MLB teams acquire players mainly through trades and free-agent signings, but the routes work differently. In free agency, a player whose contract and service-time status permit it can choose among interested clubs. In a trade, two clubs agree to transfer a player who remains under contract or club control; some players can block a destination. Service time, contract terms, draft compensation and roster rules shape what each route involves.

How do free agency and trades differ?

Question Free agency Trade
Who is available? A player with free-agent status. Six years of MLB service is the usual threshold, though other routes can apply. A player still under contract or club control who is involved in a transfer negotiated by clubs.
Who chooses the destination? The player negotiates with interested clubs and chooses whether and where to sign, subject to contract terms and the available market. The clubs negotiate the transfer. A player’s contract or service-based rights may limit where he can be sent.
What does the acquiring club give up? It agrees to a player contract. A signing may also have draft-pick consequences under the qualifying-offer system. It negotiates value with the other club. There is no single exchange package or valuation formula established by the rules cited here.
What constraints matter? Service time, existing contract or extension, qualifying-offer eligibility and consequences, and market conditions. Contract terms, player veto rights, agreement between the clubs, and any roster restrictions that apply to the player.

Neither route is inherently better for a club or player. A team weighing an acquisition needs to consider the player’s eligibility and contract, the money or assets it would commit, the player’s preferences and veto rights, and the timing and roster consequences. The rules cited here do not establish that one route has a higher success rate than the other.

When does a player become a free agent?

For the ordinary route, service time is central. MLB counts each day a player spends on the 26-man roster or Major League injured list; 172 days count as one year of service. MLB describes a regular season as 187 days, so a player does not need to appear in all 187 days to earn a service year. The usual threshold is six years of service, after which a player generally becomes eligible for free agency at season’s end unless an extension already covers those free-agent years. See MLB’s service-time glossary.

Contract status can change the route

A club may also decline to tender a contract to a player still under its control, making him a free agent. That is a club decision, not the ordinary six-year path. A player who has signed an extension may also have free-agent years covered by that agreement, affecting when he can reach the market.

Arbitration is a salary-setting stage, not a way to acquire a player

Players with three to fewer than six years of service are generally eligible for salary arbitration; certain “Super Two” players with less than three years can qualify as well. If the club and player do not settle, an arbitration panel determines the salary. Arbitration changes pay while the player remains with his club; it is not a separate acquisition route.

What happens when a club signs a free agent?

A free agent can negotiate with clubs interested in signing him. The signing club commits to the contract it agrees with the player. In some cases, the qualifying-offer system can also affect draft picks for the player’s former club and new club.

Qualifying offers and draft-pick consequences

Under the framework currently described by MLB, an eligible former club can make a one-year qualifying offer valued at the mean salary of the 125 highest-paid players. MLB lists the 2026 value as $22.025 million. If the player rejects the offer and signs elsewhere, draft-pick consequences may apply to the former and signing clubs. Eligibility and compensation depend on detailed conditions, so the qualifying-offer label alone is not enough to determine the consequences for a particular player. MLB’s qualifying-offer glossary explains the mechanism.

This is the existing framework described in MLB’s materials, not a guarantee that the system will remain unchanged after the current labor agreement expires.

How does a trade work, and can a player refuse one?

A trade is an agreement between clubs to transfer a player who remains under contract or club control. The clubs negotiate what changes hands; the rules cited here do not set a universal package or formula for valuing players. A player may have rights that restrict a trade, but the specific protection depends on his situation.

Contractual no-trade clauses

A contract can give a player the right to block trades to specified clubs. The terms vary by contract, so a no-trade clause does not necessarily mean the player can veto every possible destination. MLB’s no-trade clause glossary describes the protection.

What other routes can put a player on a club?

Not every acquisition is a free-agent signing or a negotiated trade. The Rule 5 Draft can let a club select certain unprotected players from another club, subject to special roster restrictions. It is a separate route, not ordinary free agency.

Rule 5 protection and roster limits

According to MLB’s Rule 5 Draft glossary, players signed at age 18 or younger must be added to a 40-man roster within five seasons, while players signed at 19 or older must be protected within four seasons or can become eligible. A selecting club generally must keep its pick on the 26-man roster, subject to the rule’s waiver and return process. A Rule 5 pick can be traded, but restrictions follow the player unless the original club transfers full rights.

Could MLB’s acquisition rules change?

Yes. The Major League collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, 2026, according to the MLBPA FAQ. Rules described above reflect the current framework, not a settled picture of any future agreement.

In a June 25, 2026 report, MLB described proposals that included a five-year reserve period for players age 30 or older, elimination of qualifying offers, an increase to the minimum salary, and a “cornerstone player” advantage. MLB said the proposed age-related change would begin in the offseason after the 2027 season if adopted. These are proposals, not rules in force; see MLB’s report on the CBA proposal.

On September 28, 2026, the Associated Press reported that management expected a lockout and that it could stop trades and free-agent signings. That was a report about a possible future disruption, not confirmation that a lockout had begun. Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón, quoted in the report, said: “We won’t play. I’m going to be frank with you.” His remark expressed a player’s position, not an official rule or agreement. The AP report is available at its September 28 labor-negotiation story.
