MongoDB made the source code for mongot, the engine behind MongoDB Search and Vector Search, publicly available under the Server Side Public License (SSPL) in a public-preview announcement on January 15, 2026. That source release was not the same milestone as product general availability: on June 30, 2026, MongoDB announced Search and Vector Search as generally available for Community Edition.
What is mongot?
mongot is MongoDB’s indexing and query-execution engine for full-text and vector search. It uses Apache Lucene search structures and runs as a process separate from the core database process, mongod. MongoDB’s January 15, 2026 announcement describes how mongod proxies $search, $searchMeta and $vectorSearch requests to mongot. The search engine queries its indexes and returns hits; mongod then continues processing the aggregation pipeline.
MongoDB says mongot maintains indexes asynchronously by replicating database changes through change streams, outside the transaction commit window. This describes the architecture MongoDB uses; it is not a quantified guarantee about latency or workload performance.
What changed after the source-code release?
The January source announcement characterized mongot as a public preview. MongoDB later announced a separate milestone: Search and Vector Search for Community Edition became generally available on June 30, 2026. The Community Edition announcement establishes product availability, not a change to the date or status of the source release.

MongoDB’s July 1, 2026 announcement says the self-managed stack supports $search, $searchMeta, $vectorSearch, $rankFusion and $scoreFusion. MongoDB connects these capabilities to retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI agents and chatbots. Those are supported-use-case and capability statements, not evidence that a particular application will produce better answers or meet a specific performance target.
How can mongot be deployed?
MongoDB describes two deployment patterns for mongot:
- Sidecar: Run
mongoton the same machine asmongod. - Separate search service: Run multiple
mongotprocesses behind a load balancer to isolate resources and scale search separately.
For sharded clusters, MongoDB describes local asynchronous indexes and a scatter-gather query path: results from shards are merged by a router in descending $searchScore order. These are vendor-documented designs, not independently tested recommendations. Choose a deployment based on your infrastructure, operational capacity and the supported configurations for your MongoDB version.
Is mongot open source?
MongoDB makes the source available under the Server Side Public License. The mongot repository says published versions are under SSPL v1. It is accurate to call mongot source available under SSPL; the reviewed sources do not establish it as OSI-approved open-source software.
Source access can let developers inspect query execution, debug behavior and build for particular environmental constraints, as MongoDB says in its source announcement. Before using, modifying or redistributing it, read the applicable license terms; seek legal advice for questions specific to your use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between Atlas and self-managed MongoDB?
MongoDB presents the source release as part of a more unified Search and Vector Search experience across Atlas, on-premises and hybrid environments. The later Community Edition GA announcement confirms availability for that edition, but does not establish that every feature or configuration is identical in each deployment.
- Deployment control: Decide whether a managed Atlas deployment or a self-managed Community or Enterprise environment suits your needs.
- Operations: Account for who will deploy, monitor, scale and maintain the database and search processes.
- Source access: Consider whether inspecting or building the engine matters, while evaluating the SSPL terms for your intended use.
- Version and feature support: Verify the exact operators, deployment pattern and edition support in the documentation for the version you plan to run.
MongoDB’s official Community download page displayed mongot Community version 1.70.4 in the search results captured for this article. That version listing can change; check the current download page and MongoDB documentation before installing or designing around a particular version.
