Microsoft says its Majorana 2 processor advances a topological-qubit approach intended to make quantum hardware less vulnerable to errors. The company reports a mean parity lifetime of about 20 seconds in a device—far longer than its stated microsecond-scale operation times—but that measurement is not a demonstration of a fault-tolerant quantum computer. Microsoft’s 2029 date remains a company target, with major hardware and system milestones still ahead.

What Microsoft built in Majorana 2

Majorana 2 uses devices Microsoft calls tetrons: superconducting nanowires with Majorana zero modes at their ends. The device encodes information in the parity of electrons in the wires. Microsoft describes measurement-based operations that use single-shot parity readout.

The processor changes the material stack used in the previous generation. Majorana 1 used aluminum as its superconductor; Majorana 2 replaces it with lead and uses an updated semiconductor active region made from indium arsenide and indium arsenide antimonide.

What the reported performance figures mean

Figure What it describes Important qualification
About 20 seconds The mean parity lifetime Microsoft reports for a Majorana 2 device. The linked June 2026 preprint reports a characteristic parity-switching time of about 20 seconds in an indium arsenide–lead tetron, with some instances lasting more than a minute. Parity lifetime is not the same as the lifetime or error rate of a working logical qubit.
Microsecond scale The approximate timescale Microsoft gives for operations. The preprint says observed parity lifetimes are orders of magnitude longer than typical operation times. That gap is a promising device-level result, not proof that a useful computation can run without errors.
“1,000 times more reliable” Microsoft’s comparison of Majorana 2 qubits with its previous generation. This is the company’s characterization, not an independently benchmarked comparison across quantum-computing platforms.
2029 Microsoft’s anticipated date for a scalable practical quantum computer. This is a roadmap target, not a verified delivery date.
One million qubits A scaling ambition described at the 2025 Majorana 1 launch. It was a design goal for a single chip, not a claim that the announced chip already contained one million working qubits.

The technical result is in a preprint submitted to arXiv in June 2026. Unless a current publication record establishes otherwise, it should be treated as a preprint rather than a peer-reviewed paper.

Why use a topological-qubit approach?

Quantum computers are susceptible to errors, and correcting those errors can require substantial hardware overhead. Microsoft’s strategy is to encode information in topological states that may be less sensitive to some disturbances. If that protection works reliably at scale, it could reduce the resources required for error correction.

That is the architecture’s motivation, not a guarantee that errors disappear. A long-lived parity measurement in one device does not establish that multiple qubits can be connected, controlled, and error-corrected while preserving the same protection. The central engineering question is whether the device-level result can become reliable system-level computation.

What still stands between this result and a quantum supercomputer

Microsoft’s roadmap describes six milestones. The company marks its protected-qubit milestone as achieved, but its own roadmap still lists high-quality hardware-protected qubits, a multi-qubit system, and a resilient quantum system ahead of the proposed quantum supercomputer. The intended endpoint is a system able to perform useful work beyond classical computers; it is not a current product.

Microsoft’s announcement says: “This rapid progress, enabled by AI, has cut our timeline in half for delivering a scalable quantum computer—now anticipated by 2029.” That is the company’s account of its progress and schedule. The lifetime result supports a narrower conclusion: Microsoft reports a substantial improvement in parity stability for its device.

Why independent scrutiny matters

Majorana devices are difficult to establish experimentally because some signals associated with Majorana zero modes can also arise from other physical effects. In its 2022 explanation of its topological gap protocol, Microsoft acknowledged that zero-bias peaks may result from local Andreev bound states and disorder as well as Majorana zero modes, and described using non-local conductance as part of its method.

A 2025 review of the broader Majorana program recounts criticism of earlier methods, noting that some reported measurements could also fit a non-topological system. It also identifies the difficulty of connecting qubits without losing noise resistance. Those critiques predate Majorana 2; they are relevant background, not a direct refutation of the 2026 result.

A September 2026 report says DARPA has on-site access to Microsoft’s latest topological quantum hardware at a Maryland facility for independent testing. The report gives no testing outcome. Access may enable outside assessment, but it is not itself a validation of the processor’s performance.

How to judge the claim

Majorana 2 is a meaningful research milestone if Microsoft’s reported parity-lifetime improvement holds up and can be extended to more complex hardware. It is not evidence that a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer is already operating. To assess future claims, look for results that establish performance across connected qubits, demonstrate error correction at a stated logical scale, and receive independent scrutiny—not just a roadmap date or a single device measurement.
