For most Survival players, the best armor setup is Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on every piece; Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I on the helmet; Feather Falling IV and Depth Strider III on the boots. Add Soul Speed III for regular Nether travel, Swift Sneak III for crouch-heavy exploration or building, and Thorns III only when you accept faster durability loss. Replace Protection with Fire, Blast, or Projectile Protection when a specific hazard dominates your play.

The right choice depends on what threatens you. An ocean monument trip, Nether expedition, ancient-city search, PvP fight, and ordinary cave run do not reward exactly the same armor. This guide explains all 16 useful and harmful enchantments, their maximum levels, slot restrictions, conflicts, and practical armor sets for each situation.

What armor enchantments do in Minecraft

Enchantments are properties applied to items that improve an existing ability or add a new one. Armor enchantments fall into five useful groups: protection against damage, movement and environmental mobility, underwater utility, durability and repair, and curses that create drawbacks.

Maximum levels are game-defined rather than performance benchmarks. The Bedrock command reference documents the levels listed below, while Minecraft Wiki material often describes Java and Survival behavior. Menus, mechanics, and compatibility can vary by edition and version, so check the rules of the world you play in before copying a build exactly.

The best all-purpose armor loadout

For a general Survival world, enchant each item as follows:

Armor piece Recommended enchantments Why it belongs there
Helmet Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Unbreaking III, Mending I Broad damage coverage, longer underwater breathing, and normal underwater mining speed
Chestplate Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I The chestplate supplies the largest share of ordinary armor protection, so general protection and durability are the priorities
Leggings Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I Reliable mixed-threat protection; add Swift Sneak for crouch-heavy play
Boots Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III, Mending I Fall safety and faster underwater movement cover common travel hazards

Put Soul Speed III on the boots if you routinely cross soul sand or soul soil in the Nether. Thorns III is an optional addition to any armor piece when reflected damage matters more to you than maximum time between repairs.

The 16 best Minecraft armor enchantments

1. Protection IV

Protection IV is the best default choice when you face a mixture of melee hits, falls, fire, explosions, and other ordinary threats. It provides broad damage reduction instead of specializing in one source, which makes it the most dependable enchantment for a single permanent set.

Use Protection on all four pieces for an all-purpose build. It is not a reason to ignore Feather Falling, because boots need that separate fall-damage enchantment for reliable protection during cave, End, and elytra travel.

2. Fire Protection IV

Fire Protection IV is the specialist choice for lava, fire, and repeated burning hazards. It is particularly useful for Nether work, lava-cave mining, and situations where fire damage is a larger risk than ordinary attacks.

Choose it instead of Protection on the pieces you want specialized; do not treat it as a universal upgrade. A Nether-focused set can use Fire Protection, while a general set remains better served by Protection.

3. Blast Protection IV

Blast Protection IV targets explosions from creepers, TNT, beds used in the Nether, and similar hazards. It is valuable when your activity deliberately creates explosions or when you are building and fighting in places where creepers are common.

Use it as a threat-specific replacement for Protection. A mixed exploration set normally gains more from broad Protection unless explosions are the main danger.

4. Projectile Protection IV

Projectile Protection IV is designed for arrows and other projectiles. Skeletons, pillagers, ghasts, and projectile-heavy fights are the clearest reasons to equip it.

It makes sense for a raid or ranged-combat expedition, but it gives up the broad coverage of Protection. Keep the specialized pieces in a separate kit if your world regularly alternates between melee, Nether, and ranged threats.

5. Feather Falling IV

Feather Falling IV is a boots-only enchantment that reduces fall damage. It has unusually high value because falls are common during cave exploration, End travel, construction, and elytra landings.

It does not prevent every dangerous landing, so keep safe movement habits and a recovery plan. For a permanent pair of boots, Feather Falling IV is generally more useful than using the slot for a niche mobility effect.

6. Respiration III

Respiration III is helmet-only and extends the time you can remain underwater before drowning. It is useful for ocean exploration, monument preparation, underwater construction, and recovering items in water.

Respiration changes your breathing window; it does not replace a water-breathing potion or eliminate the need to watch your air supply during long operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Aqua Affinity I

Aqua Affinity I is helmet-only and improves mining speed underwater. Without it, underwater block breaking is slow enough to make monument rooms and submerged construction frustrating.

Pair it with Respiration III for an ocean-ready helmet. Aqua Affinity affects mining, while Respiration affects breathing, so they solve different problems and are complementary.

8. Depth Strider III

Depth Strider III is boots-only and improves movement through water. It makes rivers, oceans, flooded caves, and monument interiors much easier to navigate.

Depth Strider is the better general travel choice when you expect to swim. Its direct conflict with Frost Walker means you must decide whether you want underwater speed or frozen-water crossings.

