Microsoft is bringing AI agents into Teams conversations, channels, and meetings so they can work with shared conversation context rather than only responding in a separate chatbot. The lineup includes Facilitator for meetings, Channel Agent for channel work, and connections to third-party services and developer agents. What each feature can do—and whether it is generally available or still in preview—depends on the specific agent.
What changed in Microsoft Teams?
In a Microsoft announcement dated September 25, 2026, Microsoft said that invoking @Copilot in Teams gives Copilot the shared context and permissions of the channel, group chat, or meeting where it is invoked. That lets an agent contribute in the same work surface as the team instead of requiring every task to begin in a separate chat with an AI assistant.
“Shared context and permissions” refers to the conversation or meeting in which the agent is called; it should not be read as a promise that an agent can access every Teams conversation or file. The practical value is that the team can ask for help in context, while access remains tied to that work surface’s permissions.

The first two rows address different everyday jobs: Facilitator is meeting-focused, while Channel Agent is aimed at ongoing channel work. The two should not be treated as interchangeable, and the published availability descriptions are not uniform across the feature set.

Can Teams agents connect to Jira, GitHub, or other apps?
Yes, Microsoft says channel agents can connect to third-party apps and agents through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. Its Ignite 2025 examples include GitHub, Asana, and Atlassian Jira. The announcement’s product-launch scenario has a user ask about blockers and mitigation plans, have an agent retrieve risks from Jira, and arrange a meeting.
MCP is the integration route described in that announcement; it does not mean every app is automatically connected in every Teams environment. The example establishes that these integrations are possible, not that a particular organization has configured or enabled them.

Do you need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license?
Microsoft Learn identifies a Microsoft Copilot license as the foundation for many Teams AI capabilities, including Copilot in Teams, Facilitator, and Channel Agent. That is the broad licensing signal in Microsoft’s guidance, not a complete entitlement matrix: the material cited here does not specify every license combination, tenant requirement, or regional exception. Check the current Microsoft licensing and service details for the exact feature and account before planning a rollout.

What should administrators and teams check before enabling agents?
Because agents work with the context and permissions of the Teams surface where they are invoked, decide where they will be used and who can access those conversations before introducing them to sensitive work. For integrations, verify the intended MCP server, connected service, and organizational approval rather than assuming the connection is enabled by default.

Microsoft’s announcements describe the capabilities and examples, but do not provide a single administrative checklist covering every connector, tenant policy, or governance setting. Those details need to be verified against the organization’s own Microsoft 365 configuration.
