Installed on Tumamoc Hill in Tucson, it is designed to expose light-sensitive rose madder pigment to the landscape for 1,000 years. The goal is an image shaped by the view and its changes over time—not a photograph already made or a guaranteed archive.
How can a camera take 1,000 years to make a photograph?
Instead of recording light electronically or exposing ordinary film in a short burst, the Millennium Camera uses sunlight to slowly fade pigment. A tiny aperture admits light, and the pigment is expected to fade most in the areas receiving the strongest illumination. Over a very long exposure, the differing degrees of fading are intended to form a positive image.
The University of Arizona describes the Tucson device as a pin-sized hole in a thin sheet of 24-karat gold, aimed into a small copper cylinder. Inside, the light reaches a surface coated with many thin layers of rose madder, an oil-paint pigment. The technique is part of Keats’s broader Deep Time Photography practice, in which a pinhole directs light onto colored pigment that gradually fades to form an image. University of Arizona News explains the camera’s construction and intended process; the Desert Laboratory describes the Deep Time Photography technique.
The intended result would record more than a single moment. Because the exposure is meant to continue as the landscape changes, the image could accumulate traces of changes to the view, including development or climate-related change. That is the artistic concept, not a calibrated measurement of environmental conditions.

Why make a camera that takes so long?
The project has two connected purposes: to leave an image that people in the future might recover, and to encourage people today to think beyond short planning horizons. A millennium is long enough that the landscape, the city, and the people who encounter the camera may change profoundly. The device makes that span tangible by turning an ordinary view into the subject of an exposure that outlasts its makers.
The camera sits beside a bench on Tumamoc Hill, facing west over Tucson’s Star Pass neighborhood. The University of Arizona’s Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill and its College of Fine Arts are associated with the installation. Its public setting lets hikers come across the camera and consider what future generations might see.

Keats has framed the work as an invitation to think and talk, not as a directive about how Tucson should grow. He told University of Arizona News that the camera is “set there to invite us to ask questions and to enter into conversation and invite the perspective of future generations in the sense that they’re in our minds.” The university’s January 8, 2024 account of the project also records his explanation of the artwork’s purpose.
Has the Millennium Camera already taken the photograph?
No completed thousand-year image is documented. The 1,000 years describes the project’s intended exposure, and the eventual photograph is a hoped-for outcome. Keats has described the pigment’s expected fading rate as an educated guess, rather than a proven rate established by a thousand-year test.

This smart capture mode conserves storage space and ensures you gather evidence of only the relevant events, perfect for discreet property security and monitoring.
The camera also has to remain intact and in place for the work to succeed. Keats noted that natural forces or human decisions could damage it or remove it, among other reasons the project might fail. “One thousand years is a long time and there are so many reasons why this might not work,” he said. Opening it early would interrupt the premise: “If we open in the interim, then it diminishes the imagining that we need to be doing.” Those remarks are reported by University of Arizona News.
For now, the documented facts are the design, materials, location, and intended duration—not a completed exposure, a measured success probability, or a guaranteed archival result. The project should be understood as experimental art rather than a proven method of preserving a landscape for future people.

- ★The Recesky DIY Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) Camera is a beautiful DIY (Do-It-Yourself) camera that represents everything that is lomo. We ly love the idea of a camera that not only takes great photos, but is also one that you get to build yourself!
- ★ Going through the process of assembling the camera is not only a joy in itself, but allows you to ultimately understand the exact function that every part ultimately plays in order to capture a photo - it truly is an amazing experience!
- ★The TLR stands for Twin Lens Reflex. There are two lenses - one for capturing the photo onto film, and the other that acts as as a viewfinder for framing the photo. The main advantage of this is that you can compose your shots from waist height!
- ★Quick shutters, small apertures, fast subjects.
- ★The LOMO Film Camera upload your masterpiece to lomography.
How this project relates to Keats’s earlier work
The Tucson installation is one example of Keats’s Deep Time Photography. A separate project focused on Tempe was announced by Arizona State University in 2015. That announcement described a public workshop where participants could build pinhole cameras, including a design intended for a 100-year exposure. The Tempe project is distinct from the Millennium Camera on Tumamoc Hill; Arizona State University’s announcement describes the Tempe work and workshop.