9. Frost Walker II

Frost Walker II freezes water beneath the wearer while walking, creating a temporary ice path. It is useful for crossing broad oceans, rivers, and shallow waterways without swimming or building bridges.

Frost Walker and Depth Strider are mutually exclusive in Survival. Frost Walker is therefore a route-planning choice, not an extra layer on top of underwater movement. It can also change how you interact with farms, docks, and other water builds, so use a dedicated pair of boots if that behavior would be inconvenient.

10. Soul Speed III

Soul Speed III increases movement speed on soul sand and soul soil. Those blocks are common on Nether routes, where slow movement and hostile terrain make travel dangerous.

It is a Nether-travel enchantment rather than a universal movement upgrade. Keep in mind that repeated use on soul terrain creates separate durability considerations, making Unbreaking III and Mending I especially important on Soul Speed boots.

11. Swift Sneak III

Swift Sneak III is leggings-only and lets you move faster while crouching. It is especially useful in ancient cities, where careful movement matters, and during detailed building that requires frequent edge-safe placement.

Swift Sneak improves crouched movement; it does not make you immune to detection or remove the need to manage vibrations and hostile mobs. Add it to leggings when stealthy exploration or precision building is a regular part of your play.

12. Thorns III

Thorns III can damage an attacker when they hit you. It is attractive when you fight many mobs at close range and want passive retaliation while concentrating on movement or your own attacks.

The trade-off is durability pressure: repeated incoming hits can wear armor faster. Use Thorns on a maintained combat set when the extra damage is worth more frequent repairs, or leave it off a long-duration exploration set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Unbreaking III

Unbreaking III reduces durability loss and belongs on armor you intend to keep. It does not make an item indestructible, but it stretches the useful life of every piece and reduces how often you must replace or repair it.

Apply it to all four pieces, including specialized boots and helmets. Its value increases when the armor also carries Soul Speed, Thorns, or other effects that encourage frequent use.

14. Mending I

Mending I repairs equipped armor when you collect experience. It turns experience gain into maintenance, allowing a well-used set to remain serviceable instead of being discarded when its durability falls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wear the damaged piece while collecting experience so the repair can reach it. Mending works naturally with Unbreaking III: Unbreaking slows durability loss, while Mending converts experience into repairs.

15. Curse of Binding I

Curse of Binding I prevents equipped armor from being removed until the item breaks or the player dies. That can turn an ordinary piece into a trap, especially if it is cursed during an exploration trip or placed on a player without consent.

Do not seek Curse of Binding for permanent gear. Inspect enchanted loot before equipping it, and avoid putting unknown cursed armor on in situations where you cannot safely die or wait for it to break.

16. Curse of Vanishing I

Curse of Vanishing I makes the item disappear when its wearer dies instead of dropping for recovery. It offers no survival benefit and is particularly costly on rare or heavily enchanted equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid it on valuable armor. If cursed gear is the only option available, treat it as temporary equipment and do not carry irreplaceable resources while wearing it.

Protection, Fire, Blast, or Projectile: which should you choose?

The four Protection-family enchantments answer different threat profiles. They are best compared by the damage source you expect, not by a universal ranking.

Primary danger Best specialist Typical examples When general Protection is preferable
Mixed damage Protection IV Caves, ordinary travel, varied Survival play Almost always, when no single hazard dominates
Fire and lava Fire Protection IV Nether routes, lava pools, fire-heavy areas When melee, falls, and explosions remain equally likely
Explosions Blast Protection IV Creepers, TNT, Nether beds When explosions are occasional rather than central to the activity
Arrows and other projectiles Projectile Protection IV Skeletons, pillagers, ghasts, ranged fights When close combat and environmental damage are also common

Because these enchantments serve competing protection roles, plan a specialized kit rather than trying to force every type onto the same armor. Keep Protection IV on your permanent set and create a hazard-focused replacement only when the activity justifies it.

Depth Strider or Frost Walker?

Choose Depth Strider III if you want to swim faster and move normally through underwater terrain. It is the practical default for ocean monuments, flooded caves, rivers, and mixed travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Frost Walker II if your main goal is crossing water from the surface. It creates temporary ice beneath your feet, so you can walk across a lake or ocean without swimming. The two enchantments are mutually exclusive in Survival; one pair of boots cannot provide both behaviors.

Many players keep two pairs: Depth Strider boots for underwater work and Frost Walker boots for long surface crossings. That approach avoids repeatedly rebuilding your main armor and lets you select movement behavior for the route ahead.

Best enchantments for each armor slot

Helmet

Use Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. This combination covers ordinary damage, breathing time, underwater mining, and maintenance. Add Thorns III only if you accept the extra wear caused by retaliation damage.

