Microsoft is moving WinUI toward open collaboration in phases, but public development is not yet the same as accepting community code. In an update dated August 27, 2026, the WinUI team said mainline development was taking place on GitHub, with Microsoft engineers submitting pull requests while the team tested its workflows. It had not announced that outside contributors could submit pull requests.
What Microsoft’s WinUI open-source plan involves
Microsoft’s July 31, 2025 announcement described a deliberate, phased transition rather than a switch that would immediately make every part of WinUI open and independently buildable. The team said WinUI has deep ties to Windows, including proprietary layers that cannot simply be published as-is. It also did not commit to a specific end date for completing all milestones.
The work was framed as a progression: make development more visible and synchronized, enable third-party local builds, expose tests and improve change validation, then move the team’s primary development process into the public repository. The plan’s practical aim is broader collaboration, but each step depends on engineering and process work.
“This isn’t a flip-the-switch moment, it’s a deliberate process.”

Microsoft described this period as a way to prove the contribution workflow and supporting systems end to end. The update did not announce a date for opening community pull requests; instead, the team said it would announce separately when it was ready to accept them.
| Milestone | Status in Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 update | What it means for developers |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 3 | Reported complete; tests were available. | More test and validation infrastructure was in place, but this alone did not authorize community code submissions. |
| Phase 4 | Underway; mainline development was taking place on GitHub. | Microsoft was using public pull requests to validate its workflow. The update did not say that outside pull requests were open. |
The August 27 update is the latest dated project-status milestone cited here; it should not be confused with the October 4, 2026 status date. The repository README also warns that code contributions are not yet accepted. For the latest permission and contribution instructions, check the WinUI repository and the official rollout discussion before acting.

Can developers contribute WinUI code on GitHub now?
Not according to Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 update. The existence of public branches and pull requests reflects Microsoft’s own development process; it does not mean community pull requests are being accepted. The team said Microsoft developers were submitting the pull requests during Phase 4 and that it would announce when community submissions could begin.
For developers who want to help before code contributions open, the discussion identifies documentation work, WinUI Gallery documentation and samples, and issue clarification or minimal reproductions as possible ways to assist. Because contribution rules can change, verify the repository’s current guidance before beginning.

Why opening WinUI takes more than publishing its repository
Microsoft’s stated technical obstacle is WinUI’s connection to proprietary Windows layers. Those dependencies mean the codebase cannot simply be released wholesale as-is. The team also described Phase 4 work involving the complexity and modernization of the XAML compiler, as well as the validation, documentation, release, and contribution processes around the code.
These explanations describe work in progress; they are not a permanent declaration that a particular component will never be opened. The staged approach lets Microsoft address dependencies and test how public development works before accepting outside changes.

What the plan means if you are building a Windows app
The repository’s contribution status is separate from Microsoft’s framework guidance for application developers. Microsoft Learn, updated October 2, 2026, describes WinUI 3 as its recommended native UI framework for new Windows desktop applications. WinUI 3 uses XAML with C# or C++, is delivered as part of the Windows App SDK, and targets Windows 10 version 1809 (build 17763) and later, including Windows 11. See Microsoft’s WinUI 3 overview.
Which path makes sense depends on the app you have and what you need to build:
| Your starting point | Microsoft’s guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| New native Windows desktop app | Use WinUI 3 with the Windows App SDK. | A recommended starting point for a new Windows-focused UI. |
| Existing WPF, Windows Forms, or Win32 app | Keep the current UI framework and add Windows App SDK features, or migrate the UI to WinUI 3 where appropriate. | There is no blanket requirement to rewrite a functioning app. |
| Existing UWP app | Plan a migration to the Windows App SDK. | Use Microsoft’s migration guidance to assess the transition. |
| App that must share its UI across operating systems | Consult Microsoft’s cross-platform framework guidance. | A native Windows UI framework may not match a cross-platform requirement. |
Microsoft’s development-path guidance is scenario-specific, not a direction to move every existing Windows app to WinUI. See Choose a Windows development path for the current options.
Quick Recap
How to follow the WinUI rollout
- Check the official discussion. Read the latest dated update in WinUI OSS Update: Phased Rollout Toward Open Collaboration for milestone status and any announcement about community pull requests.
- Check repository contribution guidance. Review the WinUI repository and README before submitting anything; follow its current contribution rules rather than assuming public activity permits outside code.
- Choose an app framework based on your project. Use Microsoft’s Windows development-path guidance to compare a new app, an existing framework, a UWP migration, or cross-platform needs.
