Microsoft announced Teams Rooms Basic and Pro on August 18, 2022, replacing the Standard and Premium tiers effective September 1, 2022. The announcement-era comparison put Pro at $40 per room per month, below the reported $50 monthly Premium price, while Basic added no license charge for eligible certified hardware. Today, Microsoft lists Basic as free for up to 25 rooms with certified equipment and US Pro at $40 per room per month billed yearly. The room system itself still costs extra.

What Microsoft announced in 2022

Microsoft introduced Teams Rooms Basic and Pro as successors to Teams Rooms Standard and Premium. The change was scheduled to take effect September 1, 2022. At the time, IT Pro reported these monthly prices:

Plan at the time of the announcement Reported price
Teams Rooms Basic No additional license charge for customers with certified Teams Rooms hardware
Teams Rooms Pro $40 per room per month
Legacy Teams Rooms Standard $15 per month
Legacy Teams Rooms Premium $50 per month

The reported price decrease refers specifically to Pro’s $40 announcement-era price compared with the legacy Premium tier’s reported $50 monthly price. It does not establish that every organization’s total costs went down: hardware and other deployment costs remain separate. These are historical figures, not current prices for the retired Standard and Premium plans. IT Pro’s August 18, 2022 report also quoted Microsoft describing Basic as a no-cost entry path and Pro as an option for enhanced hybrid features and monetization.

What Teams Rooms Basic and Pro cost now

Microsoft’s current US pricing lists Teams Rooms Basic as free for up to 25 rooms with certified equipment, and Teams Rooms Pro at $40 per room per month when billed yearly. Microsoft’s UK pricing page lists Pro at £30.80 per room per month, paid yearly. Prices are market-specific, so check the local Microsoft listing for the applicable currency and billing terms rather than converting a US price.

Management, security, and analytics Basic security and management Remote device management, conditional access, and device analytics
Certified hardware Required Required for a Teams Rooms system

Microsoft’s current licensing guidance describes these limits and entitlements in more detail at Microsoft Teams Rooms licenses.

Is Teams Rooms Basic really free?

It is free as a license for eligible use, not a free room setup. An organization still needs a certified Teams Rooms system, and Basic is limited to 25 licenses per organization, with one certified system in each licensed room. It is not a general free Teams license for an arbitrary PC or meeting space. If a room has multiple systems using one resource account, Microsoft says Pro is required.

What to include in a Teams Rooms budget

Compare the subscription with the cost and requirements of the room equipment. Basic may cover the license for a qualifying single-system room, while Pro may suit organizations that need its expanded meeting experience or centralized device controls. Room count, hardware configuration, management needs, and the plan’s entitlements all affect the decision; the license price alone is not the full deployment cost.

  • Confirm the hardware is certified for Microsoft Teams Rooms and suitable for the room.
  • Count rooms and systems, including whether a room has multiple systems tied to one resource account.
  • Match requested meeting, security, management, and analytics features to Basic or Pro entitlements.
  • Verify local pricing and billing terms on Microsoft’s regional plans page.

For organizations still using a legacy license, Microsoft notes that it can remain in use until expiration and recommends transitioning when it expires. Consult Microsoft’s licensing guidance for current details.
