That was a historical product assessment, not a current security verdict. Google’s Work Profile model and Samsung Knox later converged: a work space separates business apps and data from personal content, while Samsung devices can add Knox-specific controls and management.
The 2015 answer, stated carefully
An InfoWorld comparison published on March 20, 2015 summarized Samsung Knox 2.4 as offering more capability than Android for Work, while concluding that Knox was not well suited to BYOD. The available summary does not expose the article’s complete feature list or test methodology, so that conclusion should not be expanded into claims about particular controls, test results or threat protection.
It also describes products from different points in their evolution. “Android for Work” was the period’s name; Google’s current documentation uses Work Profiles and broader Android management terminology. Samsung later described Knox and Android Enterprise features as complementary rather than mutually exclusive.
What a Work Profile is designed to do
Google’s Work Profile creates a dedicated work space on a supported Android device. Work apps and their data are managed separately from personal apps and data, allowing an organization to apply policies to the business side without treating an employee’s entire personal phone as corporate property.

BYOD
For BYOD, the separation is the central privacy and management concept: the employer administers the work profile, while personal applications and content remain outside that profile’s normal management boundary. Exact capabilities depend on the Android version, device support and the organization’s enterprise-mobility-management (EMM) configuration.
COPE and company-owned devices
Google also identifies Work Profiles for company-owned, personally enabled (COPE) deployments. Ownership changes what an administrator can configure on the device. A company-owned device can support broader controls than a personally owned phone, even when both use a work profile.

How Knox changes the comparison
Knox is Samsung’s device security and management framework. It can provide Samsung-specific protections and administrative controls in addition to Android’s enterprise framework, but those functions are not universal Android features.
Device and ownership scope
Current Samsung management guidance makes support conditional on the device and provisioning mode. Some controls are exclusive to Knox devices. Administrators configure many of these capabilities through the Knox Service Plugin, and the resulting controls depend on the EMM and the ownership mode selected during enrollment.

Deployment implications
A Knox-versus-Android choice is therefore not simply a choice between two isolated products. An organization must check:
- Whether its selected Samsung models support the required Knox features.
- Whether the EMM supports the relevant Knox Service Plugin configuration.
- Whether enrollment is BYOD, work-profile-on-company-owned, fully managed, or another supported mode.
- Which Android release and enterprise-management APIs are available on the target devices.
Samsung’s later convergence of Knox and Android management
In a July 2016 announcement, Samsung said Android Work Profiles and Knox protection worked together on Samsung devices running Android 6.0 or later, naming the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge among the devices. Samsung described updates to the two feature sets as operating in tandem, changing the practical framing from “Knox or Android for Work” to layered Android Enterprise management with Samsung-specific capabilities where supported.

Samsung’s announcement stated: “Work data in Android’s Work Profiles allows IT admins to apply policies to prevent data leakage, prevent installation of apps from unknown sources and protect company data.” This is Samsung’s description of the platform’s intended policy capabilities, not an independent measurement of security outcomes.
Capability comparison
| Question | Knox 2.4 (2015 context) | Android for Work / current Work Profile context |
|---|---|---|
| Historical positioning | The March 20, 2015 InfoWorld summary called it more capable than Android for Work. | The same summary presented Android for Work as less capable at that time. |
| BYOD fit | The 2015 summary judged Knox unsuitable for BYOD. | Work Profiles are explicitly intended to separate work and personal data, including BYOD use cases. |
| Personal/work separation | Samsung-specific security and management framework; the available summary does not establish the exact 2015 controls compared. | Dedicated work space for managed work apps and data, separate from personal use. |
| Hardware scope | Samsung Knox features require supported Samsung Knox devices. | Support depends on compatible Android devices and the management mode; not every Android device exposes identical controls. |
| Management configuration | Not established by the available InfoWorld summary. | Ownership and provisioning determine available controls; Samsung-only controls may require Knox Service Plugin. |
| Relationship between platforms | Originally compared as a competing approach. | Samsung later described Knox and Android Enterprise/Work Profile capabilities as operating together on supported Samsung devices. |
Choosing an approach for a deployment
Choose a Work Profile-centered design when
- Employees use personal phones and the priority is a clearly bounded business workspace.
- The organization needs a consistent Android enterprise model across multiple supported manufacturers.
- Privacy and limited personal-device administration are more important than Samsung-only controls.
Add Knox-specific management when
- The fleet is standardized on supported Samsung Knox devices.
- The security or compliance requirement depends on a Samsung-only control.
- The EMM can deploy and maintain the required Knox Service Plugin settings.
Validate before enrollment
- List the exact device models, Android releases and regional variants in scope.
- Choose the ownership mode: BYOD, company-owned with a work profile, or fully managed.
- Map each required policy to a standard Android Enterprise control or a Knox-specific control.
- Confirm EMM and Knox Service Plugin support, then pilot enrollment and policy enforcement on every device family.
- Document what administrators can see or wipe in the personal area, especially for BYOD users.
Evidence and terminology limits
Samsung’s 2015 material described platform protections and certifications, and a Samsung Insights post attributed historical adoption figures to a Google post: more than 100,000 organizations and close to 40 partners across device makers, carriers and application developers. Those are dated, second-hand figures, not current market totals.
Best Value
- EXCLUSIVE TO T-MOBILE: This model is locked to T-Mobile, designed to work seamlessly with T-Mobile’s 5G and LTE network for optimal speed and connectivity. Not compatible with other carriers.
- FULLY TESTED & FUNCTIONAL: This Galaxy A15 5G (Renewed) has been professionally inspected and tested to ensure full functionality, with about 80% battery health for reliable performance.
- Products You Can Trust: Every item is cleaned, inspected, and refurbished as necessary by Amazon-qualified suppliers to meet strict quality standards.
- Purchases with an Impact: Buying Amazon Renewed helps extend the life of this product, reducing electronic waste and supporting a more sustainable planet

Vendor descriptions establish intended features, not independent comparative security performance. The 2015 InfoWorld summary is sufficient for the top-line historical judgment, but not for reconstructing every feature or test behind it. Current decisions should rely on the exact Android, Samsung and EMM documentation for the devices and policies being deployed.
