Short answer: Microsoft encrypts Recall snapshots and requires Windows Hello to open them, but a 2026 proof-of-concept report says malware already running as the signed-in user can wait for a legitimate unlock and read the decrypted screenshots, OCR text, and metadata delivered to Recall’s AIXHost.exe rendering process. Microsoft says this behavior follows the intended security model and is not a vulnerability. If that exposure is unacceptable, turn off snapshot saving or disable Recall by policy.
What Windows Recall records
Recall periodically takes screen snapshots when displayed content changes. It processes the images and text locally so you can search a personal timeline using natural-language queries. The captured material can therefore include documents, web pages, messages, application windows and other content visible on the screen while snapshots are being taken.
Local storage and indexing
Microsoft describes snapshots and their associated vector-database information as local data. Recall analyzes the images and text on the device rather than sending the timeline to a remote service for ordinary searching.
Protections Microsoft describes
Opening the timeline requires Windows Hello. Microsoft says encryption keys are protected by the device’s Trusted Platform Module and tied to the user’s Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security identity. It also says Recall operations run inside a Virtualization-based Security (VBS) Enclave. A September 27, 2024 architecture update said the design was intended to stop “latent malware” from riding along with a user authentication.

What the 2026 TotalRecall Reloaded report claims
Security researcher Alexander Hagenah’s TotalRecall Reloaded, covered by Computerworld on April 16, 2026, does not claim to decrypt Recall’s database or defeat its cryptography. The reported technique targets the normal Windows process that renders Recall results after authentication: AIXHost.exe.
The reported attack path
- Malware runs in the same Windows user context as the person using the computer. The reports say administrator rights, a kernel exploit and a break of the encrypted database are not required.
- The malware remains quiet and waits for the user to authenticate to Recall with Windows Hello.
- After the legitimate authorization, Recall supplies readable content to
AIXHost.exeso the interface can display it. - The malware monitors or injects into that ordinary user-level process and extracts the material delivered to it.
What could be obtained
The Verge’s account says the proof of concept can collect screenshots, OCR text and other metadata. It also reports that the tool can retrieve a recently cached screenshot or wipe capture history without asking the user for another Windows Hello prompt. Windows Central described the design concern as a protected “vault” handing decrypted content to a less-protected “delivery truck” and reported that DLL injection into AIXHost.exe can be performed without administrator privileges.

Why this is different from a cryptographic break
Encryption protects the stored database while it is locked. Recall must still decrypt and pass information to a user-interface process after the user is authorized. The reported risk is that malware already operating in that user session can ride the authorized session and observe the data at that handoff. It is therefore a process-boundary and session-riding issue, not evidence that an attacker can simply open the encrypted files without authentication.
Microsoft’s position
Microsoft investigated Hagenah’s disclosure and classified it as not a vulnerability. David Weston, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Security, said: “After careful investigation, we determined that the access patterns demonstrated are consistent with intended protections and existing controls, and do not represent a bypass of a security boundary or unauthorized access to data.”

Microsoft’s response also says Recall authorization has a timeout and anti-hammering protection intended to limit malicious queries. Hagenah disputes whether those controls stop repeated polling and argues that the ordinary rendering process sits outside the enclave boundary. The available reporting does not establish a complete test matrix across every Windows build, so the findings should not be treated as a demonstrated exploit on every installation.
Keep Recall enabled or turn it off?
The choice depends on whether searchable history is worth retaining screen content that could be exposed to malware already running as you.

| Consideration | Keep Recall enabled | Disable or pause snapshot saving |
|---|---|---|
| Searchable history | Provides a local, natural-language timeline of captured activity. | New activity is not added while saving is off or paused. |
| Captured-content sensitivity | Visible screen material, OCR text and related metadata remain part of the Recall history. | Reduces the amount of future history available to a same-user process. |
| Same-user malware exposure | Accepts the reported risk that malware can wait for an authorized session and inspect data sent to AIXHost.exe. |
Removes or reduces the future data source for that scenario, although it does not prove that every Windows build is immune to process injection. |
| Authentication and device security | Relies on Windows Hello, TPM-backed key protection and the device’s Windows security configuration. | Avoids using Recall’s protected timeline, while normal Windows Hello and device protections remain relevant to other data. |
| Administrative control | Organizations must accept and manage the feature’s data-collection trade-off. | Administrators can disable Recall availability or restrict its use through management policy. |
How to turn off or pause Recall snapshots
Consumer Windows settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security.
- Select Recall & snapshots.
- Turn Save snapshots off, or use the available pause control.
Microsoft’s support guidance identifies these controls as the way to stop or pause snapshot saving. The setting changes what Recall records going forward; the guidance supplied here does not establish that turning it off automatically removes every snapshot already stored, so review any separate deletion controls shown on your Windows build if removal is required.
Managed PCs
Microsoft’s management documentation says Recall is opt-in for saving snapshots and that enterprise administrators can disable its availability or restrict use through policy. Organizations that do not have a documented business need for a searchable visual history can disable the feature centrally, then enforce their normal endpoint and user-session protections.

What users should take from the reports
- Recall captures screen snapshots and indexes their text and images locally; it is broader than a conventional list of files.
- Microsoft’s encryption, Windows Hello, TPM-backed keys and VBS Enclave address protection of the stored data and the authorization flow.
- The reported extraction occurs after legitimate authentication by targeting the ordinary rendering process, not by cracking the encrypted database.
- The cited reports describe operation in the user context without administrator privileges, but they do not provide a prevalence figure or a version-by-version list of affected Windows builds.
- Microsoft considers the behavior consistent with intended protections, while the researcher considers the trust boundary too narrow.
If a searchable record of everything displayed on a work or personal screen would be too sensitive to expose to malware running under the same account, the practical decision is to disable or pause snapshot saving. If you keep Recall, treat the feature as a convenience that depends on the integrity of the entire signed-in Windows session, not only on encryption at rest.
