On Gandhi Jayanti, 2 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for Mahatma Gandhi’s message to guide India towards “a better society and a Viksit Bharat,” according to Hindustan Times. In a separate video message reported by DD India, Modi said Gandhi’s ideology had inspired people around the world and would remain relevant.
What Modi said on Gandhi Jayanti
Hindustan Times reported that Modi posted on X: “May Bapu’s timeless message keep guiding us towards a better society and a Viksit Bharat.” The statement links Gandhi’s legacy with the government’s development aspiration, but it is an appeal about guidance—not a claim that Gandhi’s principles alone guarantee a particular development outcome.
DD India separately reported remarks from a video message in which Modi said: “The ideology of Mahatma Gandhi has inspired the entire world.” He added: “I believe that as long as the impact of Gandhi Ji’s ideology remains with humankind, its inspiration and relevance will continue to remain among us.” These quotations are reproduced as reported by DD India.
What Viksit Bharat means in this message
In Hindustan Times’ account, “Viksit Bharat” is India’s national development goal oriented towards 2047. Modi’s post places Gandhi’s message alongside that aspiration. The report does not set out the goal’s full definition, targets, or measures, so the phrase should not be read here as a specific policy commitment or a measured result.

Modi’s appeal about Khadi and Swadeshi
Hindustan Times also reported a separate appeal from Modi encouraging people to buy a Khadi product on 2 October and identify it as Swadeshi. The report quotes him saying: “Mahatma Gandhi always encouraged everyone to adopt ‘Swadeshi’. In this process, Khadi remains a top priority. I appeal to everyone to buy at least one Khadi product on October 2 and proudly say that it is ‘Swadeshi’,” he said.
The report did not name a particular product, producer, or seller. Its account associates Gandhi’s legacy with values including truth, non-violence, compassion, simplicity, service, Swadeshi, and Khadi; those are reported themes, not a complete account of Gandhi’s political thought.
Other leaders’ Gandhi Jayanti messages
Hindustan Times also reported comments from President Droupadi Murmu and Union home minister Amit Shah. Their remarks were separate from Modi’s post and video message; they should not be treated as statements made by the prime minister.

The two news accounts published on 2 October 2026 describe Modi’s Gandhi Jayanti tribute and attribute the remarks above to him. They do not independently establish the wording against a primary X post or full video, nor do they provide official policy documentation defining Viksit Bharat. The clearest supported account is therefore the one the reports give: Modi invoked Gandhi’s continuing relevance and called for his message to guide India towards a better society and Viksit Bharat.
