Morrisons is piloting grocery collection lockers at its Skipton store in North Yorkshire. They let customers collect online orders from temperature-controlled compartments using an access code, avoiding the usual wait for staff to bring shopping to a car. They do not let people skip checkout queues during a normal in-store shop. The available launch coverage also does not establish that shoppers are divided over the trial.
Can you skip the queues at Morrisons?
Only in a specific sense: the lockers are for collecting a grocery order placed online. Instead of waiting for a colleague to bring the order to your car, you retrieve the pre-packed shopping from the locker assigned to it. This is not a new checkout lane or a way to bypass queues while shopping in store.
Morrisons calls the technology a UK supermarket first. That is the retailer’s claim; the available sources do not independently audit every supermarket’s use of lockers. Locker technology for grocery orders is not new internationally: supplier StrongPoint says its grocery lockers have been deployed across Europe for more than a decade. Where is Morrisons trialling the lockers?
The pilot is at Morrisons’ Skipton store in North Yorkshire. The sources establish a trial at that location, not a nationwide rollout. Morrisons’ store page lists Click & Collect as a service but does not itself confirm locker availability or the pilot’s terms. Morrisons Skipton store page

How do Morrisons Click & Collect lockers work?
- Place an online grocery order. Select a collection time as part of ordering.
- Go to the locker terminal at the store. Enter the access code for your order. Grocery Gazette reports that this is a unique six-digit code; Morrisons’ announcement describes it as an access code. Grocery Gazette report
- Collect the pre-packed bags. The order is prepared in paper bags, and a larger cross-category order may be split across more than one locker compartment.
Morrisons says a large compartment can hold up to three bags. Smaller chilled or frozen compartments hold one to two bags, depending on capacity. These are published capacity figures, not a guarantee that a particular order will fit in one compartment. Morrisons announcement
How are chilled, frozen and age-restricted items handled?
The lockers have separate storage for different product types. Morrisons lists the operating temperatures as:
Rank #2
- PACKAGE DELIVERY BOX FOR OUTSIDE – Bright yellow “PLEASE LEAVE PACKAGES IN THE BOX” decal helps delivery drivers quickly identify where to place packages. Keep deliveries off the doorstep and reduce the risk of misplaced or exposed parcels.
- EASY-MOVE PARCEL DROP BOX – Recessed handles on both sides provide a convenient grip for repositioning the box. Simply tilt and slide it when cleaning, rearranging, or changing its location.
- LOCKABLE PACKAGE DROP BOX – Built-in padlock hasp works with a separate padlock (not included) to help restrict unauthorized access. The delivery sign tells drivers where to place packages while the lid helps keep them more secure.
- WATERPROOF RESIN FOR OUTDOOR USE – Sturdy resin helps withstand sun, rain, and changing temperatures. Use it as a package box for outside deliveries or a deck box for cushions, garden tools, toys, and patio accessories.
- 50-GALLON PACKAGE BOX – Measures 30.4"L × 16.7"W × 21.7"H to hold multiple packages, bulky deliveries, and household items. The slim design fits easily on porches, patios, balconies, and in garages.
| Groceries | Temperature listed by Morrisons |
|---|---|
| Chilled | 3–5°C |
| Frozen | −18°C to −20°C |
| Ambient | 16°C |
If an order contains age-restricted products, staff must verify the customer’s identification before the relevant compartment is unlocked. Morrisons says this is handled in line with Challenge 25; the locker process therefore does not remove the age check. Morrisons announcement
What changes for Skipton collection?
Morrisons says the lockers are intended to make collection quicker and more flexible by expanding available collection slots and removing the wait for a colleague to bring an order to a customer’s car. Grocery Gazette reports that Click & Collect hours at Skipton were to be extended by two hours a day. That reported change concerns this trial; it is not evidence of a chain-wide extension.

The sources describe the locker pilot but do not establish whether customers at Skipton can choose between locker collection and the traditional staffed handover. Charlotte Exell, Morrisons’ Group Online Director, said the locker solution was “designed” to make Click & Collect quick, convenient and flexible. That describes the retailer’s intention, not a measured result. Grocery Gazette report · Morrisons announcement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are shoppers divided, and does the trial save time?
The available launch reports and company materials do not provide attributable shopper comments, a poll or other evidence that customers are divided. They also do not publish independently measured queue reductions, time saved, customer satisfaction, take-up or overall trial performance. The practical difference is clear—a self-service locker handover rather than waiting for staff to bring an order to a car—but the size of any time saving has not been established.
