Milwaukee says every M18 battery is compatible with M18 tools and M18 chargers. M18 and M12 are separate systems, so an M18 battery is not for an M12 tool. Within M18, choose a pack family—CP, XC, or HD—for its size, weight, power, and runtime characteristics, not because it uses a different tool-compatibility standard.
Which batteries work with Milwaukee M18 tools?
Milwaukee Tool’s M18 system FAQ states: “All M18™ Batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” That system-level guidance covers the M18 battery families described below; Milwaukee does not present CP, XC, and HD as separate compatibility standards.
The guidance is not a model-by-model audit of every legacy or specialist tool. If you have an unusual older tool, check its manual or ask Milwaukee support rather than assuming a specific exception—or that one has been ruled out.
What do CP, XC, and HD mean?
These labels describe pack size and intended use. They help you choose how a compatible battery feels and performs in a job; they do not change the basic M18-to-M18 fit rule.

Does a more powerful or different-sized M18 battery fit older M18 tools?
Milwaukee says its REDLINK intelligence and battery electronics allow M18 batteries to be used with M18 tools. The company gives the FORGE XC6.0 as an example: it describes the pack as delivering HD12.0 power in a smaller, lighter design, while clarifying that it does not provide the HD12.0’s same runtime. That comparison is Milwaukee’s product claim, not an independent test.

As another compact-pack example, Milwaukee says its HIGH OUTPUT CP3.0 provides 50% more power and runs 50% cooler than standard M18 REDLITHIUM CP packs, and that it is compatible with all M18 solutions. Those percentages are Milwaukee’s stated comparisons, not independent measurements.
Do not use amp-hours (Ah) alone to predict exact runtime. Runtime depends on the tool and how it is used; the available product comparisons do not establish a universal runtime calculation for every M18 tool.

Which M18 battery should you choose?
- Prioritize low weight and a compact tool? Start with CP.
- Want a balance of size, weight, power, and runtime? Consider XC.
- Doing extended, high-demand work? Consider HD, accepting its larger size.
For a concrete XC example, Milwaukee lists the M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE XC6.0, model 48-11-1861, as compatible with M18 tools. The company says it is compatible with 300+ M18 tools; that is Milwaukee’s product-page figure, not an independently verified count. Its older XC 3.0 listing is marked no longer available, so do not assume that specific model is currently sold.
Can you charge M18 batteries with any charger?
Milwaukee says authentic M18 batteries should be charged with Milwaukee M18 chargers and advises against third-party batteries or chargers. Follow the battery and charger instructions for your particular models rather than choosing a charger based on the M18 label alone.

Charge-time figures depend on the battery, charger, and conditions. Milwaukee’s system FAQ reports a FORGE XC6.0 charge time of 25 minutes to full and 15 minutes to 80% using the M18 Super Charger, based on room-temperature testing; actual results may vary. Separately, Milwaukee’s FORGE XC6.0 page reports 15 minutes to 80% using the M18 Dual Bay Simultaneous Super Charger. These are manufacturer figures for the named charger and conditions, not a promise for every M18 battery or charger.
If you need to charge multiple packs or use both battery systems, Milwaukee lists the M18/M12 Four Bay Simultaneous Super Charger, model 48-59-1818, as supporting all M18 and M12 batteries and simultaneous charging of four packs.
Is an M18 battery compatible with an M12 tool?
No. M12 is a separate Milwaukee battery system: Milwaukee says M12 batteries work with M12 tools and chargers. Match the battery and tool platform—M18 to M18, M12 to M12—instead of treating the two labels as interchangeable.
