Mojo Lens was an augmented-reality contact-lens prototype, not a product customers could buy. In January 2023, Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins said the lens had not shipped and that the company was slowing its development to focus on Micro-LED displays. The available dated evidence does not establish whether lens development or regulatory work resumed after that announcement.

What was Mojo Lens?

Mojo Vision developed Mojo Lens as a contact lens intended to place digital information in a wearer’s field of view. Its early demonstrations were aimed at showing contextual information without requiring the wearer to look at a phone or a conventional screen. That describes the project’s intended use, not a proven consumer benefit or a product ready for sale.

In December 2020, Mojo and contact-lens maker Menicon announced a joint development agreement. The stated feasibility work covered lens materials, cleaning, and fitting; a broader relationship was conditional on successful studies. The companies’ announcement called the agreement a step forward, but it does not establish the partnership’s current status. Menicon’s announcement

What could the prototype do?

IEEE Spectrum’s March 30, 2022 report described a monochrome microLED display with a reported density of 14,000 pixels per inch. The prototype also included medical-grade microbatteries, a custom power-management circuit, a custom 5-gigahertz radio using a proprietary low-latency protocol, and motion sensors for eye tracking. The custom image sensors Mojo planned were not yet part of that prototype. IEEE Spectrum’s report

The interface was designed for the wearer to navigate or select information with eye movements. Demonstrations described by IEEE Spectrum included:

  • Compass headings and travel information.
  • A display for biking and a teleprompter.
  • Monochrome video.
  • An Alexa Shopping List application, added to the report in a November 3, 2022 update and developed with Amazon’s support.

These were prototype demonstrations, not evidence of a released app ecosystem, retail-ready experience, or finished product specifications. No battery-life figure, lens price, prescription range, or launch date is established by the cited reporting.

Did anyone actually wear the Mojo smart contact lens?

Yes, according to Mojo as reported by IEEE Spectrum: CEO Drew Perkins wore what the company described as a feature-complete, battery-powered, wirelessly communicating prototype on June 23, 2022. That was an internal on-eye demonstration; it does not establish general wearability, consumer safety, regulatory approval, or market readiness.

That milestone is separate from IEEE Spectrum journalist Tekla S. Perry’s March 2022 demonstration. Perry looked through a lens held close to her eye and explicitly did not put it in her eye. The held-lens setup could not track her eye movement. IEEE Spectrum reported that the prototype was still in safety testing at the time.

Was Mojo Lens FDA approved?

The cited reporting does not establish FDA approval, clearance, or certification for Mojo Lens. At the time of IEEE Spectrum’s 2022 report, further development and clinical testing remained before an FDA application for consumer sale. Mojo executive Steve Sinclair told the publication, “Everything is predicated on eventually getting FDA certification. We don’t like to presume how long that’s going to take.” That statement was a company view of a future step, not evidence that the step was completed. IEEE Spectrum also noted that contact-lens fitting requires an eye exam.

What happened to Mojo Vision’s smart contact lens?

On January 6, 2023, Perkins said fundraising challenges had led Mojo Vision to pivot toward Micro-LED technology and decelerate Mojo Lens work. He said the lens had not shipped. In the same announcement, he described the technical achievement while acknowledging it had not reached the marketplace. Mojo Vision’s January 2023 statement

Mojo’s April 6, 2023 news headline reported a $22 million raise alongside the company’s pivot to Micro-LED displays; that announcement is not evidence that contact-lens development resumed. Mojo Vision’s April 2023 news item

Mojo’s news index, checked in 2026, showed newer Micro-LED developments and the 2023 pivot announcement, but an index cannot prove that no lens work took place afterward. The post-2023 status of Mojo Lens is therefore not established by the available dated evidence. Mojo Vision news

How to interpret the project’s milestones

Date What was reported What it establishes
September 21, 2020; announced December 8, 2020 Mojo and Menicon entered a joint development agreement. Feasibility work on materials, cleaning, and fitting; any expanded relationship was conditional on successful studies. Menicon announcement
March 30, 2022 IEEE Spectrum reported prototype components and a held-lens demonstration. Technical details and a through-the-lens demonstration, not a journalist wearing the lens. IEEE Spectrum
June 23, 2022 Perkins wore a feature-complete prototype, according to Mojo as reported by IEEE Spectrum. An on-eye company demonstration, not proof of consumer readiness or approval. IEEE Spectrum
November 3, 2022 IEEE Spectrum added the Alexa Shopping List demonstration to its report. A prototype app developed with Amazon’s support, not a launched service. IEEE Spectrum
January 6, 2023 Mojo said the lens had not shipped and it was decelerating lens work to focus on Micro-LED. The company’s stated status as of that date. Mojo Vision
April 6, 2023 Mojo’s headline reported a $22 million raise and a pivot to Micro-LED displays. A company-reported raise and pivot, not a return to lens development. Mojo Vision

Is the Mojo smart contact lens available to buy?

No sale or shipment is established by these sources. Mojo said in January 2023 that the lens had not shipped, and the cited reporting describes development prototypes and demonstrations rather than a consumer launch. No compatible case, cleaning solution, replacement part, or other Mojo Lens accessory is established either.
