Minecraft’s Ice Caves biome is available to try in experimental builds, including Bedrock Preview 26.60.29—but Mojang’s sources do not confirm that it has reached the standard release. The new cave biome generates beneath colder Overworld biomes and adds Packed Ice, Calcite, icicles, Ice Crystals, and a hostile Frostbite variant. Here’s what the preview includes and how to test it without risking your main world.

What are the new Ice Caves in Minecraft?

Ice Caves are a new cave biome revealed for an upcoming Minecraft game drop. Mojang describes them as generating beneath colder biomes in the Overworld. The detailed features below come from the experimental Bedrock Preview changelog, so they may change before a standard release.

The main materials are Packed Ice and Calcite. Icicles hang from ceilings and can also form in large clusters on the ground and ceiling; snow patches may appear. Ores generate in pockets of Stone and Deepslate. Dirt, Granite, and Glow Lichen do not generate in the biome. Ice Caves appear beneath low-temperature biomes, so look underground below colder Overworld areas rather than in warm regions. Mojang has not provided a guaranteed surface landmark or exact depth in the cited preview notes.

Ice Crystals provide light

Ice Crystals are crystal-like blocks resembling Amethyst Clusters. In Bedrock Preview, they can generate on Packed Ice, emit light, and be placed in any direction. They break if the block supporting them is removed. Because Glow Lichen does not generate in Ice Caves, the crystals are the biome’s only stated light source. Mojang notes that the crystals are smaller than intended in this preview, so their appearance may change.

What mobs and combat changes are in the preview?

Frostbites and Ice Balls

Frostbite is a new zombie variant that can spawn in cold or icy biomes alongside the mobs normally found in caves. It attacks with melee strikes that apply the Freezing effect and throws Ice Balls at a distance. The preview changelog says an Ice Ball breaks on impact and deals 4 damage to entities, with damage scaling down as its velocity decreases.

Frostbites are immune to freezing and are not slowed by the Freezing effect or Powder Snow. Zombies and Husks that are inside Powder Snow transform into Frostbites, according to the experimental notes.

Experimental freezing mechanics

The preview says mobs vulnerable to freezing take five times the damage from it. It also describes using Ice Balls to brew Lingering Potion, Splashing Potion, and Potion of Freezing, and making an Arrow of Freezing by dipping arrows into a cauldron filled with Potion of Freezing. These are preview mechanics, not confirmed final-release behavior.

How to test the new features

Mojang’s testing guide gives different routes for Java and Bedrock. Preview builds are optional; Realms is another option for eligible subscribers, not a requirement for access.

Edition Testing route Where to enable it
Java Edition Snapshots Minecraft Launcher, Installations tab
Bedrock Edition Preview on Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS; Beta on Android Use the Preview option on the listed platforms; Android players use Beta via Google Play
  1. Protect your worlds first. Make a backup or use a different save folder before opening a testing build. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds.
  2. For Java, enable snapshots. Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the Installations tab to access snapshot installations.
  3. For Bedrock, use Preview or Beta for your platform. Mojang’s guide specifies Preview on Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS, and Beta on Android through Google Play. Platform steps and availability can vary; consult Mojang’s current localized instructions for your region.
  4. Load a separate test world. Explore underground below colder Overworld biomes to look for Ice Caves. Generation is experimental, so finding one is not guaranteed in every location or world.

Mojang also says eligible players with an active Realms subscription can create a free testing Realm. This is an optional testing route, not a prerequisite for trying snapshots or Preview/Beta.

Is the Ice Caves biome in the regular Minecraft release?

The sources establish experimental access, not standard-release availability. Mojang’s September 30, 2026 Bedrock Preview changelog documents the feature in Preview 26.60.29, while its Minecraft Live September 2026 recap presents Ice Caves as part of an upcoming game drop. Neither source confirms a final general-release date or guarantees that the preview mechanics will remain unchanged.
