Microsoft’s collaborations with Quantinuum and Atom Computing are testing two hardware routes toward more reliable quantum computing. Microsoft supplies qubit virtualization and error-management software; Quantinuum contributes trapped-ion processors, while Atom Computing contributes neutral-atom systems. The 2024 announcements reported larger sets of entangled logical qubits and improved error rates, but they did not establish scientific quantum advantage or prove that a general-purpose quantum computer is ready for routine commercial workloads.
What Microsoft, Quantinuum and Atom Computing are building
A physical qubit is a hardware device that stores quantum information. A logical qubit encodes that information across multiple physical qubits and uses error-detection or error-correction methods to make the encoded state more reliable. Microsoft’s Qubit Virtualization overview states that “Logical qubit error rates must be below physical qubit error rates to be reliable, and thus useful.” Logical and physical qubits therefore are not interchangeable terms: creating more logical qubits generally consumes several physical qubits and substantial control software.
The collaborations combine Microsoft’s Azure Quantum software layer, qubit virtualization, cloud high-performance computing (HPC) and AI tools with different hardware architectures. Quantinuum uses trapped ions; Atom Computing uses neutral atoms. The reported experiments were announced at different times, used different processors and protocols, and should not be treated as a head-to-head benchmark.
Quantinuum: trapped-ion logical-qubit milestones
April 2024: four logical qubits
In an April 3, 2024 announcement, Quantinuum said its H2 processor had 32 physical qubits at that time. The joint team used 30 of them to create four logical qubits. Quantinuum reported a logical error rate 800 times lower than the corresponding physical error rate and said it ran 14,000 independent circuit instances without an error.

September 2024: 12 entangled logical qubits
By September 2024, Microsoft described an updated H2 system with 56 physical qubits. Microsoft reported creating and entangling 12 logical qubits in a cat state, also known as a Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state. For that experiment, the reported circuit error rate was 0.0011 for the logical qubits versus 0.024 for the corresponding physical qubits—a 22-fold improvement according to Microsoft.
Microsoft also reported five rounds of repeated error correction on eight logical qubits, including a fault-tolerant computation during the correction process. The eight-qubit circuit error rate was reported as 0.002, compared with 0.023 for the corresponding physical-qubit circuit, described by Microsoft as an 11-fold improvement.
Microsoft said its improved virtualization system tripled the number of logical qubits in less than six months while the physical-qubit count increased from 30 to 56. These comparisons describe the announced experiments and are not timeless performance records.

The Quantinuum chemistry demonstration—and what it did not prove
Microsoft’s September 2024 technical account described a hybrid workflow for a catalytic intermediate. HPC tools identified a chemically relevant active space and reaction pathways. Two logical qubits then ran a customized quantum algorithm, and the measurement results were combined with an AI model to estimate the active space’s ground-state energy.
Microsoft reported a 97% likelihood that the logical-qubit computation produced a better estimate than the comparable physical-qubit computation. That is a comparison within this workflow, not a demonstration that quantum hardware outperformed classical computation on a useful scientific task.
Microsoft explicitly cautioned: “Using qubits to solve this problem does not demonstrate scientific quantum advantage because the answer can be derived with classical computers.” Quantinuum’s InQuanto computational-chemistry package was described as integrated with Azure Quantum Elements and available through private preview at the time of that post; the announcement does not establish its present access terms.
Atom Computing: neutral atoms and loss-aware error handling
Twenty-four entangled logical qubits
In a November 19, 2024 technical post, Microsoft said it and Atom Computing created and entangled 24 logical qubits in a cat/GHZ state using neutral-atom hardware and Microsoft’s qubit-virtualization system.

The reported error rate depended on how atom loss was handled:
| Condition in the announced experiment | Reported logical error rate | Comparison reported by Microsoft |
|---|---|---|
| Errors and losses detected | 10.2% | Versus a 42% physical baseline; described as a 4.1-fold improvement |
| Errors and losses detected and corrected | 26.6% | Described as a 1.6-fold improvement over the physical error rate |
Because the two rows use different loss-handling conditions, the percentages should not be collapsed into one headline error rate.
Bernstein–Vazirani computations
Separately, Microsoft said the team created 28 logical qubits from 112 physical qubits and used them for successful computations based on the Bernstein–Vazirani algorithm. Microsoft reported a more accurate solution than the corresponding physical-qubit computation. This result is distinct from the 24-qubit entangled-state experiment.
How the two collaborations compare
| Aspect | Quantinuum collaboration | Atom Computing collaboration |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware approach | Trapped-ion H2 processor | Neutral-atom hardware |
| Highlighted logical-qubit experiment | 12 entangled logical qubits on a 56-physical-qubit H2 system | 24 entangled logical qubits in a cat/GHZ state |
| Error-management emphasis | Repeated error correction and computation during correction | Separate results for detecting loss and for detecting plus correcting loss |
| Other reported work | Hybrid chemistry workflow using quantum hardware, HPC and AI | 28 logical qubits from 112 physical qubits for Bernstein–Vazirani computations |
| Commercial framing | Azure Quantum integration and InQuanto chemistry software | Announced scientific-computing suite combining Atom hardware, Azure services, HPC and AI |
The 12- and 24-logical-qubit figures come from separate announcements, architectures and tests. A larger number in one announcement does not by itself establish that one platform is superior.

What Microsoft’s platform contributes
Microsoft presents Azure Quantum as the layer that connects partner hardware with software for qubit virtualization, error-management experiments and cloud access. Azure Quantum Elements adds HPC and AI capabilities intended to support scientific workflows such as chemistry and materials research.
Microsoft also described Atom Computing’s second-generation systems as having more than 1,200 physical qubits at announcement time. That is a company system description, not an independently verified current specification. Likewise, statements about being the most powerful system or setting a record should be understood as claims tied to the dated announcement unless independently confirmed.

There is no consumer Microsoft quantum computer to order like a laptop or workstation. The announcements describe cloud and enterprise-oriented services, partner hardware and scientific-computing offerings. They do not establish current orderability, delivery schedules, pricing, performance guarantees or unrestricted access.
Azure Quantum, Azure Quantum Elements, Quantinuum’s InQuanto and Atom Computing’s specialized systems are relevant to organizations with research or enterprise needs. Anyone evaluating them should check the providers’ current documentation and commercial terms rather than relying on 2024 announcement language.

Did Microsoft demonstrate quantum advantage?
No. The Quantinuum chemistry example showed an improved logical-versus-physical estimate within a hybrid experiment, but Microsoft expressly said the answer could also be derived with classical computers. The Quantinuum and Atom milestones demonstrate progress in logical-qubit creation, entanglement and error management; they do not prove a practical scientific or commercial quantum advantage.
What these milestones mean
The central achievement is movement from demonstrating isolated hardware qubits toward operating encoded logical qubits with measurable error suppression. Quantinuum’s results emphasized repeated correction and fault-tolerant activity on trapped ions. Atom’s results showed neutral-atom logical-qubit experiments in which atom loss had to be detected and, in one reported condition, corrected.
The remaining gap is substantial: useful fault-tolerant applications require reliable logical operations at much larger scale, together with efficient control, decoding and application algorithms. The 2024 announcements are credible indicators of progress when attributed to Microsoft, Quantinuum and Atom Computing, but they are milestones on that route rather than a finished quantum computer for ordinary buyers.
