To improve contrast and reduce visible halos on a Mini LED TV, start with its Local Dimming or Local Contrast setting. Compare the available levels using the kind of dark scenes you watch, then keep the strongest setting that preserves small highlights and subtitles. No setting can guarantee that blooming will disappear: zone size and the TV’s processing also affect the result.
Find the local dimming control
Mini LED TVs divide their backlight into areas that can be brightened or dimmed independently. Local dimming controls how strongly the TV adjusts those areas, making it the setting most directly connected to both dark-scene contrast and halos around bright objects on a dark background.
The label and menu location vary by manufacturer, model, region, picture mode, input, and signal format. TCL documentation uses names such as Local Contrast and Peak Luminance; the cited Samsung manual calls its control Local Dimming. Check the manual for your exact model and region rather than assuming another TV’s instructions apply.
Choose a starting picture mode
Start with Movie, Filmmaker, or the closest accurate picture mode your TV offers. These modes can provide a more restrained baseline than vivid or dynamic modes, but their appearance and available controls differ by model. In Samsung’s manual, Movie is described as suited to dark-room viewing, while Filmmaker mode may look darker; those are examples for that manufacturer, not universal rules.

Make adjustments while the relevant content is playing. A setting available for SDR may not behave the same way, or be available, for HDR or Dolby Vision. Check each format and input you use instead of assuming one adjustment carries over.
Compare local dimming levels on real content
- Choose a familiar dark scene. Use a scene with both dark areas and bright details, such as a night sky, a dimly lit room, or white subtitles over a dark image.
- Compare the available levels. Depending on the TV, choices might include Off, Normal, and High, or Low, Standard, and High. These labels and their effects are model-specific.
- Look for the tradeoff. Stronger local dimming may deepen blacks and improve overall contrast, but it can also dim tiny bright objects or subtitles. TCL notes that “very small light-emitting objects like a mouse may have reduced brightness as they are smaller than a single dimming zone” in its MiniLED Local Dimming Adjustment Options guidance.
- Keep the best balance. If a stronger level improves the scene without hiding details you care about, use it. If stars, small reflections, or subtitles become noticeably dim, step down one level and compare again.
Test more than one scene. A setting that looks good on a large bright object may behave differently with scattered stars or thin subtitles. There is no single winning level across Mini LED models or across all content.

Adjust brightness without sacrificing shadow detail
Overall backlight or peak brightness is separate from local dimming. Set it for your room lighting and viewing comfort; changing it may affect how bright the image appears, but it is not a reliable way to remove halos. Avoid lowering the TV’s black-level or brightness control indiscriminately to conceal blooming, because that can crush shadow detail and make dark parts of the image harder to see.
Menu terms are not interchangeable. Samsung’s manual treats brightness, contrast, and shadow detail as distinct controls. Consult your model’s manual before changing them, and judge dark details as well as black areas when comparing adjustments.

Treat HDR and contrast processing as separate decisions
Contrast Enhancer, Dynamic Contrast, HDR Tone Mapping, and Peak Brightness are separate settings, not alternate names for local dimming. They can change the picture’s processing or brightness, so test them one at a time if you choose to experiment. For HDR, preserve the TV’s intended tone mapping unless documentation or a measured guide for your exact model supports changing it.
TCL’s support guidance and Samsung’s manual illustrate why settings recipes do not transfer cleanly: manufacturers use different labels and choices, and the effect depends on the TV and the signal being shown. Use the model-specific manual for control meanings and availability rather than copying numeric settings from another screen.

Know what settings cannot fix
Blooming can remain even after sensible adjustments. Local dimming works in backlight zones rather than independently controlling every pixel, and both zone size and the TV’s processing influence how precisely it can manage bright objects beside dark areas. Turning a control to an extreme is not a guaranteed cure; it may instead dim small highlights or reduce other image detail.
A TV calibration test-pattern disc, such as the optional Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark, can help make picture adjustments more repeatable. It does not eliminate hardware or processing limits, and it is not required to compare local dimming on ordinary content.
