ML4W OS is a Hyprland-centered desktop experience that you can try from a Live ISO or install as a desktop configuration on certain existing Linux distributions. It is not one single installation path: the project presents both an operating-system-and-dotfiles experience and shell installers for supported host distributions. Its Live ISO installer for putting ML4W OS on a drive is explicitly marked beta.
What ML4W OS is
ML4W describes the project as an “advanced, full-featured operating system and dotfiles configuration based on the dynamic tiling window manager Hyprland.” Hyprland is the center of the desktop: it arranges application windows in a dynamic tiling layout, while ML4W supplies a coordinated configuration and graphical tools for common settings. The project emphasizes adaptive Material themes, light and dark modes, and customization through its Welcome and Settings apps. ML4W project website
Think of ML4W as a way to get a preconfigured Hyprland desktop rather than as a guarantee of a uniform, standalone Arch-derived installation. The project offers a Live ISO, and it also documents installation scripts that add its configuration to an existing Linux distribution. Which route you choose changes what is installed and what risks apply.
What comes in the desktop
The documented setup combines window management with everyday applications and utilities. The exact inventory can change between releases; this is the set described in the project overview, not a promise that every component is mandatory or unchanged. ML4W project overview

Choose an installation path

Install into an existing Linux distribution
The documentation provides stable and rolling shell installer scripts, with setup instructions for Arch Linux (recommended), Fedora, and openSUSE Tumbleweed. The overview also names EndeavourOS, Manjaro, Garuda, Arco, and CachyOS among tested distributions. Check the current official support and tested lists before proceeding, since these can change and an unlisted distribution is not thereby guaranteed to work. ML4W warns: “Every Linux distribution and setup can be different. Before running a script, follow the project’s instruction to back up your existing ~/.config folder and dotfiles. The current installer places its dotfiles under ~/.mydotfiles and creates symlinks into ~/.config, so existing settings may be affected.

Try the Live ISO without installing it
The Live ISO guide covers booting on real hardware and trying the environment in a KVM/QEMU virtual machine. For a physical computer, create bootable media on a USB flash drive; the guide names Balena Etcher and Rufus as examples. It does not establish a required drive capacity, speed, or brand. For the guide’s VM walkthrough, the example configuration uses UEFI, 3D acceleration, and at least 10 GB of virtual disk space. These are instructions for that VM route, not universal minimum hardware requirements for ML4W OS.

Install the Live ISO to a drive
The project labels this installation route beta. Its installer formats the drive you select, destroying the data on that drive, and uses Btrfs with standard subvolumes compatible with snapshot tools such as snapper or Timeshift. Do not select a drive containing data you need; make a separate backup before starting. The documented filesystem and snapshot compatibility do not remove the risk of data loss. How much can you customize?
The Welcome and Settings apps provide graphical controls for common changes. According to the customization documentation, Settings covers Waybar modules and workspaces, appearance and animations, wallpaper behavior, default applications, idle times, monitors, keybindings, and environment configuration. For further changes, HyprMod is optional, and users can add Waybar themes. The project also identifies ~/.config/hypr/conf/custom.conf as a place for custom Hyprland configuration that can be restored during an update. That gives experienced users a route to keep personal settings separate, but it does not remove the need to understand how Hyprland configuration works.
Who should choose ML4W?
- Consider it if you want a ready-configured Hyprland desktop, prefer graphical controls for common adjustments, and are comfortable checking host-distribution compatibility.
- Try the Live ISO first if you want to evaluate the desktop before changing an existing system.
- Pause before the disk installer if you need a stable, non-beta installation path or cannot risk erasing the selected drive.
- Expect more hands-on work if you plan extensive Hyprland changes, use an unlisted distribution, or want to maintain the setup independently.
Compared with assembling a Hyprland setup yourself, ML4W offers a prebuilt configuration and supporting apps; in exchange, you inherit its choices and need to maintain compatibility with the host distribution and project updates.