Chestplate

Use Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I for general Survival. The chestplate has no special underwater or movement enchantment in this set, so it is the easiest place to substitute Fire, Blast, or Projectile Protection for a dedicated hazard build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leggings

Use Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Add Swift Sneak III for ancient-city exploration, crouch-heavy building, or any activity where moving while sneaking is routine. Thorns III remains optional for the same durability reason as on other pieces.

Boots

Use Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I for general travel. Replace Depth Strider III with Frost Walker II when frozen-water crossings are more useful than swimming speed. Add Soul Speed III to a pair used for Nether routes, and maintain those boots carefully.

Specialized armor sets worth keeping

Nether travel set

  • Use Fire Protection IV where lava and fire are persistent hazards.
  • Keep Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on the boots.
  • Add Soul Speed III to boots that regularly cross soul sand or soul soil.
  • Consider a spare pair with general Protection if the same trip includes ordinary combat and dangerous drops.

Ocean monument or underwater set

  • Use Protection IV unless a different hazard is clearly dominant.
  • Put Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I on the helmet.
  • Use Depth Strider III on the boots for efficient underwater movement.
  • Keep Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I so the set remains useful outside the monument.

Ancient-city and stealth-exploration set

  • Use Protection IV for mixed hazards.
  • Add Swift Sneak III to leggings for faster crouched movement.
  • Keep Feather Falling IV on boots because vertical drops remain dangerous even when you are moving quietly.
  • Leave Thorns off if avoiding unnecessary durability loss is more important than passive damage.

Ranged-combat or raid set

  • Use Projectile Protection IV when arrows and other projectiles are the main threat.
  • Retain Unbreaking III and Mending I on every piece.
  • Choose Protection IV instead if melee mobs and environmental damage are equally common.

Durability, repair, and anvil planning

Unbreaking III and Mending I solve different maintenance problems and are strongest together. Unbreaking reduces how quickly durability is consumed; Mending repairs equipped items with experience. Neither enchantment removes the need to monitor durability, especially on Thorns armor or Soul Speed boots that see frequent contact with hazardous terrain.

When combining books and armor at an anvil, the order of operations affects experience cost. A high-end set can therefore require planning rather than simply applying every book in an arbitrary sequence. The commonly shown fully enchanted example—Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Soul Speed III, and Thorns III—is best treated as an advanced target, not a requirement for every player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Putting every protection type on one piece: Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection, and Projectile Protection are competing choices for a Survival set. Pick the broad or specialized coverage that matches the activity.
  • Choosing Frost Walker without considering water work: Frost Walker conflicts with Depth Strider, so it is inconvenient for players who regularly swim or mine underwater.
  • Skipping Feather Falling: Boots without Feather Falling are vulnerable to the ordinary drops encountered in caves, the End, and construction.
  • Adding Thorns automatically: Retaliation damage is useful, but the associated durability pressure can be undesirable on a long-term exploration set.
  • Equipping unidentified loot: Curse of Binding can lock armor on, and Curse of Vanishing can erase it on death. Inspect a piece before wearing it.
  • Using specialized armor everywhere: A Nether or raid set may be excellent for one activity and worse for general travel. Keep a Protection-based set as your default unless storage is limited.
  • Ignoring edition differences: Bedrock command documentation and Java-oriented wiki descriptions are not interchangeable proof that every mechanic behaves identically. Identify your edition and version when checking a level or incompatibility.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the activity: ordinary Survival, Nether travel, underwater work, stealth exploration, building, raids, or ranged combat.
  2. Choose Protection IV for mixed threats, or replace it with Fire, Blast, or Projectile Protection when one damage source clearly dominates.
  3. Put Unbreaking III and Mending I on every piece you expect to keep.
  4. Finish the helmet with Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I if water is part of your world.
  5. Finish the boots with Feather Falling IV, then choose Depth Strider III for swimming or Frost Walker II for surface water crossings.
  6. Add Swift Sneak III to leggings for crouch-heavy play and Soul Speed III to Nether boots.
  7. Decide deliberately whether Thorns III’s extra damage is worth its durability cost.
  8. Reject Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing on permanent gear.

How to build a long-term collection

Start with one Protection IV set carrying Unbreaking III and Mending I. Upgrade the helmet with Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I, then add Feather Falling IV and Depth Strider III to the boots. This gives the largest benefit for ordinary exploration without requiring multiple inventories of armor.

Once resources allow, keep specialized boots and replacement protection pieces rather than rebuilding the entire collection for every trip. A Frost Walker pair, Soul Speed Nether pair, and hazard-focused Protection pair cover most changes in activity while preserving your general set.

Use Thorns selectively and label chests by purpose. Separating ordinary, underwater, Nether, and stealth equipment makes the incompatibility between Depth Strider and Frost Walker an intentional choice instead of an accidental loss of a useful enchantment.
