fighter retains a separate, classic list of unique fatalities from earlier games. When explaining a finisher, distinguish between a preset move shown in a character guide and a sequence assembled through the creation system.
Konquest
The same feature page advertises an expanded Konquest mode. Konquest provides context and progression around the combat systems, but its presence does not change the platform roster count. Keep story-mode characters, unlock conditions and the standard playable roster as separate categories when making a checklist.

Blaze as boss
The archived feature description identifies Blaze as the boss. That role is a mode and progression detail, not a reason to inflate the ordinary roster total or to treat every boss appearance as an additional selectable fighter on every platform.

| Later fan-reference listings | Wii reported as adding Khameleon for 63. | Lower-confidence platform exception; verify against an original Wii manual or publisher material if the distinction is critical. |
The archived feature page also reproduces trailer narration stating: “In the days of Armageddon, there will be no great heroes, the Elder Gods will guide you no longer, there will only be Kombat.” That is trailer wording, not a named-person quotation or a technical description of the style system.
Common roster and style mistakes
- Quoting 63 without naming Wii. The reported Khameleon addition is platform-specific.
- Using “more than 50” as the final count. That was contemporaneous feature-page wording; the guide documents a more precise 62 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
- Calling aerial combat a character style. Aerial and ground combat describe broad mechanics, while styles and weapons are tied to individual fighters.
- Publishing an unverified fighter chart. The available excerpts do not establish every style and weapon assignment. Check the exact move list before naming one.
- Treating Kreate-A-Fatality as a traditional unique-fatality list. The documented feature is a system for stringing attacks into a fatality.
- Inferring balance from names. A style title or weapon does not by itself prove range, safety, matchup strength or competitive ranking.
Practical takeaway for players and guide writers
For a PlayStation 2 or Xbox copy, start with the 62-character roster documented by the 2006 guide. If you are using Wii, identify that version before counting and check whether Khameleon is present. For each fighter, record the exact hand-to-hand style, weapon, verified range tools, launcher and ground options, then add matchup or finisher details only when the move list or a character-specific guide entry supports them. Keep aerial and ground combat in a separate system section, and describe Kreate-A-Fighter and Kreate-A-Fatality as creation features rather than extra roster categories.
